New Alien Games

Sega will hatch 'Alien' games on the Hollywood Reporter (thanks Dark Horizons and Ant) reveals plans for new PC and Console games based on the series of Alien movies, making specific mention of an RPG and an FPS, with the first game to be released in 2008. It is specified that this deal is separate from the new Aliens versus Predator movies, but the fan of the third and fourth Alien flicks will be disappointed to know that these games will not follow the specific plot of any of the movies, though conversations are underway to secure the participation of principal actors like Sigourney Weaver and Lance Henriksen. Sega says "We're taking licensing to the next level with this franchise," and the article also makes mention of other Fox properties with the potential for similar treatment in the future: Big Trouble in Little China, The Fly, and Fantastic Voyage. SEGA and Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising to Bring Alien Franchise to Next-Gen Systems is the subsequent official announcement of this news that offers a slight variant on these details, saying 2009 is actually when to expect the first game, and making liberal use of the term "next-generation," which is of course codeword for consoles, with no mention of the PC or any specific platform. Here's a bit from the Hollywood Reporter:

Mike Gallo, senior producer of the "Alien" games at Sega, said the new games will not follow the strict story lines of any of the four films in the series but instead will provide a new experience by drawing from the history and lore that is the foundation of the films.

"We'll go out of our way to tie the games into the films in unique ways," he said. "We're also looking at all 'Alien' source material for inspiration, in addition to the films. We may incorporate some characters that fans know and love, and we may let gamers find answers to questions that were left unanswered in the movies."

It's not everyday that a company buys a million-dollar license, and then puts out a press release that is negative towards half of the material they just paid for.

That's Blue's take on the matter, it's not part of the press release.

Hmmmm... how bout an ALIEN MMO!?!?
They can call it... LV426?!

You french bastards ruined these movies, btw. Alien 3 was just a horrible atrocity, and Alien Res. was barely any better. I guess that's what happens when you try to follow up Ridley Scott then James Cameron.

And while mostly not CGI, the special effects xenoform in Alien 3 was flatout butt ugly.

I don't know about bringing Ripley back for a game, especially if it doesn't have anything to do with the movies. But having Lance Henrickson do some voice overs would be dreamy. Serious man crush on the guy. What an actor.

Yeah, Fantastic Voyage game is actually a great idea. I would also love to see the further adventures of Jack Burton, but preferably in movie form. What ever happened to that Escape From New York game? I've always thought that that movie could make a great game.

I agree, loved AVP. The flares were SO cool, and COOP mode, although repetitve, was extremely intense. I had a blast playing with my bro's. One on flame thrower (kinda worthless, but still funny) one on the big machine gun auto aim, me on flares, grenades etc. The sounds of the radar when they closed in.

I mean they just had it all, and then they go ahead and butcher it to hell with AVP2 and wonder why it failed?

Fucking morons.

It's like AC/DC making the album Back in Black, selling million, and then going...

"Hmmm, it sold millions, lets change everything! Get Angus on Keyboards, and lets get 7 string guitars, and orchestra!"

Thankfully for us, ACDC doesn't listen to that bullshit from their PR/Marketing dept. I guess I should really use Van Halen as an example.

Why change?

32. Would like to see something like NS. Dec 11, 2006, 15:20 Ant

I would like to see a multiplayer game like Natural Selection mod. Aliens vs. Humans/Marines. Fighting to eliminate eachb other and for resources. I remember that there was a PC DOS version of this, but it bombed. Maybe, we need a MMOG version. [grin]

I think Fantastic Voyage would make a pretty awesome computer game. I'm surprised nobody has done it before now.

Yeah man, a Fantastic Voyage game could be pretty damn cool and possibly educational at the same time. You could go on timed missions to do specific operations... yeah, I could see that being a fun game.

Alien 4 was a travesty. It had an unnecessary agenda, awful CGI, and started pulling new alien "characteristics" out of its ass.

Also, I thought AVP blew AVP2 out of the water. As mentioned, being a human in that game really made you feel helpess, like any tiny mistake was death. The alien side was a ton of fun as well, stalking and leaping from the walls to rip a head off. The predator side was dull and lifeless, but two out of three isn't bad at all.

There's no such thing as an Alien 3 director's cut. Fincher had such a terrible experience making the film he doesn't want anything to do with it anymore. The extended cut on the Quadrilogy box isn't done by him. We'll probably never see the definitive cut of that film.

No, but they reassembled it based on his notes (written at the time of shooting), I believe.

And they tried to get him involved, but he passed.

And yeah, that cut is miles better than the original version shown in theatres. It was based on what he was trying to do, before the studio stepped in and started making changes.

27. Aliens 1 and 2 only Dec 11, 2006, 14:31 venomhed

Once they got the French director and tried to make the Aliens an understandable race, rather than the bugs that they are, the franchise died.

These are bugs, giant ants, with the capability to waste humans. Treat them as such, keep the game simple, maybe explain what the large spacecraft was that was carrying these eggs was for.

Remember in the first Aliens, the space wreck? Also the space wreck "pilot" had a similar architecture to the aliens. In the book, this was supposed to be some sort of planetary bomber craft, but of course never explained.

Perhaps a very large race that simply used Aliens to take over planets, then maybe the do something else to wipe out the aliens.

if they continue to make this "corny" series with religious aspects, and Sigourney Weaver still going, they will fuck up again royally.

Ditch Sigourney Weaver (she was great in 1 and 2, die already)
Ditch the relgious tones
Ditch the "trying to understand and train the aliens"

Go back to simple extermination
Go back to horrible deaths of every man woman and child that comes across these things

Keep it Simple!

Alien 4 wasnt super cool, but I liked it much better than Alien 3. 3 was sooo... limited.

See the Director's Cut of Alien 3, its really really good!

Oh btw, reading that there is gonna be games based on the actual films is the best news all year.

Some of us diehards will tell you Alien 3 and 4 never happened...

Heh, that what never happened? I think some authors of the books and comics would rather them not be considered canonical either.

And yes, I hope we get AvP3 too, this time with better netcode, though.
Man I loved the 3 singleplayer games in AvP2. AvP1 was awesome aswell. I remember the sounds being much more authentic in AvP1 than in AvP2. That really pissed me of for quite some time since I loved the sound of the marine guns so much in AvP1.

I like Alien 4. The script was awful, but Jeunet's direction made up for it.

I still seem to be the only person in the universe who really likes Alien:Resurrection.

I liked it too, I just wish they had expanded on the story more. There was an alternate ending (more like an extension) where the survivors actually landed on Earth, apparently in France showing a decrepit Eiffel Tower barely standing.
