Though it was announced in August that Battlefield 2142 would feature in-game
advertising ( story), when the game appeared on shelves yesterday
there were reactions to the references to this in the EULA, some calling the
included technology "spyware." This was seemingly first stirred up by a
Shacknews comment, with
a subsequent comment
succeeding somewhat (typos from re-typing it are corrected here) in reproducing
the troubling aspects of the agreement, which advises against installing the
game onto any computer attaching to the internet if you find the following
problematic: When you use the Software while connected to the Internet,
the Advertising Technology may record your IP address and other anonymous
information ("Advertising Data"). The Advertising Data is temporarily used by
IGA to enable the presentation and measurement of in-game advertisements and
other in-game objects which are uploaded temporarily to your personal computer
or game console and changed during online game play. The Advertising Technology
does not collect any personally identifiable information about you, and EA will
not provide IGA with any of your personally identifiable information. The
servers used by the Advertising Technology may, from time to time, be located
outside your country of residence.
There was speculation that this would
result in ads being served based on user's cookies, and other sneaky stuff, but
EA's
response to Joystiq clarifies what sort of information is being collected:
The advertising program in Battlefield 2142 does not access any files
which are not directly related to the game. It does not capture personal data
such as cookies, account login detail, or surfing history.
BF 2142 delivers ads by region. The advertising system uses a player's IP
address to determine the region of the player, assisting to serve the
appropriate ads by region and language. For instance, a player in Paris might be
presented with ads in French. The information collected will not be repurposed
for other uses.
Battlefield 2142 also tracks "impression data" related to in-game
advertisements: location of a billboard in the game, brand advertised, duration
of advertisement impression, etc. This information is used to help advertisers
qualify the reach of a given advertisement.

You guys are all probably too young to remember, but believe it or not there was actually a time when you didn't see ads before the movie in theaters. The most you got was "Let's all go to the movies, and buy ourselves some treats!" with the dancing soft drink cups and popcorn boxes.
Ads before movies have mostly died now, though. Theaters have realized that they shot themselves in the foot.
Yes, there used to be no ads, just previews. Then ads came. Then people got pissed off going to an 8:00 movie and sitting through 15 minutes of coke ads before the previews start. They stopped going to movies.
Theaters got crushed, so they stopped. Now you get previews, maybe a 15 second ad, and the movie. The ads that normally would get played are now played before the movie begins, so from 7:45 until 8:00 they'll play ads for people that get there early. Which is fine, it beats a blank screen.
It's a case of the market correcting itself. Which Riley feels is an impossibility. But the consumer will react if they don't like something, slowly but surely.
Personally, I can enjoy ads if they make sense and aren't the point of the product. A movie like I, Robot pissed me off with all the blatant ads, but other movies don't. A game like Def Jam: Fight For NYC did in-game ads perfectly (and it was done by EA!) There was a subway level with three billboards. One was always on the screen, the other two were on the screen 33% of the time each. The one in the middle was blank, the other two had ads. So you didn't always see them. Another area of the game had a Stuff Magazine ad, but you only saw it for a few seconds before a menu covered it up. The ads were there, you saw them, but they didn't detract, and they made sense in the context of the game.
Other games have you snowboarding through certain cars with the cars name everywhere. That's no fun. Other games have corporate sponsors for fights, which is fine, but show the name too often. That's no fun. The same game gives you an absurd mascot as a corner manager. That actually kind of rocked.
