On Blizzard's Next MMORPG

Empire offers an interview with Blizzard's Itzik Ben Bassat on the topic of World of Warcraft (thanks Kotaku). The final answer offers the obvious point that with over 8 million WoW subscribers, they are not looking to create the same game again in a remark that does indicate plans to further explore the MMORPG market in the future:

When we announce our next MMORPG itís not going to be another WoW - weíre not a company that tends to tread the same ground. Itíll be something innovative and new that really brings entertainment to another level.

And again, it's not a bad thing. They've found their niche and their groove.

Valve has made one game since 1998. Id has made one game since 1991. 3D Realms has made no games since 1995.

I don't understand rulez post. Was it aimed at me?

It does prove my point, though. They've done three games since the 1995, if you consider Warcraft and Starcraft to be similar enough to be the same game.

And yes, they've improved. I've little interest in RTS games anymore so I can't speak from personal experience, and I thought WoW was among the most boring ways I've spent two weeks, but Diablo to Diablo II certainly improved, if only by mild refining.

not a company that tends to tread the same ground

Said the company that's made essentially two games since the mid 90s.

Diablo and Diablo 2 were the same ground.
The Crafts were the same ground.
World of Warcraft being the third area they've gone into.

I'm by no means saying this is a bad thing. Diablo 2 was exactly what I hoped it would be.
