Yep, Robin Williams is also a big fan of Day of Defeat (pre-Source) and Battlefield 2. The guy is the real deal. He apparently came into my shopping mall and talked to the EB Games people there, cuz they were still talking about him when I walked in a bit later.

True...I read he's pretty deep into BF2...he's a camper I recon it'd be a bitch playing with him on voice comms, what with you laughing your arse off and all

But yeah, the EA thing has me bothered...I've pretty much kept my boycott up, but Spore, man...Will Wright, man!

You can get killed, conquered and otherwise defeated by your competition (otehr creatures, tribes, cities and worlds)

Survival of the fittest and all that.

I think the best way to sum it up is that I haven't seen any "game" yet.

So far I see an executive toy. It just looks like a sandbox mode, which is how I honestly play all my Sim-type games, but where is the challenge? SimCity made it hard to make a profit and keep people happy. Roller Coaster Tycoon was the same. What's the challenge here? Where's the competition?

Yeah, you can build a cool creature, run around with him, build a cool world, but then what? And what's to stop you from doing it all the first time? Where can you fail?

Yeah, Robin Williams always goes to E3. Have yet to see him personally, but I watched the Unreal engine 3 demo with Sinbad last year.

Robin Williams definitely knows his stuff.
I got the impression he wasn't there to sell the game, that he just happened to be in the right place at the right time so they asked him, spur of the moment, to demonstrate it.
And he did a great job.

I'm still not sold. The technology is amazing. But all the creatures end up looking similar. And I'm just not fully convinced it will make for a fun game. I'm still thinking it's the type of thing you'll play once or twice and then have nothing new to do.

Robin Williams has been to many E3's before. I know of at least two others he has been at before.

Did you know that 1 lb of yummy delicious ripe strawberries only has 146 calories,36g carbs, 9g fiber,3g protein,1g fat and 475% daily Vit.C? 1 Snickers bar has 280 calories,35g carbs,14g fat.Eat strawberries!

Roll on Spore. This shit is going to take over my life :/

The idea is cool but do we really know what the gameplay is going to be? Apparently the first few "levels" are like pacman. We get near total control over the race we create but, much like Black and White (1 & 2), what looks cool in a 5 minute video may not actually be all that satisfying as a game. If you look at this guys recent pedigree it's all Sims (personally turned me off because if I want to play doll house I'll just head over to the East Wing where I keep my dollhouse room) which isn't exactly regarded as the best use of a GPU cycle. There's a whole host of ship customization in Gal Civ 2 (interesting policy they have on buying the game second hand - they won't support it. Meh.) but I could care less - I'm into the numbers not the aesthetics. If I'm meant to be delighted with playing with my alien doll then I don't think this "game" is going to do much for me. The later levels with Village sims and UFO assaults look simplified to the point of making claims of consolitis paltry in comparison.

Williams seems to be the real deal, though - after the Spore presentation, he talks games with the Joystiq chaps, and manages to come off convincing, discussing Populus and Black & White in the context of Spore. He says he's primarily a PC gamer and enjoys shooters. He's also been known to play Warhammer 40k.

Uh - and apparently his daughter is named Zelda ...

Actors do not seem the type of person to play games. They star in movies to avoid reality, they don't need to do it at home as well.

They star in movies to let me avoid reality for a bit. But whatever, they expel bodily waste the same way I do. Robin Williams won't sell me a game any more effectively than an advert would, but it's still cool he one of the down-to-earth actors/comedians. That's a hell of a lot more than some can say.

I dunno, I think Spore will either turn out to be not as open as we though(IE: what happened with the original sims, we saw these amazing demos of stuff happening, but in the end it always happens) or it's too big and there really isn't a game there but a novelty for a few days. Still really looking forward to it, but skeptical, really skeptical.... also the robin williams thing at e3 turns me off.

Spore looks great, but I wonder about replayability.

I don't know if it looks SimCity style, like I'll play it a ton, or The Sims style, like I'll play it once for one night then never touch it again.

I'd imagine somewhere between, but I worry that, after one or two times from start to space, I'll feel like there's nothing left to see (which was what happened to me after 2 hours of the Sims.)

BioShock has me drooling. As does Crysis. And Alan Wake (I think, what the hell is gameplay like?) On the console side, Gears of War and Smash Brothers Brawl has me giddy.

Where's a new Mario Kart?

I know what cha mean, Bucky. Video is almost painful to watch, since it looks like SO much fun (I just wanna shove Will out of his seat and scream "MY TURN!").

Liked the part about using the tractor beam to throw creatures into orbit.

Will has said 2007 and EA's cost estimates for up to March 2007 don't have it listed, so we probably won't be able to expect it before April 2007.

/cries

This is exactly why I never pay attention to E3...but Spore was too much to pass on.
