X-COM to Return?

Shacknews has a report piecing together the case suggesting that Irrational Games is working on a new installment in the X-COM series of UFO strategy games using the Unreal 3 engine. They found a reference to an X-COM game on a list of Irrational Credits in a (since edited) legal document, and point out that Take 2 Interactive is owner of both Irrational Games and the X-COM license.

Well, both psychological help and support groups exist for nymphomaniacs. The former could be used with anger management courses (or Usenet and IRC groups set up for the sole purpose of flaming the shit out of people), but this conversation's just gotten silly. I wish Irrational the best of luck in this undertaking.

thanks for the tip, mr. perfection.. but have you ever heard of nymphomania? what are the nymphos supposed to do if they cant ever get enough sex?

i think internet forum anger is a great alternative at the moment.. in fact, im going to promote it as the next level of primal scream therapy! online rage is teh future of self-help! serenity now!

I'm kind of astounded at the level of anger of a lot of people on video game forums, too. Maybe exercise / sexual activity with a partner is in order?

I would dearly love for them to bring back X-COM, though to make it truely a great game again, the main original devs should be back working on it.

I loved the originals, the apex of the series for me was X-COM: Apocalypse. The sheer amount of detail they put into this was tremendous, what with the organisations, the interception of alien crafts, the research aspects etc.

I really liked the option of choosing to play real time and turn based. I would love if they would build upon the standards they set for this game.

Here's hoping this comes to fruition and not some like Altars attempts.

Such anger! This is/was a game we are talking about? Hehe!

I can understand the emotion. Betrayal is a bitch.

No but they ignored everybody that was screaming at them telling them it was going to be shit, did they listen, no. I think their ignorance was worse than the product failing itself.

They should have listened.

For some strange reason they seem to think we wanted some Unreal Tournament clone. Boy where they wrong and they're paying for it

Dont worry! We know what you want! Have faith yada yada. well, we waited and waited and give them a change and well, they screwed us over. They never listened once during the development, testing and after the release.

They sat on forums pretending to listen but no they didn't. It was just a PR stunt and it backfired.

1) I dont like the Unreal engine and 2) they already have used the Unreal Engine in T:V and their devs even said it was the wrong choice of engine and here they are using it again. They never learn. The reason they are using the Unreal engine is not technical, it is business reasons.

"Since they have a history of fcuking up games, Tribes 3 for example, I will stay clear of any future products they have a hand in."

Ken Levine once said in an interview that, if he could go back in time and not develop any single game in Irrational's history, it would be Tribes Vengeance. Every single one of their other games received critical acclaim, and at least a few have sold well enough to keep the company in business and highly regarded by those familiar with their titles. One botch doesn't equal a lifetime of worthlessness.

One game, and you say they have a history of fucking up games?

Your statement presumes that Tribes fanboys are rational, which is a bad premise to build an argument upon.

ill be very surprised if this is an actual turn-based game rather than "RTS (now with pause!!)" .. as mainstream game execs seem to be afraid of it these days, assuming it will cost them profitssssssssss

I was most excited when Firaxis bought a ton of Microprose properties and we all thought Sid Meier got X-COM. Now that would have been great.

The few X-COMesque games people have made have all been real-time, which sucked, and all forgotten how important it was to make the soldiers disposable.

One game, and you say they have a history of fucking up games? What about System Shock 2 and SWAT 4? I wasn't into the Tribes series so I can't comment on Tribes 3, but they otherwise have a pretty strong resume. If you want to avoid any future games by them because you were so disappointed in one of their games, you're doing yourself a disservice. Are you going to avoid Bioshock as well? Brilliant.

T:V was on the Unreal engine and they sucessfully managed to royally fcuk up that game. Not something to brag about if they want sales.

Even if I wished to purchase this, will they have an online download and purcase method or am I forced to purchase from the retail channel one use once throw away media? That's so 90's.

If you've followed the series at all you'd have to be cautious when reading a vague headline like this.

There have been soooo many attempts at making a worthy successor to X-COM 1 an they have all failed. Even the vast majority of the official ones have sucked.

I'm not even sure it's possible to recapture the awe that the first two emanated.

I suppose I should update my x-com page with this news...

This series got shit on so much near the end that I'm going to remain very cautious before I freak out about this...
