Galactic Civilizations II Beta Patch

The Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords Website (thanks Frans) now offers a new beta patch to update Stardock's spacey sequel to beta version 1.1. After stressing that installing a beta patch is a potentially risky move, they go on to explain: "To find out what we've added, tweaked, enhanced, fixed, etc. you can read the [full history here]. That history is just what's new in 1.1 beta over 1.0X. If it's not listed in there, we didn't do it yet. We have other things we plan to do with 1.1 (such as the modding features) and then that'll be 1.1. Other stuff will go into the next free update."

You all must be blind fanboys cause this game shipped with some GLARING bugs, that other companies would take a lot of heat for if they did the same thing. Bugs with making and using fleets, bugs with disappearing ships, inconsistencies in navigating the interface.

And everyone caught up in the starforce debate saying
"OMG How can starforce promote piracy like that???? I'm gonna buy this game just for that reason!"

Stardock is a big company but they're always going on like they're still small time, well if they want me to buy their game they're gonna have to make it the way I want *EDIT* (which also happens to be the right way)

Note that this is not the real WarPig -- he has >2000 posts. This is some lame ass imposter.

I thought it was pretty obvious from the first post that it wasn't the real WarPig.

Well they didn't put out a demo and I wanted to play it and I don't have 45 bucks to waste.

I'm sorry, the world doesn't work that way. If you want to play it, then you put up your money. Period. No demo? Then you don't play.

I don't even feel like playing the unpatched game , why? cause of the bugs

You've mentioned a couple of cosmetic issues... and they're preventing you from playing the game with any enjoyment? Do any games actually meet your standards for purchase?

See, your claims are bullshit -- you'll never buy it. You're just using the excuse of pirates everywhere to justify what they're doing.

And screwing over a company that has explicitly chosen not to put draconian copy protection on their game just proves how much of a slimeball you are.

"So, you've mentioned a few things you don't like. How is it that you classify these things as bugs?"

Trolls have a magic spell that converts feature requests into bugs. I believe they get it at level 10. They use it when they are low on bugs.

So instead I downloaded what was essentially a BETA and helped BUGTEST it for them for free. They've probably used about 2 of my suggetions so far.

I'll buy the patched version later if it's good enough and in the meantime I don't even feel like playing the unpatched game , why? cause of the bugs.

And I don't really feel like reading that novel length change log for a patch i can't use.

You're ripping off Stardock? That's pretty low. Ever hear of karma?

And I started reading the patch notes but it's like friggin' War and Peace. Busy little beavers. I'm actually almost ready to forgive them for the Totalgaming debacle. If I wasn't busily following my new career as an assassin in Cyrodil (sp) I'd have to dust off my copy.

I think wrapping the map around would be ok as an OPTION. I like the idea because it would give extra dimension to the map. And the universe isn't exactly flat like it is in GalCiv, so whats your point.

I heard Stardock struck a deal with Steam for online distribution, and StarForce for retail.

That's why you should read the change log. There are already dozens of fixes in the 1.1 beta, and that's not even a complete list. And wrapping a galaxy map around doesn't make sense. The universe is not a sphere like Earth is.

Huh what. What was my point? Oh yea new features arn't as important as fixing bugs/annoying interface things. Like when clicking "done" after building a ship from the planet view dumps you back into space. Also clicking a ship centers the camera on the ship which is annoying cause i didn't need the camera to move in the first place. Maybe they've fixed these things I dont know I can't use the patch if you know what I mean, hahaha.

But if they can fix the bugs AND do new features hey that's cool. At least they took my suggestion to remove the useless clutter in the ship design window.

Uhh what else oh yea a awesome feature to have would be able to play on maps that WRAP around. I suggested it to them but they said it would be unrealistic...uhhhh ok.....

I would hope there is more then just enhancements.

You didn't read the change log, did you. You might want to.

...but you have to acknowledge the bugs...

What bugs are those? I've only found the one where my cursor disappears. Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary has happened at all.

I would hope there is more then just enhancements. Because there's really a lot of bugs in this game that are holding it back. It's still an awesome game but you have to acknowledge the bugs because at this point basically the customers are doing the beta testing.

It's the same level of support they gave to the first Galactic Civilizations game, too. They just kept adding more and more to the game. They really listen to their customers and try and be proactive in adding new features and gameplay.

The AI is so devilishly clever sometimes, it's hard to believe.

These guys are quickly becoming my favorite devs. This is the third patch I believe, and most of what they are doing is not bug fixes, it is instead game updates and added features that the community has requested. The amount of effort they've put into this game after it went retail is simply astounding; I'm fairly sure they've figured out the secrect to remaining functional while never sleeping. Too see how much these guys support the game hit galciv2.com and check out the dev journals, you'll simply be amazed.

As far as the patch goes, it works fine on my end. Haven't yet had a chance to test the new AI out too much, but the updated ship creator is now even more addicting than before (I didn't know it was possible). Game start influence blindness is great, the ability to see autopilot paths and time, no more social production waste, constructors now show starbase influence range before you build......*faints*

This is a phenomenal game. The AI kicked ass before they made it even better (side note: each race has a separate AI, instead of one AI with racial tweaks). Really can't say enough good things about this game....if you're on the fence about this game, go buy it now. If you don't even like 4X games, go buy it now. It really is that good.
