Your single player campaign is now just a bunch of skirmish maps against the skirmish AI? Why even bother calling it a single player game?
For that matter, if that's all it is, why has it taken you over a year to make this expansion? You've already done 5 races, I'm sure by now you have a pretty good idea of the hp/damage values of similar units to make balancing a simple scenario.
Sigh. I love this game. It totally rocks. But I want to see a GOOD singleplayer campaign in it. It looks like that's never going to happen.

Edit : Read through a preview about the single player on Gamespot, and it does have the potential to be interesting. In any case, I lurv WH40K, so I'll pick it up anyways.

I'm not sure about you but I almost never zoomed in or out while playing so adding something to the zoom features should be painless for most people? Am I the only one that never messed with the camera/zoom while playing?
Nope, I play most RTS games zoomed out. Because it's the most efficient way to play the game. However, it's pretty much a waste of nice graphics. While I'd like to zoom in and enjoy the scenery, I can't play the game that way.
If you'd like to play a RTS game where you can play and actually make use of your new graphics card, give the Rise and Fall demo a try. Being able to play a RTS in first person mode as your hero makes it interesting. Raiding a fortress with an army while walking among them is a cool experience.

So is this metamap thing going to be something you have control over, like the campaign maps in the Total War series or the galaxy map in Empires at War?

They aren't just going to tear up the interface and potentially alienate hundreds of existing gamers I don't see how adding to the interface would alienate anyone. If pressing tab brought up a new viewscreen that basically show'd an overhead of the whole map along with icon of which units were available you could better manage the battlefield. Old school gamers could just ignore this feature if they don't like it. As far as the interface bar goes I think SW EAW came up with a great solution, at maximum zoom out, if you try and zoom out more it just drops the interface bar for the first step, you want it back you just roll your mouse bar forward.

SW EAW took it a step further and offered 2 more zoom out levels that gave you an even greater field of view. I want to see this in more games, especially this one, because it stays true to the old style interface bar many are used to and allows other players, who want to see more of the battle, to enjoy the game as well.
(I don't even own SW EAW! I just played the demo and the interface is a major improvement in my book over the interface we see in DoW.) This comment was edited on May 1, 18:24. |

I think the Multiplayer side of this game should be the focus of the expansion, the single player side is important but the multiplayer side is what got me to come back when winter assault came out. Die.
The single-player campaign is generally the kind of thing that makes or breaks my enjoyment of an RTS.

You could always not rotate the camera.

Unless the units got less detailed or something as you zoomed out, I don't think they could do that. Depending what your running and what settings your running at, this game is a very demanding one on your system once large battles are going. Heck, 2v2s are lagging enough on my rig. I think zooming out would only increase lag showing more units and graphics on screen. This is probably their excuse also. My only gripe I have is if they could set the camera similar to how Warcraft 3s. More static though does allow zooming more for show than anything. I hate games that have rotatable cameras and zooms, though don't zip back to the normal view after you do it. Camera rotation is the death of RTS!

MP is geting a bit of love in this, as they are ditching the dire gamespy matchmaing and using something far better that actually works.
Tyranids wont be in until a full blown sequel, as the current engine couldnt support what they want to do with them.

Come on guys, its an expansion pack ffs.
They aren't just going to tear up the interface and potentially alienate hundreds of existing gamers, even if it is in dire need of work (I'm sure I aint the only person who thinks the autonomous old-skool C&C way of doing it is miles better than having to click on a production building and dig through sub-menus in order to do anything)...
The improved & transparent interface will all be happening in DoW2.

I just want to be able to zoom out! I hate being able to only see a tiny portion of the map at one time. If nothing else, design in a system like homeworld had where you could bring up a screen that showed the entire battle area and everything was a simple icon and you could give order from there.
From there you could phase out the whole interface bar at the bottom and make the interface transparent and open up that much more of the screen.
Heck, copy Empire at war, that interface is a lot better. You can easily zoom out farther, and you still get the menu bar when you need it. This comment was edited on May 1, 11:11. |
