More on TRIBES Rumors

There's a Q&A on TribalWar.com with Tim Aste getting the lowdown from GarageGames on the flurry of rumors that they are working on a "spiritual successor" to the TRIBES series. Tim clarifies that plans for a GDC tech demo got a little blown out of proportion, and that while it is possible that a game project will result from all this, such talk is premature. The good news comes in word that they intend to eventually freely release the Tech Demo that spurred all this talk of a new TRIBES game publicly, but they are also not closing the door on the possibility that a game will come from all of this:

This is one possibility we are heavily considering at this time. Given the right circumstances and interest in what we put out there this is definitely a path that we could go down. There are a lot of factors which may or may not be obvious that come into play with this sort of thing really. GarageGames has grown significantly over the last two years and can finally begin approaching these sort of projects with a genuine interest of making them a reality, but we do a lot of things different here. Things need to match up right for us to be able to take a new project on no matter what it is.

As an avid T1 player and a post Dynamix insider, I am all for Garage Games taking a swat at Tribes again. Garage games is at least a few of the old "core" gamers.

Got Milk?, Sne/\ker, Cornboy, and Jett and all the other guys that made that game knew what they were doing (Screw Cornboy and his sniping :). They were gamers and not focused on the dollar. Props the old Sofa Kings Crew!

Sign me up if:
1. T1 play, skiing speed and chaingun and all.
2. No Vivendi, Georgeson, Sierra wonks anywhere near the real creativity. (Disk to the face! Bitch.)
3. Much better anticheat, let me repeat that, PREVENT THE CHEAT.
4. Dammit bring back the Voices! Taunting was half the fun.
5. Updated graphics, eyecandy and physics.

I would buy 6 copies and give them to my friends just to play.

That is a neat video! I agree, why not just remake the game as Tribes 1 or 2, 2006?

There is no need to reinvent the wheel here.

Total War Medieval 2 is coming out and I have no beef with that. They are just going to improve on an already great game.

"I think my point was, making a Tribes game that core tribes community will enjoy is not likely to happen"

All I want to see if ever a new Tribes came out, is Tribes gameplay EXACTLY like Tribes offered. With an updated engine.

Not not some Dev Teams or Suits idea of what they THINK they see, or what they FEEL Tribes should be. But Tribes as it was. With just a new uptodate Next Gen engine.

If they can`t do that, I just can`t be bothered to buy their game.

Speaking as a former T1/T2 devver, if anyone can do it right, the Garage Games crew can.

Just don't let Sierra anywhere near it :-)

I think my point was, making a Tribes game that core tribes community will enjoy is not likely to happen

point well taken, but I honestly dont think that would be the case anymore. As long as the right people make the core game on a modern engine. Thats Garage Games.

If GG makes the demo moddable, watch out. The Tribes community will go nuts with it.

If they make a full game, it will probaly be on par with T2, but Im sure they'll make sure the physics and speed will be more than enough to compensate for classic man on man Tribes CTF gameplay. Thats fully understood in the Tribes community. There are two types of players and some spill over either way. Plus GG wouldnt really make another Tribes, but another game like Tribes, unles they buy back the franchise from the grips of Vivendi. (God that would be double orgasmic).

Hey Nefilm thanks for all the great maps! I vote you and Zod, Zodd definite members of the dev team. If they'd have you =).

Maybe what would be needed would be to take a Valve approach to the problem (no, not steam). Make a "Tribes: Source" type game where the original Tribes was redone with a new engine. That's probably the only real chance of breathing new life into the Tribes series

Not all of us are so cynical. Just watching those tech demo videos (which even in that primitive state are beautiful I might add), I believe its entirely plausible that a true successor can be done and done right. Obviously it's a fine line to walk...and if anyone can do it, it's GG.

God I miss tribes.

Was definitely the most fun I have EVER had playing games on my pc... I played T1 a fair amount, and T2 almost every day for 2+ years. And when I wasn't playing, I was making maps. Even had the honor of having 20+ of my maps included with the T2 classic/re-release. Hasn't been a game since T2 that has kept my interest for longer than a few weeks, a month at best. If GG decides to make a full-fledged game from this "tech demo", I will be beating down their doors looking for a job.

Thanks.

Looks like you played the game back when players actually used vehicles and very few people knew what skiing was. That would explain why you felt the game wasn't fast-paced. Of course, the game was at its best during competitive play, where both teams are skilled and everyone knows what they are doing.

You, sir, are 100% correct.
Perhaps I should have noticed the lack of vehicle talk in this thread. They were somewhat common when I played. In fact, there was often a line for them.

I think T:V was an attempt to make a Single Player Tribes game...and I think they succeeded in that. The game was fun with a good story in single player. What other reason would you hire a company that is known for there single player story based games. If you wanted to make a multiplayer only game hire another company to do it.

As for tribes 1&2 being fast paced...if you knew what you were doing both games were INSANELY fast paced. Dangerous Crossing was one of the quickest craziest maps I have EVER played in a 1st person shooter. Some maps like Broadside were made for defensive conflict...with sneakyness and close quarters inside fighting. That is what was great!!

Lastly the capture and hold gameplay was awesome in tribes!! They had underground bases...bases in the air... and bases on the ground all in one map!!!

For those saying Quake Wars isn't gonna be original....you are half right. However NO other game has had the same level of OBJ based maps and Experience system. So a nod for splash dmg being innovative is definetly there.

One last thing...tribes did have a very competitive year...it was released on Xmas EVE at the same time as Baulders Gate 1....I remember this cause I bought both games thinking BG was gonna be the one I played a ton. But tribes was the game that took over for the next year or so! It was AWESOME!

