New NVIDIA ForceWare Drivers

New NVIDIA ForceWare version 81.98 Reference Drivers for WinXP are now available (thanks Thomas). These WHQL certified drivers add support for GeForce 7800 GS AGP, offer application compatibility fixes, mixed vendor support for NVIDIA SLI, and more.

25. Real Newer Drivers (WHQL even!) Feb 8, 2006, 12:24 Cortex Reaver

If you go here:

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1309

You can download 83.40-WHQL. They're much better than the 82.12 beta crap I was forced to use with my AGP 6800GS, though still not perfect.

Guru3D also has a 83.60, but they would not work with my kit - I think the require a Dell machine.

Did this add support for the 6800 GS AGP as well? Currently have to use the 82.xx betas...

82.xx is higher than 81.98......

Several older games I reinstalled recently (ie AVP2, Unreal 2) have been crashing constantly, I hope this helps.

I ordered evga's superclocked 7800gs, might even be here by tomarow. I have a 2800XP and from my experience and what I read, this is still a fine cpu for even todays games. (keep in mind too, I am upgrading from a 9600xt. I should expect this $300 investment to bring me a worlds of difference even if I am not getting the full speed the video card is capable of)

Also I am a beliver of buying a good mobo, that pretty much kills any of those combos they sell with pcie video cards today.

Comparativly to pcie video cards, the pcie pulls better becnhmarks, sure, you have faster cpus at the same time too. But in comparison to other agp solutions, the 7800gs hauls ass. You need the overclocked version to edge out the beefy TI 850xt pe, but at the same time you get SM3.0 and all the series 7 enhancements yielding a nicer looking image. That makes the 7800gs way more attractive then ati's agp cards. (I am an ati fan, but when I needed to upgrade my 9600xt, I really made it a point to find a card that would support all the effects of todays and tomarows games to maximise the life of the card. When reading that halflife 2 would probably be the first and last HDR the SM2.0 would see, I made SM3.0 a requirement. That pretty much nixed any chances ati had in the agp realm. :/)

Any opinions on the 7800GS? I wouldn't mind hanging onto my AGP system for awhile yet. But paying more for fewer pipelines (16 as compared to the 7800GT with 20) does not sit too well with me.

I dunno.. I suppose it depends on what your upgrade cycle is like, but given that mobos are generally one of the cheaper components of an upgrade, and that you're almost certainly going to be required to run PCI Express in the future, it seems hard to justify buying AGP if you're just in need of a new video card. If you don't need to buy a new CPU, I'd say you're probably better off sucking up the cost of the new mobo at the same time as a PCI-E vid card.. This also gets you into the land of SLI possibilities, which (correct me if I'm wrong), you don't get with an AGP solution..

..if, on the other hand, your CPU can't be carried over to the new mobo (but is still reasonably capable), then it might make quite a bit of sense to just get the AGP card and hold out on the move to PCI-E for as long as possible. You should be OK until something either won't run on XP (which should be a long time), or specifically requires PCI-E video for some wacky reason (which I can't really see happening outside of maybe DX10?).

Either way, a 7800 card is going to make you happy, although I don't know anything specifically about the performance of the GS.. but I've got a GT and it's freakin' insane so..

You're actually paying more for holding on to dated technology rather than for fewer piplelines.

This is very confusing.

As 82.12 version drivers are on the ftp...but they are dated 12/19/2005. But the release notes for them where updated on the 11th of Jan....whatever.
