Prey-orders & Prey Collector's Edition Announced

2K Games Announces Prey Pre-Order Program has word on the incentives being offered to buy Prey prior to the release of Human Head's first-person shooter along with details on a Collector's Edition:

The Limited Collector's Edition is available for both the Xbox 360™ and PC editions of Prey and includes a special metal packaging upgrade, two die-cast pewter figurines including the lead character Tommy and the alien Hunter, a free download to a Prey soundtrack, and "The Art of Prey" book featuring collected conceptual and development images from the artists behind Prey. In addition, the PC Limited Collector’s Edition will include an upgrade to DVD media from CD-ROM.

Customers who pre-order either the Limited Collector’s Edition or standard edition of Prey on either Xbox 360 or PC will receive a die-cast pewter figurine of Mutate. The Mutate is a melding of the DNA of human and alien victims of the living Sphere, possessing a massive claw that it uses in-game to impale its enemies in a spinning attack. All four versions of Prey will be released simultaneously this July.

The Prey Limited Collector’s Edition is a single production run available on a first-come, first-served basis. Both the Limited Collector’s Edition and the Pre-Order program are available while supplies last at participating retailers.

Customers who have previously pre-ordered Prey are automatically “grandfathered” into the incentive based Pre-Order program. Prey is developed by Human Head Studios and Venom Games and produced by 3D Realms. For more information on Prey and a list of participating retailers, please visit www.prey.com.

At the time, they were the latest model 16x-Speed DVD drives from Samsung and Sony, although the Sony read at 16x and burned at 8x. Since that time, I've upgraded to the newer Sony which will burn DVD's at 16x and the same problem occurs.

I've always just assumed there was some minor difference in how they set up the lasers or whatever. Around the same time as I got those first two, I also got an Asus CDR-W drive and that was the most finicky fecker of a thing I ever got. I tried several brands of blank media before finding one it would burn to or read from.

Its probably due to the age of the drives rather than make.

I got an OEM version of Win Pro x64 with all the new hardware I bought, so it can be got. It wasn't until a couple of days after I'd put it all together, that I recalled Win XP Pro 32 supporting multiple CPU's, which killed my idea of having to have x64.

As for the problem DVD drives and software. I think there are some variables to it. On this machine, I have both SONY and SAMSUNG DVD drives. So far, knocking on wood, whenever the SONY won't read one the SAMSUNG will and vice versa.

Maybe its down to the DRM, NOT the DVD format.

All more reason to boycott DRM like StarForce.

DRM has been proven to NOT work with all DVD Drives wheras CLEAN formats DO.

As for the DVD argument. I've seen a few DVD drives that fail to recognize a DVD but I can't recall ever having one fail to pickup a CD, so maybe it's still a more reliable format. In any case, it's not just this game. I had to pay more to get UT2K4, FEAR and Quake4 on DVD.

My brother's DVD-R refused to read about half of his game DVD's (all legit) after installing it. He was pretty pissed.

It wound up being something he installed that came with the drive, I don't remember if it was the DVD video player or the burning software. The instant he uninstalled it, he was able to read all of the games.

The dual core CPU's can be run with an SMP driver for Windows 32bit also (in Windows Pro).

Do OEM's ship 64bit Windows for their AMD 64 OEM hardware? Not that I know of.

For some reason, I got it into my head I needed the Win x64 to take adantage of DC CPU's. Everything on my new system is 64bit, so no problems there.

Thanks for the headsup.

Is all your subsytems and drivers 64bit? If you even have one part 32bit you are hosed. 64bit is a waste of time outside the datacenter at the present time, its more a marketing gimmic.

Sometime last year they mentioned this game was coming out with something akin to Steam. Anyone know if that is still the case with Prey?

Also, will this run out of the box on XP x64?

DVD games have been in the majority ever since PS2 shipped to stores.

>On theyre website they ASK us to enter our date of birth, what kind of crap is that

It's just a CYA thing. If Childignorer Mommy and Deadbeat Dad want to sue the publishers because "they put filth on the web and a minor saw it", the company will just say that the minor lied on his age, and that'd be it.

A bigger piss off is that movie sites do NOT have that CYA crap.

Uhhh, Yeah, this is THE singular reason I DID NOT buy Far Cry.

Yeah...reminds me of Baldur's Gate. Ironically that DID get put on DVD by Interplay.

when I was at lionhead I heard that the reason many games are still on CD is that the CD copy protection is more reliable than the DVD type.

I've heard many reasons, probably the most transparent being the DVDs cost more to make. Even so, I think this is one of those cases where biting the bullet and publishing exlusively on the better format would just benefit everyone all around.

why pre-order a game anyway? all these incentives are to get you to buy before you try. If it kicked ass, there would be a demo out a month beforehand.
Exactly, practice smart consumerism guys, not drooling fanboi dumbassness. If you honestly HAVE to have it 1 day before stores (and sometimes later than stores - "these things happen"), then you deserve getting bit in the ass by bugs and shitty gameplay. Read a review, listen to your peers, buy smart.

Grrrr, stupid "value add" marketing BS to justify the overpriced DVD, which I would say costs less to produce than five or six regular CDs.

I will indeed boycott any game like this until the DVD version's price drops to the price of the regular CD version. If it takes them too long and I lose interest (*cough*quake4) then sorry, they lose the sale altogether.

Hey smart marketing people, check the hardware poll o'er at the Valve site and see what percentage of people only have a cdrom.

No DVD No Sale. Is it DVD preorder in EUrope and CD in backwater USA then?

Does anybody know what DRM they are using? - the only way to fight DRM is by making it a purchasing decision. we should mail them to ask what DRM they are using to see how honest they are.:)

On theyre website they ASK us to enter our date of birth, what kind of crap is that LOL everybody will enter something like 1945.01.01 to get to see it. Its a pointless hassle. I bet its the same when I want a reminder on my muliplayer password. ITs a stupid bad waste of time for the consumer. I lost my Ubisoft accounts this way, It asks for a dob that I just enter gibberish for.

Uhhh, Yeah, this is THE singular reason I DID NOT buy Far Cry. WTF, when did I become a cd factory when the DVD (elusive as it is) is out there somewhere. DVD's aren't the minority WTF?

Thanks,

In case you haven't bought a game lately, dvd is still the minority..

Oh yes, they are indeed still in the minority. I think we're long overdue for seeing software being published on the DVD format.
