This press
release officially announces that Prey is gold, following a hint to that
effect last week ( story). Here's word on the pending availability
of Human Head's sci-fi shooter: New York, NY – June 28, 2006 – 2K, a
publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), and 3D
Realms today announced the first-person shooter Prey has gone to gold master and
will be available in North America on July 11th and in Europe on July 14th.
Developed by Human Head Studios under the direct supervision of 3D Realms, Prey
will be available for Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from
Microsoft and PC in both a regular edition and a Limited Collector's Edition.
The demo for the PC version of Prey is currently available for download, with an
Xbox 360 demo available soon.
"Prey raises the bar for first-person shooters and is a must-have game for the
summer," said Christoph Hartmann, President, 2K. "Its unique features, crisp
graphics and in-depth storyline make it a truly revolutionary game."
Prey is a groundbreaking first-person shooter that turns the genre upside-down
with new gameplay features and next generation graphics. Breaking the
traditional first-person shooter format, Prey introduces innovative gameplay
elements including wall-walking, portals, spirit-walking and gravity flipping,
which allows for insane eight player deathmatches.
"We are proud to continue our tradition of releasing innovative and dynamic
games for the PC and console game markets," said Timothy Gerritsen, CEO, Human
Head Studios, Incorporated. "Prey is the culmination of nearly five years work
to bring a truly innovative product to a first- person shooter market clamoring
for something new."
"Prey's greatest message is that a commitment to quality, polish and unique
gameplay is a sure-fire way to build a brand and one we strongly believe will
have staying power for years to come," said Scott Miller, CEO, 3D Realms. "We
believe Prey will be a major hit for gamers worldwide."
Prey for Xbox 360 and PC has been rated "M" for mature by the ESRB. For more

Hopefully with multi-core processors and physics acceleration (via addin cards or GPU offloading) we will start to see significant improvements in AI, as that is certainly needed. Meh. I used to feel this way.
But, for the most part, AI dies within 5 seconds. How do you make AI significantly improved if you only see them for five seconds? In stealthier games yeah, fix the whole "the guy next to me just had his head blown off, no big deal" syndrome, but other than that...
FEAR stood out to me the first time through. I didn't use the bullet-time, so I had a good chance to watch guys do things while I hid, as they could kill me quickly. The second time I used bullet-time and never saw much, as guys died before they could take more than a few steps. Even when they did move, certain kids here (you could guess who) whined that it was all "scripted" anyway, giving a good example of people not knowing what "scripted" means.
HL2 did feel flat, though. Most often, for me, it was for a few reasons: 1) You find tons of zombies. Zombies, by default, are dumb. 2) The police guys, the second most common, died really quickly. They're often be dead before they finished repelling from a rope. 3) The white combine, the ones that last the longest, seemed to often be on different levels than you. So while they did cool things, probably, you didn't see it.
I dunno. The time you were in a room and they blew the doors off and holes in the wall was cool. Other than that... flat and lifeless. But how much more could they do given how quickly they die. They mostly ran to a spot to get a shot, then stood to line you up in their sites. But since they couldn't do much real damage, they'd die without hurting you much.
I think FEARs approach to this was novel - let the enemy hurt you almost as much as you hurt them. That way you can't just stand there and return fire until he's dead. And since the enemies were so deadly, let us hold medkits and use as we need.
