It should help lower prices of smaller LCD screens and anything that furthers LCD tech is great, especially those lower resposne times. I'm still looking for a decent 37-45" 1080p LCD TV.

Why not just go projector if you want a screen that big? Either you don't have the space for a projector (and yet, somehow, you have space for a 100" screen...) or you have light output issues (the direct LCD will be brighter than an LCD projector).
Of course, the real reason is that it a showcase technology. I doubt they're actually planning to bring it to market, but showing that you can manufacture such a beast is impressive in and of itself.

That's just insane. Really, what is the point? Why not just go projector if you want a screen that big?
All I can think of is how you're going to throw that sucker out curbside when its obsolete in 5 years.
