Day of Defeat: Source Free Weekend Underway

As promised (story), the Day of Defeat: Source Free Weekend is now underway. All that's needed to sample the World War II shooter is a Steam account. Word is: "Day of Defeat: Source is the latest version of the WWII online action game from ValveŽ. This weekend, everyone is invited to try DoD: Source for free. Join the ranks as Axis or Allies troops located in Western Europe during the height of the war in 1944."

Isn't that the value of EVERY game?
You obviously need to play some games other than Valve's. No, my statement isn't true of even most games let alone every game. With most FPS games you get at least ten multiplayer maps. And, in the rare cases where that isn't true, you usually get a series of single-player maps to play through. With Day Of Defeat Source you get neither.

I don't recall one game that I like just for the original game.
That's not my point. Almost everyone if not everyone likes at least some user-created content for games. The point is that the game as delivered from the developer should offer a lengthy and complete experience on its own. User-created content is a free bonus not a crutch to make up for a sparce game especially when those users who created the additional content weren't financially compensated for their efforts.

Yes, pay Valve $20 for a shell of a game, and rely on free add-ons from other users to make it playable for more than a few hours. That's one hell of a business model. Too bad the public can't invest in it.

I don't recall one game that I like just for the original game......hmmmmm...... nope.

I have modded everygame (FPS, racing, sim, etc.) I have played in the last 6 years and enjoyed it more and longer than the original. I would think many others would say the same.

Not a bad mod. It does need more maps. I was kicking butt as a machine gunner. Love camping and shooting at friggin soldiers in my paths. I am not going to buy the mod after this weekend free trial ends. The mod needs more maps and stuff.

I will play more later today I hope.

Kinda adds a new wrinkle to steam releases, doesn't it.
There's nothing new about that. A new wrinkle would be if Steam were actually accessible for everyone everytime they wanted to play one of their Steam games especially when a new release is made available.

Day of Defeat: Source Free Weekend?

Dude could a name get any more confusing?! Source Free Weekend? Does that mean Source is Free this weekend? Or they're giving away a free copy of the game this weekend? WTF?

Kinda adds a new wrinkle to steam releases, doesn't it. With every popular new game or event there will probably be a period of time when you can't get access to play any steam based game.

Yay, people get to play DoDS for free, meanwhile I [who have legitimately bought HL Gold] can't even launch any of my games because "Steam servers are too busy"

$20 for Day of Defeat is no bargain unless your only experience with online FPS gaming has been suckling at Valve's teat.

Eh, there's a few criminals that deserve that moniker...

There are now 6 maps in DOD, and more are coming.. Ok, its not that many, but they are QUALITY maps, unfortunatly 5 of them are remakes.. well most MP shooters only have 5 played maps anyway.. it doesnt matter if it says "over 50 maps!" on the box if 45 of them sucks.. Its still fun sometimes, however it feels really deathmatchy for my tastes.. when I first started playing DOD 2.0 I kinda had different hopes for DOD then what it turned into... thankfully the real ww2 game is coming soon

Coming to Steam: Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45

6. Best WWII FPS Feb 10, 2006, 17:44 JoeFaust

DoD: Source is definitely my preferred FPS at this point. I picked up BF2 about a month ago, and didn't like it much after playing DoD: Source. Granted, they have much different gameplay (no vehicles in DoD:S), but the graphics, physics, dmg models are all much better in DoD:S

20.00 to have unlimited amount of gameplay that is never the same?
You play the same four maps enough times and regardless of who you play against, it WILL get repetitive. In addition there are at least several quality FPS games (not to mention dozens of free game demos) that offer unlimited online gameplay for free. $20 for Day of Defeat is no bargain unless your only experience with online FPS gaming has been suckling at Valve's teat.

Wow. They are charging 20 bucks for this? Ok don't get me wrong, it looks nice and I wish they made a single player ww2 game outta the source engine, though this is no way worth 20 bucks. Heck, the original free mod had like what, 12-14 maps? Now this had only 4, I hear they added one or so, and they are charging for basically a graphic overhull. I would definitely not pay 20 for this cause it plays like a very basic multi FPS game.

20.00 to have unlimited amount of gameplay that is never the same?
huh - a skewed idea of a deal I think.

Remeber, go download the non-canned maps.
The original only had 8-10 maps - MAYBE.
The great maps in the original were custom maps.
The cusom maps in this version are better than the original (5-6?) ones.

Even if you put in 20 hours - $1 an hour?

Oh well.
Just seeing it in the HL2 engine and all the really nice layouts on the maps (kicks CS' ASS!) is worth it.
Make sure to check out the maps:
Alterna
Battlecreek (HALO Map)
Kalt (Custom, not the canned one)
Salerno
Argentan

Yeah, $20 and this was released 4 months ago for $20. Steam titles hold their value better than a Toyota.

Speaking of online FPS deals, I think I'm going to give PlanetSide a shot again. Those who have old accounts can log back in to a free 30 day trial (I think the deadline to log in is the end of the month). Plus, some time in the near future they're going to allow a free 1 year trial (cert limited, so you can only specialize in a couple classes or so) of Planetside to stir up some interest again. Now, that's a deal.
