"Terrorism" is control through fear. That's what it means. And most of the people using terrorism in Columbia are working for the government--just as they are in this country.

We are artificially elevating the power of the state in this region of the world--tipping the balance of power toward government control. The policy we have promoted and help enforce in Columbia weakens the farmer and gives power to the criminal element--which is a typical result of prohibition.

Of course, that's all way too complicated for us here in Magical Faery Land where every problem can be solved through Jesus Christ and bullets.

They also lived with the IRA for years...granted, compararing the IRA to Al Qaeda may be a stretch, but the IRA didn't exactly fuck around, either.

On the other hand, Al-Queda has never directly threatened the government, whereas the IRA bombed the tory party conference at Brighton, attacked Downing Street with mortars and assassinated Lord Mountbatton. It's all about using terror for power over the populace, after all........something we can see governments are just as good at.

"It's so irritating how everyone jumps on the terrorist bandwagon... it's the replacement to communism"

Yea terroism is just a 'bandwagon' or 'boogeyman'.
Damn you are clueless.

A good list of the last 30 years is here(you can ignore the column itself if Ann frightens you):

Oh yea, communists are just misunderstood right? Thats why they have killed over 100 million in the 20th century? More than all the wars in that time combined.

Keep on with that fantasyland you inhabit...

Realy? Huh, I know the subway bombing that occured a few months ago was pretty bad. I also imagine you guys have your radical groups too. The right wing extremist types (sometimes called militias) that always look scary but rarely do anything.

Now they're talking about x-raying people going onto trains... pathetic.

I did a year in England when I was a sophomore. The surveillance everywhere took a little getting used to, but I never felt unsafe walking the streets at night. I think it's pretty sad we live in a society where we can't be trusted or can't trust others.

I could see US intelligence reporting weapons of mass destruction being developed in the jungle

Hell, Venezuela is as good a place as any. At least with them, Mr. GW Bush will have an excuse to liberate yet another oil producing country for the American and liquidate a paranoid, oppinionated South American leader.

I fear China will be our next enemy,

Yeah, with their great economy (though I wonder when the bottom will eventually fall out, because Japan and South Korea aren't communist governments and hit pretty hard economic recessions as certain shit finally came to light) and huge military, some analysts say they're going to expand their sphere of influence one day. Who knows if it'll be Taiwan or Korea, or elsewhere. Or if it even occurs at all.

It's so irritating how everyone jumps on the terrorist bandwagon... it's the replacement to communism. I find it too convenient that we always have to have an enemy, whether it be the Russians, the Arabs or the Vietnamese - the UK has had only one suicide bombing, same as the US (admittedly on a far larger scale) and yet the western world seems to live in constant fear, with politicians passing ever more ludicrous legislation. Now they're talking about x-raying people going onto trains... pathetic.

I worry what will happen when we get bored of terrorists/arabs as an enemy... I fear China will be our next enemy, with the government and media hyping up every minute detail.

Oh wait now I remember communists and drug lords are now considered terrorists.

FARC is a communist insurgent movement but it's a communist insurgency that employs terrorism to further it's goals. If the use of terrorism isn't enough to call someone a terrorist, perhaps you could illuminate us as to what is necessary?

Well, both Arabs and Latin Americans have slightly darker skin, speak a non-english language and live in hot places; I can see how they got confused.

Since when does Columbia have terrorists? Oh wait now I remember communists and drug lords are now considered terrorists. If we lump em under 1 big label "Terrorist" its not as confusing when I kill em!
