DarkStar One Demo Friday

GameSpot has a timer counting down to the release of an English playable demo for DarkStar One, showing that a sample of Ascaron's space exploration and combat game is on the way. The counter currently reads just over 1 day and 15 hours, putting the planned release at about Noon Eastern time on Friday. Word is: "This DarkStar One demo (950 MB) contains a huge variety of worlds, equipment upgrades, and alien races, offering the player an estimated two-plus hours of gameplay. The demo also contains an extensive tutorial that follows the storyline direct from the full retail game. As with the full game, the demo offers players the opportunity to play in free-form mode, create their own adventure on the fly, or follow the storyline to learn more about the death of the lead character's father, and the mysterious ship, the DarkStar One."

I don't know which version you have, but in final version, you can't upgrade (except few cases) outside main story.

Artifacts are found in asteroids, but only at some point during story.

Keys could be obtained either during story sequences, or through side missions (maybe there is another way of obtaing key but I haven't tried it)..later applies to sectors which aren't related to main story.

Story is great, I love those stylish CG cutscenes..as well as whole game.

What, this is not a tie in for Carpenter's first movie!?!

Hah. The first thing that flashed across my mind when I read the headline was an alien beachball.

I still haven't been drawn into a space game as well as the tie-fighter / x-wing series.

Those were great. I managed to get Tie-Fight CD edition running on XP, boy was that nastalgic. X-Wing Alliance was pretty good too. Odd, when I think of LucasArts I think "X-Wing" yet I didn't enjoy that game anywhere near as much as Tie and Alliance.

So blame Interplay for no Freespace 3.

Oh, I assure you, I do! But I can't think of a single quality title Volition has put out since THQ got hold of them, either...

But I wasn't aware FS2 sold that well...

Hence, no FS3...

A third was in preproduction but Interplay and Volition parted ways. About the same time Interplay went to shit (new management from France *cough*Herve Cain*cough*) and killed several other great franchises such as Descent, Baldur's Gate, and Fallout. So blame Interplay for no Freespace 3.

But other than that, a nice story driven space adventure.

I'd take a chance, based on your mini-review...

Finished the German version of the game.

Cool space shooter, nice story, but gets repetitive after a while. You always have to get a better jump drive in order to get to the next story system and in order to buy it you have to do pirate/trade/escort missions, which are almost always the same.

You only have 1 ship (Darkstar One), but it can be upgraded by picking up "artifacts". It not only changes the stats of the ship (front, middle, back), but also the appearance, so it has some RPG elements.

But other than that, a nice story driven space adventure.

If the game is really good it'll sell. Gamers haven't changed, it's the retarded publishers and sackless developers who refuse to make anything decent. What space sim sold well after Freespace 2? Not a single one because they all sucked.

I don't get why it's so hard to make a space sim with Freespace combat as well as being open ended.

That's not hard at all. The hard part is to get people to buy it, so they'll be more of them...

I don't get why it's so hard to make a space sim with Freespace combat as well as being open ended. Freelancer came so close but they fucking screwed it up. Without the ability to configure roll left/right it was pointless. That one thing killed it for me. Oh, and the shit story, unrealistically cramped solar systems, lack of hireable wingmen, and a piss poor trade setup. As soon as somebody gets it right I'll play that game and nothing else for the next 10 years.

32. Joystick? Jun 29, 2006, 07:47 Cage

If it has decent joystick support then I'll try the demo.

I saw that Gamespot preview as well. That Gamespot editor, Jason Ocampo is quite the tool. I'd have to put their feature editor, Rich Gallup, in that same category for not catching that obvious error.

Rich: "How is this a 2006 game?"

Jason:...."You also get the benefit of the fact that is was built for modern day systems, so joysticks died a long time ago, uh"

Rich: "Where's the joystick?"

Jason: "There is no joystick!"....

Priceless.

There is NO JOYSTICK!!!11!

It's a modern game, after all.

I think that rates at least a top 10 spot on the all time clueless list.

Of course as was pointed out previously, the features list on the games web site lists joystick and gamepad compatibility.

Got the german version of this one and its boring, very boring. You only have one ship, (its appearance changes a bit because of the upgrades) story is very predictable, enemies are some kind of stupid. The gfx is ok except for some strange stuttering (afaik not fixed until now).

At first, I thought this was the one featuring the cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000. It's nearly the same name, after all.

But I was wrong.

Does that mean you are never able to buy a different ship?

IMO being able to change ships is a huge plus in such a game. I remember how I worked for my centurion in privateer and how happy I was when I finally got it.

You can upgrade darkstar without the story at least in the version I have you can.

artifacts are found in certian astroids and not a part of the story at all.

And keys to other parts of the sectors can be obtained in more than one way.

Oh btw the story although contrived is quite well told and im glad it has one.

you can become anything you want to become and ignore the story all together if that's what you want to do

No you can't ignore the story because it's the only way to:

- upgrade DarkStar One (through artifacts)
- gain access to majority star systems

There are several others reasons to not ignore the story, but two mentioned above are compelling enough. But, I don't have any single problem with it, because DSO is really what I want (playing english review version righ now) from game which by the developers themselves is "Freelancer done Right" (btw love Freelancer).

After playing hours and hours of coop Freelancer with the mouse I'd gotten pretty damn good at picking guys off. I went back to the joystick when I played thru Freespace 2 again, and wew did that take some retraining on my part. Not exactly like riding a bike.

you know, i'm going to give this thing a try, it seems like it could be fun. but watching that preview reminded of one very annoying thing about games like this... what a pain in the ass it is to try and hit anything! i'm sitting here watching the dude play the game and he's not hitting a damn thing! for a second i thought he was a developer too... i was like "great, even a creator of the game can't hit shit"... it just gets frustrating sweeping my mouse all over the desk trying to pick off a damn space pirate! well, i'll give it a shot... i haven't really played a space shooter since x-wing alliance. might be refreshing!

and seriously... they're making it sound like there's no joystick support. someone should tell them to pull that movie off the site before it turns away potential customers.