Personally, I liked the SP aspect of T:Vengeance. While half of the SP game was an arena sporting event, the other half was pretty nice. And the story wasn't half bad.

Unfortuntately I never got into the original 2 Tribes so I don't know what I'm missing. So I can't really compare the MP aspect.

If that was your point, then I agree with it completely.

It's basically related to what you said, T:V wasn't a real tribes game. You're right. There are so many hoops they'd need to jump through right now just to make something with a Tribes label on it. I don't think whatever ended up on the shelf would be a real tribes game.

Maybe what would be needed would be to take a Valve approach to the problem (no, not steam). Make a "Tribes: Source" type game where the original Tribes was redone with a new engine. That's probably the only real chance of breathing new life into the Tribes series. I'm not sure what the market for it would be like, but I know there are many people out there that never gave Tribes a shot.

If that was your point, then I agree with it completely. The first Tribes has attained a near-mythical status; one that would be nigh impossible to duplicate in terms of the impact it had. No one is going to be floored the way we were after the first time we tried Tribes.

You're right, T:V isn't what T2 was. Heck, T2 wasn't what T1 was. With consoles being the #1 reason to develop a game, I guarantee you the next iteration of the Tribes series, if it ever is made, will be very different again.

Once again, I tend to agree.

I just watched the tech demo myself, it looks like a very realistic terrain like Tribes and there is obviously someone running in fps mode. Sure, its not Tribes, but it looks a lot like it early on. Again, if anyone ever sat down with the devs at E3 during Tribes 2 development, this was a flashback. All they were showing was the terrain with the guy running. Back then they had fixed the rolling and tearing terrain problem and removed the skiiing and were pretty proud of it. You could easily make some slight changes to the Tribes base gameplay (for example a lot of new players had trouble adjusting to the team aspect and loading gear, weapons, turrets, and understanding ships were not for kamakazie missions) and just call it something else. Doom became Quake, for example. I will bet you that this will be a Tribes style game (jet packs, large environments, vehicles) with a new name.

I love the flames here. Relax buddy. Point is, it is to be a Tribes style game and once again, it has Sierra looking over it and more importantly, Garage Games has some Tribes dev's involved, so dont be fooled for a minute, Tribes will be the inspiration. Those two things together make me leary of looking at it. I still bought SWAT 4 because each game has been a lot of fun, all released by Sierra. I think the problem here is your not an original Tribes fan from back in the dial up days, in which case, your just spewing general thoughts, not really knowing or being part of the history. I saw the Tribes 2 tech demo at E3 years back and the final game was nothing like that, I mean DUH, its a tech demo.

"There is a huge difference between the last Tribes game released by a team totally unrelated to the origonal, and a Tribes game made by Garage Games.

The whole "fool me once" thing has no bearing here what so ever. In fact it irritates me. Cant you freaking read? I mean seriously *DUUUUUUH*. honestly a real "major geek" would be able to figure this out in 2 seconds.

Look at the tech Videos. Even in that ultra pimitive test state its flipping OBVIOUS that that is "Real Tribes" and not that TV unreal engine junk. Look at the movement and skiing and terrain."

this brings back a flood of memories and emotions for me. i was deeply involved in the original tribes game for mapping. I designed and managed a team of mappers that would create custom built maps for anyone who requested it (Goldberg from Mappers Extreme). i also had two of my maps win in the contest that Dynamix held that they released in the community map pack.

i would love to see GG take this game back and restore it to its original wonder. enough of this Vengeance crap. i own UT2k4 and if i wanna play that, i'll load it up.

Oh yee of little faith. You really understand the history fo Tribes eh? You do realize TV isnt even considered worthy of being called Tribes. It was a huge dissapointment and was developed by a good dev company that unfortunately knew hardly anything about Tribes, and they tried to scale the game down and make too many changes. Plus putting it on the Unreal 2 engine was a foolish move. Unreal 2 cant scale for some of the map sizes playable in Tribes and the netcode was horrid. Torques netcode is stellar.

I think my point was, making a Tribes game that core tribes community will enjoy is not likely to happen. You're right, T:V isn't what T2 was. Heck, T2 wasn't what T1 was. With consoles being the #1 reason to develop a game, I guarantee you the next iteration of the Tribes series, if it ever is made, will be very different again. T1 fans will be disappointed it's not like T1. T2 fans will be disappointed that it's not like T2. And even those T:V fans will be disappointed it's not like T:V. The player bases are too splintered, and too few, for it to work anymore.

When I bought T2, I luckily had few problems. I clearly remember the outcry from the community about its numerous bugs and unfavorable comparisons to T1. It was an OK game, but I moved on for the next FPS not long after. Even the so-so MMOG, Planetside, was enough to draw away much of what was left of the Tribes base. After all, Dave G was developing it. By the way, you will at some point be able to play Fodderside for a year, free.

FYI: played PS once? You may be able to again for 30 days: http://planetside.station.sony.com/news_archive.vm?id=67013&section=News&month=current

And all your hopes go down in flames

And yeah, that too. Little faith? Nah, been playing games too long not to know when a games is going to fail / not gonna happen.

btw,

Personally i think T2 kicked the crap out of T1. T2 what a game. I will never forget the fist night of play the day i got it. I was litterally blown away the first time i got into the bomber position on the big gun ship. Flying out over the desert it just felt like you were miles in the air. The whole thing was sureal.

The vehicles, graphics, maps and the enhanced way packs worked etc just raised the bar on the whole experience for me.
