Dear Diary

The Bethesda Softworks Newsletter - Issue 01.24.06 is now online, offering a developer's diary for the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Collector's Edition. The diary is actually more of a brochure, offering details on the CE's extra content (thanks Frans). The newsletter also has the advance release of the new documentary teaser trailer. Similarly, The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Preview on IGN recaps details found in The Elder Scrolls Forums - Fan Interview #3.

ok fourpak - that actually does sound pretty damn entertaining

the "trekkies" docu was side-splitting in that regard

and finally, let me join the chorus: BRING ON OBLIVION!! AIEEIEIEIEIE

I'm interested in the DVD documentary, but it depends how detailed it is. If it really shows the process that developers go through when making a game, great, but if it's just a shallow 'Hi my name's Dan and this is, uh, my desk and stuff', I'll pass
A REAL documentary on what devs go thru would be highly entertaining but no company has the nerve to put in the shots of guys screaming at each other in frustration during crunch time, or sleeping under their desks in clothes that haven't been washed in a month, or living for weeks on warm Mtn Dew and cold pizza crusts hunched over an in-circuit emulator at 4:00 in the morning single stepping thru machine code trying to find a bug, just to meet some arbitrary deadline.

19. Err okay, back on topic now Jan 26, 2006, 00:52 Creston

So what all is going to be in the CE as opposed to the normal one? I've fully jumped onboard the DVD bandwagon, so if the CE is a DVD and the normal version is CD, then CE it is (even though I really shouldn't be supporting bastards who are trying to get extra money for the convenience of having to burn fewer discs...)

But like someone said below, if it's just a bunch of boring documentaries, I'll pass.

I actually watched about 20 minutes of the FEAR commentary, until I realised they were probably going to play through the whole damn GAME while commentating on it. And some of the commentary was pretty cool, and some of it was pretty insightful, but come on. At least give me some indication of how long I'm going to be sitting here. And ofcourse, the stupid player that comes with it won't let you fast forward, so no watching in chunks either.

Anyways, definitely looking forward to Oblivion. I hope it'll play on a Radeon X600, that way I can play it at work too.

If you're really into the history and lore of Tamriel, and like to read as much about it as possible, then the Collector's Edition will be a good buy, due to the "Pocket Guide to the Empire" (mentioned at the end of that article).

It will be the most comprehensive guide to the world of the Elder Scrolls you can get without working at Bethesda.

wow - a metal box annoys you??

The metal box for PDZ CE sure does. I have several 360 games atm and I've noticed that the metal box is more difficult to open and deal with. And when I'm not playing 360 I want to stand my games up on end all organized like and the weight of this box keeps causing them to fall over so now it just sits on it's side grinning like it won the struggle against me. "Haha, you can't stand me upright and keep everything organized cause I keep falling over!"

DAMN YOU METAL BOX, DAMN YOU TO HELL!!! In hind sight I'd prefer the standard plastic box just because it would make the games look more uniform on the shelf. And that little extra game profile graphics were pathetic that came with the "bonus" disc.

Jesus space captain, what the hell crawled up your arse in the recent weeks? Before you had one-a-topic sarcastic comments that might have been construed as being funny. Now it seems like you have a rod permanently shoved up your arsed and the pain it causes you is being expressed by your supposedly sarcastic and funny posts.

Shit it's you who needs to get a life, you need to find a woman who can actually please you in some way shape or form and stop being so goddamed moody and actually put some form of coherant argument/content in your posts rather than attempting personal attacks on people. Get a life and go outside and see sunshine for the first time in 15 years.

As that's the end of my rant, i'm looking forward to Oblivion, and i hope the changes they've made from Morrowind will make it bloody decent. I'm not too happy about the merging/removing of certain weapon classes, but it can be forgiven if they make the combat system work well. That and the fact i can now ride horses! Yay!

you actually want to watch a documentary about the making of a video game?? you need to get out more, bro

or perhaps you can watch the one about how master craftsmen turn pure innuendo into anal dildos... ribbed! (for your personal pleasure)... that sounds like it might be right up your alley

Since it apparently only focuses on the preparations for E3, I'm worried it will be the latter.

10. Ghosts? Jan 25, 2006, 16:46 Cheese

Speaking of which im having a ball with the HOMMV Beta, man what a blast and the new feature is ghosts lol. Speaking of Oblivion I have one word, Radient A.I. Is it fixed? will it work properly? From what i have seen of it it could revolutionize existing A.I.

I didnt like morrowind too much, but since they are making a whole new world to explore I am eager to try it agian. good luck Tom Howard and staff on what might be the best RPG of 2006. cant wait for it.

As long as the regular edition is a DVD, I'll go with that. The bonus stuff doesn't look like anything that will add to the existing game content. Maybe I'll take the time to read the manual for the story.

For a game like this it's probably worth it for the collector's edition. I got the Special Edition DVD for F.E.A.R. and I'm so glad I did with all the extra content added that was integral to the story.

Nah, everytime I buy a CE edition I end up regretting it, the extra stuff they give you is fun for the first day but after that it just sits in the box. PDZ CE is my latest regret, good game but the extra 10$ didn't get me anything I care about. Metal box is cool but becomes annoying very fast.

Are you getting the collector's edition? It kind of looks like it might be nifty to pick up.
