Small developers can get the same exposure or better from other Internet game channels. They can also certainly do better than giving up 50% of their profits. There is also no reason to rely exclusively on Steam although I am sure that Valve tries to force its contracts to be exclusive for Internet distribution. The point is that Steam is not the only answer, nor is it even the best one for the developers and especially not for the consumer. I really don't understand what your point is... it just seems to be another anti-Steam/Valve troll session. If Steam was such a shit deal then developers would avoid it, simple as. If they could get a better deal elsewhere then they would. Also, what evidence is there that any of these other services offer a better cut? Any at all, or is it pure conjecture? Sure, Oblivion will probably get a sweet deal but the average tiny developer isn't going to get close to that. Also, you have to take into account exposure and sales... they might get a 75% cut on another site but many potential customers might not find out about it, whilst Valve's 50% might result in a huge amount more money being made even though the amount per copy is less.
We get that you don't like Steam but if no-one wanted the service then it would disappear. Steam is just one of many online distribution methods that will appear over the coming years, it's not like any developer is forced into using Steam in the slightest. Distributing games though Steam is a win-win... it is a method of distribution that wasn't available before. It's another option. It's not claimed to be the rebirth of PC gaming but it certainly doesn't hurt.
