Out of the Blue

So I keep getting errors playing QuickTime movies on my computer, getting messages that a vital component is missing. Fed up with this I went to the Apple site to pick up a full install of the latest version, only to learn this apparently can only be installed as part of an iTunes installation. Is this really the only way to properly update QuickTime now? Rather than force me to install iTunes, this just has me ignoring this problem for now.

Snakes on a Plane.

I first saw the trailer online as a first load add kind of thing, the computer that it was loading on has no sound card, I couldn't hear anything, but I watched it and I thought is was an SNL skit or something.

Having watched the trailer with sound, I now wish it was a skit.

You could just use VLC, which plays virtually any format, and streams it to other VLC clients in the house. And it's free.

I'll second the VLC motion. I love that program.

CNN.com just got a new layout. I refreshed and BAM! something completely different.

Not bad.

I thought the exact opposite...every time they redo their page, it gets uglier and uglier...

If there is one thing communist that apple does, this is it.
Eh, I'm sure you meant to say capitalist.

Been having endless probles with QT and iTunes.
Never had any problems with either, and that's on both Win XP and Mac OS X.

Well, I broke down and installed Oblivion. I'm surprised at how good it looks and runs on my rig (intel 2.6c, 1 gig'o'ram, 9800pro). It's extremely playable at 800x600 with settings higher than I'd have thought possible.

Been having endless probles with QT and iTunes.
Everything was working fine till I got my iPod which forced me to install iTunes which in turn stopped QT from working.. forever. No amount of reinstalls, standalones, or alternatives works. Any QT movies play without sound and crash the moment you try and do anything (like close the damn player!).

So fed up with it right now I haven't even connected my iPod to my computer for weeks now till I figure this out.. (not to mention iTunes deciding to automatically delete all my mp3's without telling me.. )

Unfortunately I use QT Alternative and in Firefox QT videos never load. And as last I checked QT wants to install crap in my Systray I have no interest in it (yes I know it's easy to remove).

I used to have the same trouble, but then during some reinstall or other the problem stopped. The world of codecs (especially streaming) is arcane and mysterious.

it really is funny how hard they made it to find the standalone player. they REALLY want you to install iTunes. i guess that's their business. it was so hard for me to find when i did a reformat last month that i thought i was imagining that it even existed.

From the main page that Blue linked to, click on the blue "Free Download" button in the center of the page.

On the next screen, instead of entering your e-mail, look at the list of links on the right, towards the bottom. One of them is "QuickTime Standalone Installer"

I refused to put QT on my computer too because of I tune, but as pointed out I had problems with the alternative in Firefox.

Thanks for the link because I sure couldn't find it!

Nice, but how did you find that link? I couldn't seem to find it on the quicktime main page or downloads page. I hate it when companies make the more desireable option hard to find. If there is one thing communist that apple does, this is it.

... those Elder Scrolls Panoramas are damned impressive. Too bad. I think Oblivion would break my computer

And what is good, Phaedrus, and what is not good -
Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?

Personally I dont see the advantages of QT over other formats but then I know little about web media.

Alternately, you could use the Quicktime Alternative. Then you don't really have to deal with Apple much at all.
