As for SS and Ultima Underworld, the only logical reason people would want to play them is out of curiosity. Both games are considered classics, so people want to know what made them so influential. Other players might go back and play them out of nostalgia, but neither play sessions could be considered "regular" by any means. I have no idea what you are talking about. I have a crappy computer but even so needed to catch up on a bunch of games. I just finished System Shock 1/2 not even a year ago. I just finished Freespace 2 like a week ago. I'm almost done Dues Ex and Gothic 2. I played Half Life 1 for the first time 2 summers ago. For online I still play BF42 and Wolf:ET. I even played a fair ways through Underworld but didn't bother finishing it.
Sure the graphics aren't anywhere near todays standards, but they're all excellent games. I'm about to finally buy a new mid-high end computer but I'm not sure if there is anything out there that currently compares to the gameplay those games have. Basically, I'm on chapter 5 of G2, as soon as I'm done that I'm getting a new rig and getting Gothic 3 and eventually QW: Enemy Territory.
I was going to upgrade for Doom3 but played halfways through on a friends computer and decided it wasn't worth a new computer, same with Half Life 2, same with BF2 (80 hours). In the meantime I've caught up on all the oldies but goodies, and suprisingly, I can install them on any computer I have without an internet connection. (Unless I want to patch HL1 up to current, then I need to instal steam and a couple GB's of extralaneous stuff, but the older patches still work unless I want to play Counter Strike or something as, nevermind).
Anyways, I don't think playing quality games, even if a few tech generations out dated can be relegated to 'curiousity', 'nostalgic' or 'irregular play sessions'. I had a lot of fun playing most of them over the last two years.
Back to the topic (whatever that was). I'm all for online distribution but don't believe in the authentication bit for single player games. Companies come and go and get bought out every single day. Seriously, I bet some of you don't even know who owns the company you're currently working for right now. If I can burn it to DVD or CD and it's mine, great. Fortunately we have a choice right now. I'll walk two blocks from work and buy a game, possibly cheaper. If online downloads is convenient to you, more choice is better than less.
If it's multiplayer like Q3 or whatever, then fine, not that we didn't have tons of CDkey issues in the past. I think the whole DRM thing is getting out of hand with lawyers, **IA's, government, publishers, etc. I think if you make it convenient enough to pay for and download and own and the price is reasonable then you'll get a lot more customers. But it seems that the regular Joe is getting screwed by his TV that won't work with his new HD-Disc, or the alleged Starforce crap, authentication servers, or whatever.
I think that if they price it right and make it easier to pay a few bucks and download the content and have it 'just work' instead of going through the hassle of hacking whatever it is you want to pirate they'll end up making more money.
An example for me would be (I know this isn't games, but same idea): I don't watch much TV, but loved Battlestar Galactica. Unfortunately there's no way I can promise myself, "Yes, I'll be in front of a TV at nine o'clock every Wednesday on the Sci-fi channel for the rest of the year". Won't happen. And it's the kind of show you want to watch in chronological order from beginning to end.
So I downloaded a few episodes, but then you need all the codecs and crap, which most of us can figure out, but it had a little 'tv channel icon' in the lower right of the screen which drives me nuts and I'm not sure if commercials are taken out properly and don't get all the extras, which I like.
Anyways, that crap just fills up my hard drive and I can't be bothered to burn it so I bought the whole season at Futureshop for like $70-80CDN. I felt kind of ripped off but it only comes to around 5 bucks an episode and I own it, plus I get the extras.
Why they can't do that with digital distribution (send me Ep1 season 2 for $3.50), I don't know. I mean, I could go rent any movie and rip it in an hour, what's the difference? Kids go rent console games and rip them in 2 seconds, just because it's online it's a big problem now? I just don't get it. Make it easy for me to click this button, give you the cash, give me the content. Make it a better value than taking the time to pirate it or go to the store.
Personally, I'm still in the arena of just buying the damn disc. It would be nice to watch or play or buy something when it's convenient for me, but the powers that be would rather make that nigh impossible or actually more difficult than pirating. If they want me to buy it from a store, for less cash that's fine. I don't understand how buying it or renting it from a store prevents me from copying it. If I were them, I'd drop the prices, make it 'one click easy' and take the money. Write off the pirates as a loss that is part of your business model.
As an aside, when I get my new system I'll want to play Halflife 2(single player, don't care about CS, but TF2 could be good). As I understand after reading this forum for several years, I *require* an internet connection and *must* install steam in order to play the single player game? That kind of shit pisses me off, if true. What if I'm moving (which I may be) two weeks before I get this new system and my ISP drags their ass? I can't go to the store and buy HL2 and play it while awaiting the dumb ass techs to activate my cable line? Doesn't matter, I'll be playing Gothic 3 anyways...
Or, I could just download the hacked version now and burn it in anticipation of the fact that I'll most probably be without an internet connection in the middle of next month. Then just buy the game later.... Just a matter of convenience... Actually, screw HL2, I'll just reinstall Far Cry and replay that at hi-rez instead of the lowest possible settings you can imagine. It was fun, if ugly for me.
