Anyway, it would all be a moot point IF bthesda had released (or was planning to release) a mesh importer/exporter, which they have stated that the they can't/won't, due to licencing issues with Havok.
Did they? Wow that's pretty sad. It looks like a clear case of not wanting to look as bad as they did when the Morrowind community trounced their models with such authority that it was embarrassing. 
Anyway, if they don't release, some slick hacker will throw together a tool.
As far as personal feeling on the $2 thing goes. They have every right to do so, and the business end to back it up. I think what bothers me about it is summed up like this:
"World receives Oblivion with huge accolades! Reviews, both 'pro' and gamer, praise the game! Fans line up and pre-order, anything they can do to get the game faster! It sells in droves!!!"
Bethesda's big "Thank you" to the community?
"Here's some armor we obviously had for the release but withheld so we could release it later. That'll be $2, please. Yes, we know we gave out half a dozen free mods for Morrowind! That'll be $2, please."
