Ships Ahoy - Rainbow Six: Vegas

Ubisoft announces the release of the PC edition of Rainbow Six: Vegas, the latest installment in the tactical shooter series. The first patch for the game was actually released two days ago (story), and here's word on the game's availability:

SAN FRANCISCO — DECEMBER 14, 2006 — Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, announced that Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six® Vegas for the PC has shipped and is now available in retail stores. Developed by Ubisoft's award-winning Montreal studio, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas is the fifth iteration of the multimillion-selling tactical shooter franchise.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas made its next-generation hardware debut last month when it was released to critical acclaim for the Xbox 360(TM) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. In the most dramatic installment of the renowned first-person shooter franchise to date Rainbow operatives take to the chaotic streets of Las Vegas as an escalating terrorist siege in "Sin City” threatens to take world terrorism to new, uncontrollable heights. The future of global security hangs in the balance as you battle to defend classic Vegas locations and environments like Fremont Street, the Strip and casinos. Experience Las Vegas like never before – through revolutionary next generation technology as you work against the clock to protect one of the world's most recognizable cities from utter devastation.

I loved the videos, but will I like the game?

It depends on what you like Ant. If you liked the old R6 realism aspects you may have an issue with it but this one is so strong that even the hardcore R6 fans are coming around.

I would imagine a demo is forthcoming.

Ok...Since Rogue Spear there hasn't been a GREAT one.. Rogue was awesome.. But Playing this a bit on the PC.. It's not too bad.. IF you can get the MultiPlayer going with a good group I think this will be fine..
And as for realistic health... Don't forget the SWAT series (GREAT STUFF) and the upcoming ARMED ASSAULT (FEB in US).. Which is Great stuff also..

The patch even added 360 gamepad contoller functionality.

That's something that should be added, IMO.

Gamepads and R6 being discussed in the same thread?

I hated the fact that GRAW did not have a way to heal each otehr and this works perfectly for me.

OMG Darks DA interwebs!?@!

Healing instantly is ARCADE. Which is fine in most games - just not in the one franchise (R6) that attempted to simulate actual consequences of being shot and encouraged concentration and playing well.

too bad that the pc version is now the dumbed down port of a console game

It's missing a couple of things from the console version but nothing critical. It's still the best R6 game to come out in a long time (a helluva lot better than last years mess "R6: Lockdown"). Definitely worth the purchase.

EDIT: BTW, MS was supposed to release a wireless adapter to allow one to use a 360 wireless controller on their PC. Has anyone heard of anymore news on that? I've got the corded version but the cable can be used to tow a Mack truck with. Very unwieldy

KriszTheKing,

Yeah,I looked into it. I noticed some people were saying that tweaking it may possibly trip up punkbuster in multiplayer though. Nobody has said that it actually did that, however.

zirik,

On the content: Yeah, I agree - they did that in the 'good old days'.
On following GRAW: No - these games (Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon franchises) originally played diffrently, and had a different feel. Ghost Recon was set in wider areas while Rainbow Six\Raven Shield were set in more close quarters/indoor areas. This in turn changed the way you worked with your squad. Vegas probably differs from GRAW because of their past, but you can see some lines between the two products blurring.

I bet there will be a realism mod if/when they release the mod and mapping tools. Too bad they didn't put the option in the GUI to begin with.

That's something that should be added, IMO. MS designed a great pad this time around. It certainly knocks the hell out of the vast majority of PC peripherals as it were.

Have a look at the Tweak sticky thread on the PC RSV forum about switching to shader model 2.0. You have to edit a config file or something. Now if they would just fix the multiplayer bug so we can actually play the game online that would be awesome because currently Multiplayer does not work it crashes to desktop.

The Health system in ths game is good. it works the same as Call of Duty. If you take too much dmg you will die. I hated the fact that GRAW did not have a way to heal each otehr and this works perfectly for me.

More proof that they've dumbed down the R6 line to appeal to the masses.

Whether anyone thinks it's a port or whether it is better than the console or not, from what I'm reading in the official PC RSV forums it seems to be getting more positive reviews from the older Rainbow Six fans. That is an excellent sign given that it's only been out a day or two.

One thing that I've noticed though, is that you may need a vid card with shader 3.0 support. Not sure if it is hard coded in, or whether there will be tweaks for changing this in the future.

It is 100% port. Infact the PC version has less options than the console. The patch even added 360 gamepad contoller functionality.

Agreed! I really don't get it UBI bought the franchise from redstorm. All they had to do is keep the same formula & fine tune the graphics, AI and collision issues. To this day UBI has not been able to poduce a R6 game that was as good as the ones released by redstorm!

PS. I referring to the PC.

that's exactly what I don't like though...I mean when I make a mistake I don't want to shake it off like superman...I liked the concept of walking around with a gimped leg and continuing on...now I can just sit there taking a few shots not having to worry at all about an instant death or have any fear of danger...

however i was able to enjoy lockdown a little, it was either that or just look at the CD after i wasted my money on it. So I forced myself to like it and it didnt turn out as bad as I thought.
It's sad how many games I've had to do that with. Dungeon Siege, Klingon Honor Guard, Icewind Dale 2, Neverwinter Nights (the official campaign)... excuse me - I think I'm going to go cry now.

I'm disgusted with vegas because of the health system...it's no longer rainbow six to me anymore...but generic squad shooter #364...they raped what was my favorite franchise
