The market corrects itself. The market does correct itslf but not before those who bet on the wrong horse lose their purchases if not their shirts. For example such correction is little comfort to Triton's customers who have been without the games for which they paid since September 28 or so.
Consumers won't go for most of the crap you guys are suggesting while alternatives exist The problem is that alternatives don't exist at least not legal ones. If you want to play Valve's games it's either use Steam, do without, or use a hacked unauthorized copy if one exists and you can get ahold of it.
alternatives will always exist Exclusitivity contracts exist for the very purpose of preventing that. How many legal alternatives for digitally distributed music are there for ipod owners? You must have your head in the sand if you think monopolies don't and won't exist in the digital delivery space.
Sitting here fearing digital distribution because it will turn into game rentals The problem is that it already has turned into that. Customers who "purchased" a game from Trymedia/Trygames.com or Direct2Drive already have had to suffer with the problem of their purchases being unusable on their replaced or upgraded PC's due to the limited installations on new hardware granted. Every time Steam fails to allow a customer to run his games, he suffers the fact that his ability to use his purchase is subject to Valve's whims not his own. There is no need to wait for it to happen. It already has.
Just because something could happen doesn't mean it ever will. The problem is that it is happening now and as time goes on it will happen to more and more consumers until it reaches a critical mass. However, It is better to complain now and nip the problem in the bud than let it fester and punish more people along the way until corrective action is finally taken.
