I don't think it is the end of PC gaming, but I do think Microsoft is shooting themselves in the foot with the Xbox and Xbox 360. Those consoles have had a negative impact on PC game development (see Halo, and now CoD). I think gaming is the single most compelling reason to use windows, and if MS kills that, they are going to lose big marketshare in the long run - more that they'll be able to make up with consoles.
I think you are very misinformed, actually.
Microsoft isn't shooting themselves in the foot with the Xbox/360. Sure, they've lost money on the whole deal so far, but they're getting to where they want to be. In the living room.
MS wants one of their products in every family's living room. So far they're already in every family's office, but that's not enough.
A MS VIP actually explained, about a year and a half or so ago, what their ultimate goal is.
1) Get in people's living rooms.
2) Provide a platform that can do a lot more than just play games. Make that platform an All-In-One Entertainment Center.
3) Charge for everything done on that platform.
Seriously, MS envisions people using the 360 (or it's sequel) to order pizza, for example. And taking 1% as a transaction fee.
The market place on 360? It's a brilliant idea. Microtransactions. Several hundred thousand people have bought Oblivions add-ons. Microsoft gets a percentage of every transaction.
Now think of people using the 360 for, say, 75% of all their entertainment and communication needs, and MS getting a slice on every single transaction. You're talking the kind of money that makes even Bill swoon.
THAT is where they are going. The games are peanuts for MS. Chump change. They really don't care that much about them.
But the transactions, that has them hard.
As for the PC, please, gaming probably isn't even a single percent of the Windows market. Do you really think MS makes money off those individual OEM copies that gamers buy? Get real.
The real money comes from the corporations that have Select deals, from Server licensing, and from Office. Windows workstation itself isn't even the biggest moneymaker in their software department.
And they definitely pay little attention to the PC gamers.
I'm sure that if it was up to MS, they'd simply stop supporting games in Vista, forcing everyone to go 360. In fact, if it wasn't for Nintendo and Sony, I think MS would have already done so.
