So now some of the most expensive retail machines on the planet will come with Dell's refurbed parts. I'm so glad I can't afford one.

Hooking everything up take maybe an hour max.
An hour huh? Guess your not installing a Windows OS then. (takes at least hour by itself)
If your using your old hard drive then it just amatter of updating drivers for your chipset and stuff.
Have you ever tried using your old HDD with a new motherboard? Its easier to format it and start fresh than to get it working with the old s/w. (been there tried that...won't try again) |

Dell said Alienware would operate as a wholly owned subsidiary and will keep its brand name and its own product development, marketing, sales, technical support and other operations.
Hopefully this means it won't dillute the Alienware product. |

What the hell is a "community collage"?
Take your lame ass back to myspace, boy. The point I was making is that building your own machine is a choice. You either want to do it or you don't. Ripping on people who don't mind spending a little more money and saving time on an Alienware or Falcon is ludicrous. The reason I brought up my work is that I have been building my own for a long time, and I don't why some of you think it's so special. I buy all Dells for my company these days, and they run as solid as any computer I have ever built. My staff never complains about them. Nice try, ripping on my job. I suppose we should believe you have a better one, eh? Is this the part where we compare our e-penis?
The fact that you call the research involved in building a high end gaming machine "light reading" is exactly my point. When you come back down to reality from your ubergeek mothership, you will agree with everyone else here who knows a damn thing about computers, that building a high end machine, especially if you don't keep up with the hardware on a month by month basis, can take quit a bit of "light reading" (read: time). If someone doesn't want to go through all of that, I don't see why you should care. Another poster mentioned warranty work. That's one of the biggest reason we go with Dell at work, and why I tell people to buy Dells for home. They are cheap, and they have decent support. Not every gamer knows the hardware inside and out. The two things aren't tied together, except in your mind.

"Community collage"? Is that an arts and crafts expo at the local YMCA?
As for the story, honestly it makes alot of sense. Alienware is already the Dell of gaming computers. That is to say, behind the curve and overpriced for the quality and service.

MindTrigger it seems to me that your the one that thinks your hot shit. I.T. Director..You must have spent many an hour at community college to get that lofty position.
Its NOT a special thing to build your own! You don't need to be a super dork you jackass. Its not fucking rocket science. Companies like Dell who charge you an arm and a leg for something anyone can do with a little light reading.
Its alot like a cook that hopes nobody figures out how to operate the microwave because he would be out of a job.

Fausticle,
Now bear in mind that I've built all but my first desktop(486DX2/66) that I've ever owned, but I certainly understand Fourpak's point of view.
One can put a considerable amount of time into building their own machine if they research the different components and compare and contrast their options, select vendors to purchase from (though seems like everyone just uses newegg.com these days, and hey they've worked great for me, too), wait for it all to arrive, assemble it, and troubleshoot issues(if any).
The other option, for someone with the money to spare -- can spend 30 minutes selecting and ordering a preconfigured gaming rig that they know will work well out of the box and they can even get a warranty so that its someone elses problem to come out and touch it if something goes wrong, further saving time for someone with a busy lifestyle(hey, maybe they work 70 hours a week and want to enjoy the hours they're not at work).
Is it less time doing it on your own than it is to earn the money to pay for it? For most people, yes, but some of us can bank $3000(or much more) in a week, and to that crowd its not likely as big of a deal, and not worth the stress of doing for themself.
EDIT: Amen Mindtrigger, precisely the way I see it.

I love this. This is the part where you fuckin dorks sit here and rip on people for buying Alienware machines, because you think you are somehow "special" for building your own machines.
I've been building my own machines, and countless other machines/servers since like 1992, including my gaming rig I'm typing on right now. Big fuckin' deal. I do it because I am INTERESTED in doing it. I happen to be an I.T. Director. At some point when I become disinterested in building my own, I will buy an XPS, Alienware or Falcon box. Why you ask? Why the hell not? They all run great, and the games I want to play work on them.
So what if they are a little overpriced sometimes. If money isn't a concern, or you have more money then time to waste geeking out on the net looking for your ultimate computer dream list of parts, then one of these pre-built gaming rigs will be more than good enough. (GASP) you can even upgrade it with non-oem parts later!!
Dorksquad: get over yourselves. You aren't cool because you build your own machine. If you think you are, perhaps you should step out into the sun once in a while.

At worst your doing a clean build.Go install and have some beers! If you think how long it takes to make the money to pay for the little alien sticker VS how long it takes to build one from scratch. ..ok lol mabe there are some REALLY lazy people out there.

Why would anyone buy an Alienware - apart from those who know zip about hardware? 2 reasons: 1. how much is my time worth to me 2. how slug-lazy am i Answer: Lots, and Very. Sure i could spend a weekend gathering all the pieces and assembling them (and then another weekend exchanging the defective parts) OR i could just order the system and spend the weekend swillling beer and playing Oblivion.
edit btw the above was true only of the old original Alien, this new Corporate Dell/Alien mongrel will dilute their product line with "value" junk and mass market practices trying to appeal to (rip off) the mainstream NON-Hardcore-gamer crowd.
Alien is just another giant corporation now.

XPS 600 Renegade "Fueled by fire" ... Nevermind the fact that "fire" will actually "destroy" their 'puter.
Bunch of marketing suits sitting in a room throw into a hat A. a bunch of "cool" generic acronym like words, B. a bunch of "cool" number beginning with 100; incremented by 100, C. a bunch of "cool edgy" words. Stir for two minutes and out they pulled XPS, 600, Renegade. Slap on some "fire" stickers and call it a day! They could just as easily pulled out...
