Out of the Blue

As the most obvious signs of steroid abuse diminish in baseball, I find my interest in the game returning a bit. I've even been watching some spring training games, which is good prep, since they are played in such a lax way that it makes regular season games (which can be a bit leisurely as well) seem positively urgent by comparison.

My ssid isn't broadcast, and fuck me if XP would ever connect to it.

Neither is mine. As it eventually turned out, the issue was that there's a freaking button on the laptop to turn on the wireless card. And it has to be pressed every reboot. Yay!

How do I know this? Well, see, I got to go back to Fry's today... after posting those last couple of posts I closed the lid on the laptop, it went into sleep mode... and wouldn't come out. Nor would it boot up. Or do anything else at that point. We then went to a friend's kid's birthday party, and I took the laptop back to Fry's afterwards. Seems that the fan was never kicking on and the CPU was overheating. And now it'll take 3-4 weeks since they have to order the part.

A local admin should be able to take ownership of every single damn file on the machine.

Sadly, I can think of reasons why you may not want this, but it all goes back to the craptacular lack of multi-user heritage in Windows. But, hey, it's not like they had a 25 year old multi-user system to look at when thinking about this, or other systems which were 40 years old at the time. Nope.

And, from nin:

So the Barts disc didn't work, Z?

I haven't had a chance to download and try it yet. I already have Knoppix burned, and even booted the CD, but then I had to go to Fry's for the third time this weekend. Oh, and did I mention that it's a half hour away (if there's no traffic -- which there really isn't on Sunday)? I've spent over 6 hours this weekend either at the store or in transit to and from the damned place.

Between all the computer problems this weekend and my daughter deciding not to sleep I'm actually kinda looking forward to going to work tomorrow... assuming that all my cron jobs actually ran this weekend. Otherwise I'm in deep shit there too. I'm not taking bets at this point.

It wasn't even an option

Shit, so much for XP's vaunted "wireless support."
I couldn't get my wireless to work on XP either. My ssid isn't broadcast, and fuck me if XP would ever connect to it.

So, pissed off to hell again we headed back to Fry's. And, lo and behold, they'd already repaired our laptop (full system board replacement!), so now that's back. Hooray. (The space bar on this new board is a little finicky, but no big deal)

That's not the system board, just the keyboard. You can replace those easily. I've replaced a million keyboards on laptops, they all break. Sucky system.

As for the files -- I took ownership of them to my own account. I'll try doing it again while logged in as Administrator, taking ownership of them and then trying to delete them.

That shouldn't really make a difference, but who knows. While the administrator account should just be local administrator, same as your own account when it's local administrator, there seem to be some things that are slightly different.

Btw, how long has this bug been flying around? Years? I remember hearing about this when WinXP first came out. MS still hasn't fixed it? (And yes, it IS a bug. A local admin should be able to take ownership of every single damn file on the machine.)

I'm not sure that'll solve the problem though, since what it does is load the NTFS DLLs through an emulation layer to let you write to the NTFS drives

Yeah, but the security layer isn't there afaik. So while knoppix uses the same NTFS dll's, there is no security layer interpreting them. This is why the true ownership bit of Vista gets so much publicity and pushing from Microsoft, supposedly those files simply will not open for ANYTHING except the person who owns them.
NTFS still needs the security layer to interpret it.

Hope it works bud.

She normally does, but her 2-year molars are coming in right now so she's not sleeping well and being very cranky. She did sleep through last night (although she didn't go to bed until nearly 10), so that was a relief.

Did you check the channel you're connecting on?

It wasn't even an option. This morning I tried to hook it up with no security at all -- no joy. Yay, the loaner laptop is busted. Pull out an old 802.11b PCMCIA card only to discover that there's no slot on the loaner (!). So, pissed off to hell again we headed back to Fry's. And, lo and behold, they'd already repaired our laptop (full system board replacement!), so now that's back. Hooray. (The space bar on this new board is a little finicky, but no big deal)

I thought knoppix did R/W, but maybe not.

I did some further research and it will... if you have the proper DLLs laying around. I'm not sure that'll solve the problem though, since what it does is load the NTFS DLLs through an emulation layer to let you write to the NTFS drives. I have it on CD already though, so it's worth trying.

Perhaps. I'm writing a short paper and doing a big PowerPoint presentation for my class. I'd definitely post the paper but this is a group project (Remember group projects? Fuck high school.) and portions of the paper are going to be written by others, so I'm not exactly sure if I'll be able to post anything. Maybe I'll post selections from the paper. We shall see.

Oh, I definitely thought it was a good movie, I just really got a headache from all the "intangibles" in the movie. Though ironically, I believe there was/is a conspiracy of sorts. Though I don't subscribe to the more wild ideas. Political assassinations by their very nature usually seek to reach some end and the conspirators themselves try to avoid reprisals. It was rather interesting Oswald was himself eliminated by Ruby, but that could've been him acting the vigilante too.

Best line in that film (and one of the greatest of any film, bar none), "You don't know shit 'cause you've never been fucked in the ass! You're not a bad-looking man, Mr. Garrison. When I get out, I'm gonna come visit you. Have some real fun!"

On a more serious note though, if you've never been to Dallas, the JFK museum (i.e. the book repository which is now the JFK museum - http://www.jfk.org/) walked along Elm, the grassy gnoll, the bridge, the sixth floor where Oswald was (supposedly) you can't really grasp all the intangibles.

When I was in Dallas for work a few years back I made a point of going down and checking that all out. Being there and seeing everything live is a whole different ball of wax. Seeing where Osawald shot from and looking at the footage of what happened to JFK there is simply no goddamn way he made the killing shot. It's simply impossible.

It's one of those things that you have to actually experience first hand to really understand it. The angle that best lines up with him being shot (because the street is a sharp declining S curve) is from the bridge/railroad tracks where many witnesses said they saw/heard a shot.

Regardless if you think it's a conspiracy or not (and I do, because like Donald Sutherland's character said, "kings are killed" and that's nothing new in human history), but you get a much better idea of the man and how many enemies he had by doing the museum tour. Kennedy pissed off a *lot* of people, not just the mob and military-industrial complex, because he was really trying to do the right thing.

The whole museum is an extremely powerful testament to a great man. You see loads of people crying in there. It was a strange thing to see men in their 50's and 60's who looked tough as nails (like ex-cop/military types) wiping tears out of their eyes. I even shed a few myself in there.

Overall it's an experience I can't recommend enough and something that every good American (and non-American) should make the effort to see. It's certainly been one of the more moving experiences in my life.

It is far from impossible.

This is easily doable, esp. for Oswald, a Marine marksman.

Marine marksmanship training in itself doesn't mean much. The Army considers effective shooting ranges out to 300 yards, by which I mean where you can expect to repeatedly hit targets with an iron site. The Marines shoot out to 500 yards, but the expectance at actually hitting anything is not that high. Their scout snipers are some of the best shooters in the world, but Oswald wasn't one of those.

The good news is, despite best efforts, we lost Viet Nam anyway.

That's a whole other argument that many people love to tie to Kennedy's past, but really has little to do with his death, IMO.

Please don't tell me you think this looks the least bit interesting - I had such high opinions of y'all. I've seen the preview of this thing 2-3 times, and it looks so, well, fucking bad, I almost laugh when any of these "gamers" open their pie-holes.

How the hell do people choose what previews to show before a movie? Every sci-fi or action flick I go to shows horror movie previews. A lot of them. WTF?!?!? I want to see previews for sci-fi/action movies. That's what I like and want to see. Do they really think they arte reaching their target audience that way?
