So Long, and Thanks for All the Files is the clever headline on 3D Gamers announcing the departure of our dear friend Frans from the site, part of a break he is taking from the gaming industry as a whole, a well-deserved rest for one of the hardest working people I know. This will impact this site, even though Frans hasn't officially worked here in years, and even regulars used to seeing his name appearing on numerous stories here every day would still probably have a hard time picturing the invaluable support he's provided over the years, from compiling the daily game reviews list to catching leftovers and typos, tech support, moral support, and much more. Besides all of the game-related stuff, he's also been a true friend, always able to help navigate the shark-infested waters of the gaming scene.

Here's wishing Frans the best of luck as he fishes off the pier, rocks his rocking chair, and whatever other things retired guys do. Hopefully he will get enough of that stuff in by the end of today so he can consider starting his comeback tomorrow, if not sooner. But even if this is a long-term or permanent departure from the scene, it's huzzah and kudos for Frans on this occasion, he will indeed be missed.

Very good mr. Holmes. I decided not to renew that contract out of my own free will, because I really need a sabbatical. Sorry, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. Quite frankly if it had been me, I would have quit after IGN handed me the sack full of money for the website. By the way I hope your successors at 3DGamers keep the site as accessible to file contributions as you did. It's one of the main things I liked about the site versus FilePlanet. I only made a couple of file submissions over the years, but sending an email to you to get it done certainly beat jumping through FilePlanet's hoops and then waiting days for a response. I remember discovering 3dgamers some years ago, and finding more usefull every day. So I bacame a dailly user, after that I discovered bluesnews.com and it was just a great couple of sites(and still are)! I of course am curious about the circumstances. I am curious myself, but this comment from Frans on this forum two years ago gives a clue ( http://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&threadid=54690&id=231098&boardid=1&view=threads ): We also have employment/contractor contracts for two years Apparently Frans' employment contract with IGN was up, and it was not renewed for whatever reason. Never got called for a jury, so my service is done (for at least a year).

They are showing movies in the waiting areas now - RV, Shrek, and While You Were Sleeping were shown today. I was finishing up "Hunters of Dune" and digging into the first half of "Next", so I didn't really watch any of them.

Got a new monitor at work - ViewSonic 19-inch widescreen. I like the real estate, but am going to have to play with the settings a bit....

Heh. that's kinda funny it was Michael Mann whom orginated the MV series and also did Man Hunter, iirc.

That is actually hilarious - considering it sucked.
The review does an ok job - but says, "As police dramas go, Miami Vice never loses its audience, in part because it is unpredictable (you never feel like anyone, even the lead characters, is destined to survive the proceedings) and in part because it never slows down."

umm, if by "lose" you mean no one died of boredom - ok, but it wasn't exaclty a good movie! 3/5? No. 2/5? MAYBE, but that is really pushing it. Unpredictable? If you are a mentally challenged person I guess.

The reviewer also mentions Heat and Collateral - both movies were far superiour to this movie - so I am not sure who's ass his head was buried in.

I would rank this as one of Mann's worst.

If anyone else that has "viewed" this movie - I would be interested in their thougts.

Thanks to Frans and all his hard work.

I of course am curious about the circumstances. As 3dgamers was independent for a long time, and only recently did they go to the IGN network. Did Frans just get fed up with dealing with IGN, is this a forced retirement, or he just has the opportunity to sale off his "shares" of the company and actually retire. Or possibly now can still make money off it by not having to do anything, just being a owner!

I was gonna hook you up with a review site but then I saw he gave this 3 of 4 stars, so I didn't figure you would like it very much, though most of the time he seems pretty good at reviewing.
It's the largest non comerical move site on the net, iirc.
Well in case you want to check your oppinion out compared to other movies reviews he has done and since there really aren't many prfessional review sites.

No - not at all.
1 gun fight sequence at the end.

Long periods of craptastic music with no plot movement or dialogue.
Horrible acting (Come on - jamie foxx as a tough guy? laughable)
Farrell usually will portray his role very well - but it was almost as if whoever was giving these guys direction had never seen the original show!!!! On top of that - Farrell ACTED like he forgot to ACT!
None of the characters are convincing.
Camera angles suck.
Jumpy and confusing (at times) storyline. It's as if they didn't know what direction the movie should take for the first 20 minuntes. One second you are really involved in a direction for the story - then BAM - whole new story, and you never get back to the original.
What little character building they do try and provide - goes no where.
As far as the title in comparison to the show? They didn't even touch on ANYTHING related. They had some boats and fast cars - that was it - a HUGE letdown for a great series of yesteryear.

Do I need to continue?
