And I've been typing "g search" (Google), "imdb search" (IMDB), "fr search" (Froogle), and "wiki search" (Wikipedia) in my address bar for years now. And I never noticed it didn't work!
Thanks for that Z... learn something every day.

The only thing that stands out at the moment is the preview thumbnail for a page when you hover over the tab....very nice.

That's cool!

9. Opera 9 Jun 20, 2006, 22:11 Bucky

This will probably get lost, but here's my quick take on Opera 9: everything 8 was, with widgets and native bitorrent. The only thing that stands out at the moment is the preview thumbnail for a page when you hover over the tab....very nice.

Upgrading over 8 also caused no problems and finally kept my preferences and window setup.

Personally I just hated having to search around for plug-ins, or get updated ones, or worry about ones that were incompatible with each other.

Oh yeah, even as a FF supporter, I can admit that. That's the one thing they need to work out, and I think they're trying to do that...and as good of a browser as it is, it won't really catch on until it "just works" for 99% of the people. You average end user is NOT going to troubleshoot their browser - they're going to close it and use a different one that works where they need it to.

We'll get there!

In Firefox you have a similar search menu/bar feature but you have to select the engine you want from a pull down menu and then type the search into the space next to it

You do?

Oh crap. And I've been typing "g search" (Google), "imdb search" (IMDB), "fr search" (Froogle), and "wiki search" (Wikipedia) in my address bar for years now. And I never noticed it didn't work!

Yes, Firefox has this exact same feature. It's called QuickSearches. There are even several setup by default in standard install. I never use the Search bar -- it's not even on my toolbar.

Note, I'm not saying anything bad about Opera here -- it's a good browser. It's generally considered faster and lighterweight (memory wise) than Firefox. It doesn't have the broad range of plugins though.

One of the best features - IMO - of Opera is the ability to perform search engine queries from the address bar. For example, if you want to search Google for "impse.cx" you could type sans quotes "g impse.cx" into the address bar. In Firefox you have a similar search menu/bar feature but you have to select the engine you want from a pull down menu and then type the search into the space next to it. It's inferior to the system in place with Opera; otherwise, I prefer Firefox in most every other way but just wish it had that feature of Opera available.

Not that I'm about to switch from FF anytime soon, but is Opera any good? My friend described it as a couple of notches above IE, but about as obscure as netscape.

It's not bad at all, I used it for a few years. But once you start using plug-ins for FF, Opera starts to pale...
