I would really like to see a video of the drive blowing up and blowing the front off The Mythbusters did this awhile back... I'm sure you could find a video online if you felt like it.
It had some rather nasty destruction in it too, since they used a ballistics gel torso to simulate damage from flying CD shards.

But I do not allow errant drivers to infect my system. My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > View - Hidden Devices > Non PnP Drives
Better stop using anything then, because SafeDisc and SecuROM both have 'errant drivers' hidden there as well... And just like StarForce, they were installed without your permission...
ARGH... RIP OUT YOUR CD DRIVE... THE WORLD IS ABOUT TO END!!!

WOW - ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS to fly to Russia?!?! Are they planning for their protection to be broken? Why not offer six gumballs and a can of coke.
Starforce games suck, and I refuse to buy anything using the protection. Shame, really, because it is used in some nice games. But I do not allow errant drivers to infect my system.

There are posts about dvd burner drives that totally cease to work, ones that cease to work until a firmware upgrade, ones that cease to work until xp is reinstalled, etc. Well funny you should say that... Before my CD explosion incident which ruined the CDRW drive, my cdrw drive had been acting up. At one point i could burn cds with WMP, but not with Nero or any other writing software, and then the drive just stopped working completely as an RW device. This continued for a while until i updated the firmware (granted i did sorta mess up as i updated the RW drive with my DVD drives firmware, but i quickly sorted that out) and even then it was very unstable in it's use.
Its interesting to hear that other people had the same problems i did.

Actually there were a couple quite intruiging posts on egosoft x3 tech help page by an official starforce rep. Apparently they dont know much about slowing cds down to check for the copy protection, they start at the max speed, and they actually have it wait something like 15 mins to slow down. Some faster cd/dvd drives apparently screw the check up because they are too fast. A number of people were succeeding by using nero drive speed to cut down the speed of the drive. (rather than waiting the 15 mins for game to fallback on a slower speed then start). Rather oddly the starforce rep had been saying there's no way to slow drives, until someone found out the nero thing. So there are theories that because the starforce drivers interfear with the cd rom stuff, it spins it too fast sometimes, and hence the explosions (yours is not the first report of a cd explosion). It turns out that 52x for cds is just under the rotation at which cds will explode. In addition, an unbalanced cd may be more sensitive.
As for link to damage posts, just browse the official star force forum. Again, there's no way to tell if they are all legit, but I've seen posts similar elsewhere like on egosoft (x3 publisher). There are posts about dvd burner drives that totally cease to work, ones that cease to work until a firmware upgrade, ones that cease to work until xp is reinstalled, etc.

Is there a link to info about what kind of damage SF can allegedly do to a DVD drive? I got Lock On Gold a few months back and my Plextor 712A has really been acting up probably for about that long and through a reformat without reinstalling it - it never even crossed my mind that the SF crap could have been the issue...

Bah. I've only ever had 1 problem with Starforce that i can actually trace it to, and 1 problem, i can't really fault Starforce with, but i'd like to anyway.
First major problem was with the first Trackmania. Compu worked fine at a AMD 2800+ chip, then 2 or 3 days after Trackmania waas installed, BOOM! the chip refuses to work at the bought 2800+ and only works stable at a 1.2ghz. That i know was due to starforce. How it managed to do that i dont know, and if it didnt, then well it's one hell of a co-inkidink.
Second one was where a CD blew up/Shattered/disintegrated in my tray when it was being read. Unfunnily enough it was my Windows XP cd. The explosion was so much it actually blew the front cover of the drive off. It was exciting
I can't prove either of them to the people now because i have since switch cpu/motherboards and a couple other things, and i dont want to risk screwing up my PC again.

X3 Euro Edition and the first game I've ever had with Starforce. While I admit I was surprised by the little pop up that detects the disk and 15 seconds it takes to start up overall I've not had any problems with it.

By setting up this contest with such a paltry prize and high travel expenses and barriers, it can simply declare vistory when no one steps forward to take this challenge Agreed, the whole thing seems stupid. Apart from anything else, if SF screws up my CD drive am I supposed to buy a new one, ship my computer to Russia and hope my new drive gets srews up too?! With people watching it? What a load of crap. As much as I'd like $1000, it'd be easier to pump gas or wait tables for the required amount of time

If you can be the first to reproduce this situation in our office, we will be happy to award you with $1000.00 US, cover your trip to Moscow and pay 2 days’ lodging. And what if you get there and can't reproduce it or the Starforce developers decide that your definition of "malfunction" and theirs are not the same? This is nothing but a desperate attempt by Starforce to cover up problems with its software and dupe skeptical publishers into using it. By setting up this contest with such a paltry prize, high travel expenses and barriers, and a short deadline for entry, the company can simply declare that no problems exist when no one steps forward to take this challenge or if someone takes it and fails to meet its definition of "malfunction."
The fact that Midway recently removed the Starforce protection from Area 51 in an update after problems with it demonstrates that using Starforce won't help a mediocre game sell any better and that it costs publishers more in increased technical support than it generates in additional sales.

I didn't try the suffering sequel/expansion, I just knew it was another one. Semantics As I said, "some" liked gangland. POP WW was a decent game in and of itself, but compared to the other two (SoT and T2T) it was the worst of the bunch. It had less immersiveness, a storyline that wasn't as good, etc. When I played SoT it really felt like I was playing like the "where do you want to continue the story from next time." They brought that back in the last game, which was a wise decision.

1. PoP:WW wasn't crap. 2. Suffering: Ties That Bind is a sequel, not an expansion. 3. Gangland was terrible.

I buy my games but I do use nocds, I use over 10 programs aday it is absurd to constantly be forced to change cds just to start a program again.
Yeah I dont see this as an accurate debate there are 2 groups, pirates (whom sell copied software) and sharing (mostly by younger (everywhere) or poorer (in second (possibly thrid world) gamers.
There is no way in hell software compaines could have a single clue about sharers, maybe prirates not much of a clue thou. They completly falseafied loss numbers for tax writeoffs, hell mathmaticans have gotten involved in this and showed it was the increase in game prices form $30 US to the rise of up to $50 US to $60 US now that caused the decline in sales.
The only way they would know is to someway to know who, what and how many which they dont, unless they are the ones stealing their own software.
This whole arguement falls apart when you look at successful games, how is games like Half-Life are successfull they are not immune to these 2 variables.
I agree most games are in bad shape, maybe potienally good but rushed by publishers whom dont want to wait the 3 to 4 years to make an execllent game.
MS did nothing but exacerbate this by bribling and strong arming all the PC developers into making snotbox only games, forcing 2 years development times treating developers like slaves.
Just like the record industry killing their own industry, it is the developers and the gamers that suffer, friggn jerkoffs!
