X3: Reunion Playable Demo

This Egosoft Downloads Page has the playable demo for X³: Reunion in either English or German, offering the chance to sample the space exploration and combat sequel. For those with Starforce-phobia, the page states up front that this copy protection is indeed present in the demos. Word on the Egosoft Website is: "This playable demo walks you through key game concepts in a limited game universe. Don't imagine that it will all be plain sailing though. The deadly Kha'ak will be there too and you will have to contend with their presence while you learn about the other aspects of the game." The English demo is mirrored on 3D Downloads, 3D Gamers, FileFront, Gamer's Hell, and Worthplaying.

starforce = NO interest in the title at all.

it's a trojan no matter how they justify disabling software that is , in THEIR opinion, only used by hackers.

As far as copy protection, get over it. They're going to do it no matter how many people bitch and complain.
That opinion is simply ignorant. Some publishers have removed Starforce and other copy-protections after customer complaints. Midway removed Starforce from Area 51 in the update for that very reason. It's crap and does more harm to paying customers than any possible offset in sales. If people want Starforce removed from games, then complaining often to the publisher is what they must do.

X3 was a horrible disappointment. You are far better off giving your money to Stardock's Galactic Civilizations 2. It's about TEN TIMES the game X3 is.

Woot! Damn, GalCiv2 is jam packed with all kinds of stuff and they keep adding to it. It's gonna take a while to go through those tutorials. My serial # from my gogamer purchase qualified for all those extras you get with a pre-order. And I didn't need any resident stardock/steam software or even need to reboot (although it said to) to play the game. Customer trust FTW!

or buy Space Rangers 2. Except that had Starforce too, in Europe anyway.

I've Starforce on my system and it hasn't affected me. I consider it a fair tradeoff to play the games I want while rewarding those who make them. This is my opinion and I just want to redress the balance of all the anti-Starforce hysteria I keep reading.

Quite frankly I don't care if you can name a single postive or negative effect starforce has. Games have no < insert deity here > damn right to install a freakin' driver onto my system! Games don't need their own device drivers. That's just asking for a system to be more unstable. It's inexcusable, dirty, underhanded, and unnecessary.

I agree but thats not whast 99% of the complaints are about. Its people pontificating on how unstable and outright damaging the program allegedly is. If someone starts a petition complaining about the stealth installs I'll be right there signing it like everyone else but just mouthing the same bullshit that everyone else is without any basis in fact isn't going to stop a fucking thing. Al it does is make for tiresome reading on every game related thread here and elsewhere.

As far as copy protection, get over it. They're going to do it no matter how many people bitch and complain.

What...and the game wasn't warez'd anyway?
The argument is silly; x3 has been cracked too, so why use that bollocks excuse?

The unfinished relase of this game is travesty. Read the reviews. They explain the shape of this game. It's still got annoying bugs that for most people (except the diehard fans) is enough to stop playing it

Actually, since 1.3 the game has been very stable and very playable. I can't think of a single bug that stops people from playing it. I will admit that the release client was a fucking joke, and Egosoft paid dearly for it (X3 didn't sell as well as X2).

If you can stomach the serious sim nature of the game, X is a great way to lose several months.
In the end, however, the simple fact that this game =
X2 - content + some new graphics has made it pretty boring for me. I'll sometimes start it up again and play for a little while, and then get bored again. There just isn't enough to do compared to X2.
Also, while the plot is marginally better, it's still pretty bad. Professional screenwriter my ass. The final battle is also complete bullshit.
On my Athlon64 3500+, 1GIG Ram, Radeon X800XL, nForce 4 mobo, the final battle ran at approximately 1fps. In this battle, you are given a ship, you are NOT allowed to take your own ship, you are GIVEN a pisspoor M3 that flies 112m/s, and you have to face off against about 500 Khaak.
The Khaak all have instahit weapons, and they fly faster than you. Ie, you die. All the time. Egosoft swears the mission is doable, but the only way I can see you actually complete the mission is by immediately fleeing as soon as it starts, and pray that the NPC forces will wipe out the Khaak.

Then the final cutscene starts, and it ran, seriously, at one frame per ten seconds on my machine.
I switched everything down to low, resolution to 800x600, and then my performance went up to about 1 frame per two seconds.

X3 was a horrible disappointment. You are far better off giving your money to Stardock's Galactic Civilizations 2. It's about TEN TIMES the game X3 is.

Enlight
Does anyone have a copy of the U.S. retail release of this game from Enlight? If so, does it have Starforce in it? I have read conflicting reports.

I generally like space combat games, but I won't touch it if it has Starforce in it.

"KHHHHAAAAA'AAAAKKK!"

True. Time to download, 1 hour, time until I just didn't care to try to figure out what was going on, 10 minutes, days before Oblivion, 14.

Google seems to indicate there are heaps of cracks for the retail version already. No idea if they work though.

those are probably just mini-image files that one would use with an emulator. They're not true cracks.

It's so that crackers can't use the demo's exe to create hacks for the retail game... Still don't agree with Starforce's philosophy though and I'm worried it will damage my DVD drive...

It causes problems with a lot of CD/DVD burners, it opens your system up to virus attack, it affects Alt-tabbing out of games, etc.

Do me a favor, just for my own information. You just named 3 things that Star-Force affects. Go into detail how each one is affected and give actual examples...not just vague bullett points. Given the extent to which people like yourself claim there are issues then it shouldn't be difficult to come up with extensive info on it. Also, no issues or links to said issues should not be older than the date of the last couple build upgrades.

I'm one of those lucky guys that the program hasn't affected at all. I'm not claiming it isn't causing issues its just that I see a lot of people jumping on the dogpile out of their memory of the 1st couple of builds of the program which did cause havoc with drives. Is it a loud vocal minority or are people still actually having the same problems? I wish someone would find out because having to read the endless fucking whining on threads like this regarding every single copy protected game that comes out really really sucks.

First, why is a demo copy protected? Second, ain't no way I'm touching this.

Rainbow 6 Lockdown is a prime example of why they use Starforce in a demo. They spent 6 figures to liscense the program yet released the demo without using it so people simply used that to crack the full game.

Perhaps people would tolerate Starforce if it didn't fuck with your system so much. It causes problems with a lot of CD/DVD burners, it opens your system up to virus attack, it affects Alt-tabbing out of games, etc. A copy protection should only stop a copied game disc being used, not install drivers, add a software layer between devices and Windows and affect dozens of other programs.

As for X3... what a disaster. I thought it was going to be one of the best games of the year, not one of the worst.

Fuck Egosoft and Enlight. I won't be purchasing any of their software until they stop with the Starforce bullshit.

I mean...haven't they heard of Daemon Tools? This shit does nothing except hurt legit users. *sigh*

Oh Boy. Someone has been watching a little too much porno.

We have to fight The Deadly Cock in the demo?

No Thanks.

I would rather wrestle The Deadly Twa'aaat
