The Postal Man Returneth

The Running With Scissors Newsletter (thanks Unrealik) announces development of Postal 3: Catharsis, a third installment in the postal series, though only that working title and the PC and Xbox 360 as target platforms are being revealed at this time:
It has been formally announced that the next milestone in the POSTAL saga is already in development. The game, under the working title, POSTAL 3: Catharsis and is headed directly down the throat of the XBox 360 and the PC. More details on what happens to a complex, multi-dimensional individual like The Dude after he has razed Paradise and left it a (radioactive) parking lot.

Let the questions and suggestions pour forth.

You've forgotten the Action Quake 2 HandCannon ! KABANG !
Anyway, I rather liked Postal 2. It might not be the best FPS ever, but it was more than worthwhile to play, in my opinion of course.

Seriously, what where the serious showstopper bugs in Postal 2?? like every FPS for the last 10 years I'm sure it had some issues, but I really cant remember anything specific.. except the loadtimes, they where too long, but then again the levels where pretty big

As for "poor gameplay" , Postal is one of the more open-ended FPS's I've ever seen.. there were lots of cool combos with setting stuff on fire, shoveling, booting in doors, head-football(that was just pure class) and lots more, also the randomly appearing marching bands.. man, a game that lets you set a marching band on fire!, it was like I'd died and come to heaven.

Also, I'm a sucker for good shotguns, and IIRC Postal 2's shotty was among the top 10* Ive seen in a game..

*Best game shotguns ever:
1.DOOM1, single barrel
1.DOOM2, DB.
3.Action-Halflife single barrel
4.Halflife 1 and 2.
5 Serious Sam DB
6.Postal 2

Postal series is a fun series.
It isn't anything new and breakthrough, but it is fun open end humor. It is a nice break from the other FPS games.

I will probably play the third one, and laugh like a little school girl again.

Oh they were there. Did you buy the game later or soon after it came out? Because I imagine they patched later releases of it.

I bought the game shortly after its release (I had nothing else to play and it seemed fun in a stupid way) and I ran into no bugs other than the long load times (which were halved in the first and I believe only patch.) Yes, the game was by no means AAA material, but I didn't pay much for it and thought it was fun for what it was.

Honestly, Postal 2 was rather weak. From the awkward weapons (visually and aurally), horrific load times, lobotomized AI, strange lack of damage areas (headshots have only been around for how long?), weak mishmash of a storyline, many many misfiring jokes...it felt like an FPS from 8-10 years in the past quickly ported to a modern engine. Considering that in the same year we also had SoF2, Elite Force 2, Wolf ET, Tron 2.0, Raven Shield, Call of Duty, and Vice City/Halo's PC ports all for competition in the shooter genre, the lack of many standard features for the time, and anything unique to distinguish it, gave the game a really dated feel.

If the people at Running With Scissors would take an honest look around at the state of the gaming industry and what advancements have been made and are willing to at least take inspiration from them, I think they'd have a much more playable game. The offensive aspects are all that will be brought up by anti-gamer types, but gamers will by and large ignore it if the gameplay isn't up to par and the visuals are at least decent (hint: good art direction can cover for many technical and budget shortcomings)

its because of crap like this that parents, politicians and lawyers think all gamers are a bunch of retards. Isn't it time the low life idiots who make these games went out of business? I cant believe the same industry that makes civilisation and Sim City also churns out crap like this.

The actual gameplay itself was sorta weak and shoddy. But just running around in it like a sandbox was strangely entertaining to me.

it lacked direction. it seemed to try a little too hard to be open ended like GTA but it just didn't have the massive amount of stuff to do like that game did. More importantly the weapons, while seemingly fun on paper, were boring to use. Maybe if they implement some kind of extensive physics this time and/or spend a little more time tweaking weapon feedback it'll be more entertaining.

What makes me chuckle is Desi and his crew like to think that the negativity is centered around peoples' shock and outrage but in reality it's mainly the poor gameplay that most are complaining about.

As others have said no one really hated Postal 2 for its subject matter, its that the gameplay sucked hard. Make the combat mildly entertaining this time RWS and you might turn Postal into a fun franchise again.

I found both Postal games to be extremely offensive. Not because of the subject matter but because of just how poorly designed the games were. Terrible level design, retarded AI, lackluster combat... just about everything that is important in an FPS was butchered in Postal 2. Postal 1 wasn't an FPS, but it was just about as crappy as its successor.

To be fair, I did find urinating on people to be somewhat amusing... for all of one minute.

I beta tested Postal 1 (I'm sure many of us here did.)

What I remember best was the cheat codes. Why? Because I'd just mash the keyboard. Guaranteed within 5-10 seconds god mode would be on. I don't know what the cheat codes were, but I guess they didn't really exist. At least for the beta. Just mash the keys randomly for a few seconds and BAM god mode, or BAM all weapons. It was great.

I wasn't offended by postal 2, I just thought it sucked. Hard.

If I remember right everything took like 5 headshots to kill, and unless pissing on people is your thing it wasn't very fun.

I read on the RWS messageboard that Postal 3 supposedly has you starting off as a kid, and depending on what sort of decisions you make during the game, you'll grow up to be a Presidential candidate, a serial killer, or something in-between.

Just a rumor of course.

And for the record, I liked Postal 2.

I actually enjoyed Postal 2. It was a great sandbox game, and was actually different than the standard cookie cutter FPS that has become the norm. I'm curious to hear more about this next installment, and see how they approach it.

Something about golfing heads into a nearby cactus with my trusty shovel just set the game apart from all others.

See I played Postal 2 a lot... And I don't remember any of this bug shit people always heap on it. Yeah the load times were probably longer than they should be but, oh well. I still think it was fun to play. Once again just because you don't like the subject matter doesn't make it a bad game. I hate sports games, I never play them and when I do I constantly think to myself "what is the point of this"... Does that make them bad games, no. I just don't enjoy them, I am not going to give a sports game a 2/10 because it's a sports game.
