Why don't you actually try a clean install of Vista for yourself instead of blindly following benchmarks?
You said yourself that at the moment, Vista can't keep up with XP even if just by alittle bit. Which is what most of the benchmarks are claiming. Why would people go and "blindly" buy a product without some research or sort of pseudo-assurance that it's worth their hard-earned dollar? I won't be paying to downgrade my performance.
Until there's some evidence of marginal gains from having Vista on my system I'll stick with XP, thank you.
