Maryland's Violent Gaming Bills

Game Politics (thanks GameSpot) reports that not one, but two violent gaming bills will be read before the Maryland House Judiciary Committee next week. Under consideration will be House Bill 54:
FOR the purpose of prohibiting a person from selling, offering to sell, displaying for the purpose of sale, or renting to a minor a video or computer game that has been given a "For Adults Only" rating by a certain rating system; establishing criminal penalties for a violation of this Act; providing for a certain affirmative defense to a charge of a violation of this Act; defining certain terms; and generally relating to selling or renting video and computer games to minors.
And House Bill 75:
FOR the purpose of prohibiting the sale or rental of violent video games to minors; providing a certain exception to the prohibition; requiring certain violent video games to be labeled in a certain manner; providing that a person that violates this Act is subject to a certain fine; providing for certain defenses; authorizing the reporting and prosecution of a violation of this Act; defining certain terms; making the provisions of this Act severable; and generally relating to the sale and rental of violent video games to minors.

The thing about these bills is that the people proposing them, don't actually care if they go through or not. They're just proposing them for the PR so people sone that politician so-and-so is for controlling violent games, which is something that will come in handy when so-and-so is running for a better office next time around.

That's why there's so many stupid laws on the books. The politician don't actually care about the results, just the appearance.
