More In-Game Ads

EA Signs Agreement to Offer Dynamic In-Game Advertising on Xbox 360 and PC and EA Signs Agreement to Bring In-Game Dynamic Advertising to Select Titles describes more plans to insert advertisements into video games, as EA has signed deals with IGA and Massive for in-game ads. Interestingly, one of the titles to get this treatment will be Battlefield 2142, which is not only set on the battlefield but well over 100 years in the future, bringing into question how these ads will live up to the "realistic" part of this description:

The initial EA title to incorporate dynamic in-game advertising via IGA is Battlefield 2142(TM), developed by DICE in Stockholm, Sweden. Fans of the franchise will see new, realistic brand presence integrated into contextually relevant game environments across the platforms and across the geographies where they play. At least two additional EA titles will offer dynamic ad serving capabilities through the course of the agreement with IGA.

Good lord, Riley, why don't you come up with something new for a change?
You've got to give him credit... instead of bashing Valve he's now bashing me. I'd rather he attack me for a reason than bash Valve for none - so I'm happy. Childish insults are more pleasant than paranoid, baseless lies.

Well, you can't go long without bringing me up... it appears that I'm really getting to you
Your stupidity is so predictable. There you are dog, right on cue. I mentioned you, fool, because the post to which he referred was a reply to you and because you were the other idiot who misunderstood the original post.

So, yes, while you may be full of yourself, that simply makes you full of shit.

You obviously don't know how to read any better than that idiot theyarecomingforyou.
Well, you can't go long without bringing me up... it appears that I'm really getting to you. The mighty Smiley brought down by myself, a master of cunning. Try not to take too long coming up with a biting come back - we don't want your dinner to go cold, else your mother will have to heat it up again.

which you put too much stock in its relevance.
You obviously don't know how to read any better than that idiot theyarecomingforyou. The point of that statement was that the content of the original post was not merely a joke. It was satire. As for whether it matters, since I wasn't the only one who understood it and enjoyed it, it matters.

There really isn't a fine line between in-your-face out-of-context advertising and subversive unobstructive advertising;

yeah, there is.

Unless EA gets a hold of it. Now we're gonna have in-advertisment games to play.

good lord. what is so different about EA doing this than any other company in some other industry?

the US is capitalistic, so of course they will want to make money.

which you put too much stock in its relevance. sliding around all silly like bashing valve and ea like it matters any.

What kind of ads could possibly fit into the future setting of bf2142?
A future without McDonald's or Coca Cola? Please. Even if the world was taken over by robots they just make bolt burgers and oil drinks, though I'm not sure tampon companies would have the same longevity.

As for Smiley Fitz, don't worry about him. He jumps into every topic to criticise Valve and prophecise the end of the world - when anybody uses logic to counter him he goes into a mad rage and lashes out at whom-so-ever defends them. I have to swat him with a newspaper sometimes but he's so used to physical abuse from his parents that it does little good. When I next go on holiday to assland I think I'll rub some mercury in his face.

Hopefully these adverts will be destructible. Because then, I can predict a Xmas 1915/CS Knife Fight-style game of camaraderie as members of opposing teams drop weapons and use entire rounds as a means to hunt out advertising and destroy it...

The only problem I can see is if the adverts respawned mid round. You're flying your Hoverdyne-ma-bob along towards the enemy Titan, and low-and-behold, a massive billboard spawns in front of you... You can see where that is going.

I see this going two ways here. Getting to shoot at pics of whatever single Paris Hilton has just released, or seeing futuristic adds for a sci-fi porn flick starring a re-animated cyborg Paris Hilton with death-ray eyes. Either way Paris is being virtually violated, so im happy.

As far as I'm concerned, as has been stated here, ad-supported software is generally free, as well as many websites, including this one.

If they want to make it a free download like ET, then I'd consider it, but since I mostly avoided the whole BF2 fiasco I can't see paying for something that they haven't fixed yet.

If Need for Speed is any indication, this will be a horrible thing. I still have nightly nightmares of a giant Cingular icon branding my monitor in a fashion most heinous.

It wasn't bad in Splinter Cell, on the other hand, as seeing some screensaver depicting Underworld is hardly the kind of advertisement that stands out. There really isn't a fine line between in-your-face out-of-context advertising and subversive unobstructive advertising; EA just chooses to pass boldly over the line in their search for the next dollar.

In-game advertising isn't necessarily a bad thing... Unless EA gets a hold of it. Now we're gonna have in-advertisment games to play.

Do you mean "obtuse".......
Yes, it was a typo.

As for theyarecomingforyou, don't mind him. He follows me around on this forum like a rabid Pavlovian dog and barks and foams at the mouth every time I post. So, I have to swat him with the newspaper like I did there so he will scurry along until the next time.

My nitpicking aside, I thought your comments were hilarious! Keep up the witty commentary.

I just counted up the number of billboards they put into the game, 21! plus there's 4 large shipping like containers ready for a replacement texture.

I don't care which way you look at it, for or against, that's a lot of SPAM!

All we get from Smiley is a joke? Good job it wasn't Valve doing it or we'd never hear the end of it.
