F.E.A.R. Sequels

Monolith scaring up new F.E.A.R.s on GameSpot has news that the horror-themed shooter experience of F.E.A.R. will continue even if Monolith's relationship with VU Games does not (Monolith was purchased by WBIE during development of F.E.A.R.). A possible publisher change does signal the possibility that the follow-up may carry a different tile (F.R.I.G.H.T.?), which seems to represent an interesting fracture for the franchise: Monolith's game will involve the Intellectual Property (characters, etc.), which they still own, and VU Games is rumored to be planning to continue using the title, which they own, for follow-ups of their own. Here's more on what Monolith has planned quoting company president Samantha Ryan:

Monolith is tailoring the sequel's content between the PC and console iterations. The practice of releasing IP on PCs first, then giving console versions a console-specific overhaul is becoming more and more common, as evidenced by Infinity Ward's Call of Duty franchise and Ubisoft's Far Cry franchise. Developers can use each platform's strengths and control schemes to deliver different experiences.

Ryan said, "We believe that the PC audience is entirely viable and can support a game just as it did support F.E.A.R. To deliver the best quality title, the PC needs to be a focus. We believe that next-gen will also be awesome, but again, it has some differences and this is the approach that we're going to try."

Translation: We're taking it easy & calling it paperwork before we actually do any real work on a sequel.

The only thing that was cut was the car chase sequence and it was cut for the same reason HL2s Blue Tentacles were... It just wasn't fun and didn't work very well in the context of the game...

I really did like the 'Ground Zero' type of ending it had, at least level wise.

But what sorta pisses me off is they did the same thing a few other companies did with it's game. They showed off Specific content and then it was nowhere to be found in the game, simular to Halo 2, and another game I can't quite remember off the top of my head. Besides the same bad guys being used over and over again and the office crawl, I think it was a good game.

Ugh the end "fight" was godawful and stupid. I would've preferred a stand up fight. Kudos to them for trying something different atleast.

All this idiotic bullshit about who owns what is getting really retarded.
If you think F.E.A.R.'s IP rights are convoluted, you should look at the NOLF series. If a sequel is ever made to that series, it will probably be more changed than F.E.A.R.'s.

Hmm, VU Games is deleting all forum threads relating to a FEAR sequel.
VU Games deleting threads?! What a shock. Its idiot moderators delete anything even remotely critical of the company or products.

PC first console later is always good. Even if you didnt find the game to your liking.

Yeah, once I finally played through the damn game one weekend i actually enjoyed. The ending wasn't unexpected, but presented VERY well. I'd definitely play a sequel to it.

I liked the game, but I found it really repetitive after a while. Still, the AI was great, and the action had a real cinematic flair to it.

well, they did spend a lot of time and money promoting and hyping the fear name so its unlikely they will let it go so easily...

but yeah, i'm sure publishers and developers should have something on paper regarding who owns the intellectual property etc. when they sign the contract to make the game...

kind of reminds me about what happened to football manager and championship manager last year.

All this idiotic bullshit about who owns what is getting really retarded. For fuck's sake, how hard is it to lock up the rights to the whole thing?

More FEAR like gaming = great. As for the name, meh. Who cares what they call it.

Any game franchise that goes with VU publishing is looking for a kick in the nuts.

The Armachon or whatever level was way too long. They should have mixed the levels up a bit.

The only part that got midly boring was about 70% into the game, the offic run-about. Before and after that the game was just top-notch.

The mech busting through walls had to of at least startled some people, I know it surprised (aka scared) me pretty good.

And yes, the ending was worth the 'what the hell are these warping bastards doing!?!' part.

I'm hoping they'll improve upon the fear experience in a 360 version. And hopefully add more to the multiplayer side of the game so that after beating the game it doesn't collect so much dust.

They could have an awesome online game if they would add in different classes of armor like that samurai suit, the mechs, and the stealth suits. Could be a lot of fun if the more heavily armored suits couldn't move or aim as fast but had better firepower, and the stealth suits and less armor, can move faster, but very low powered weapons. Something to keep it fair and fun for all.

The plot really seems to disappear in the middle segment of the game, except for a few shots of the main characters and a few laptops to check out here and there. Once you get to the end though, the game shines and really gets great. The ending is wonderful.
