Real GAMES - with plot, character development, setting, conflict, storyline, drama, pathos, anticipation, climax, denoument, moral, etc. etc - in other words all the Literary Devices that make for great Novels and great Films, are DAMN hard to craft. Um, since when does gameplay have anything to do with story? Tetris lacked most of the elements mentioned above yet it is widely considered a classic. Super Mario Bros. wasn't exactly known for its plot or character development either.
I guess it depends on the skill of the artists. I remember I though a lot of the shiny effects in Riddick looked pretty awesome. But I'll always hate those sharp edged shadows. Give me DirectX 10 and soft shadows! Chronicles of Riddick did have soft shadows. You just had to use the max detail setting, which ran like crap at the time. Probably runs fine now. DX9 can handle soft shadows and normal mapping just fine. Hitman: Blood Money has both.
