I'm sure that if it was up to MS, they'd simply stop supporting games in Vista, forcing everyone to go 360. In fact, if it wasn't for Nintendo and Sony, I think MS would have already done so.
That’s logically unsound.
The reason why Microsoft buffing up solely for the X360 is because of the imminent threat of the PS3 and Wii. X360, PS3, and Wii is in one domain. PC gaming is on the other domain. A domain which indirectly becomes clear if viewed from PC games MS also needs to win. Think X360, Wii and PS3 as Hamburgers. Windows gaming is the French Fries. If there are no more competitors selling Hamburgers, MS would sell more French Fries in addition to Hamburgers. Selling 2 products is more desirable than selling 1 product.
If MS stop supporting games in Vista, who would have bought Vista for Home? If people are happy playing games with the X60, is there really a push for an OS upgrade when Windows XP can satisfy all their needs? Why bother making a Vista Home edition and why there's still no IE7 or Office for the X360?
Windows is the cornerstone of MS because all of its newer technologies will be centering around it. MS wouldn't nver step to become Time Warner or Disney, because if it does that, MS geeks would cross allegiance to Linux, Oracle and Sun since computing are not MS priority anymore. Most programmers wouldn’t take pride of creating UI viewed in the TV screen, compared to making applet that takes advantage of web service. Microsoft is a geek company, not a lily-pansy set top gaming TV company. People take pride of their MCAD/MCSD, MCSE, and MCDBA certifications, and the idea of MS becoming a primarily lily-pansy set top gaming TV company is heinous to them.
