Quake II Java

Bytonic Software offers a Java 3D game engine that can run Quake II (thanks noiseunit9 and Slashdot). Word is: "Jake2 is a Java 3D game engine. It is a port of the GPL’d Quake2 game engine from id Software. To use the Jake2 engine you need either the data files from the original game or from the demo version that is available for download from ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com."

Of course, of such assessments to be made, there needs to be some feedback from the users.

I emailed them and told them it was awesome, and also asked if they had any plans to port Quake to it...

Why run this over the original ? A lot of answers might come to mind :
- This should be able to run on any Java/OpenGL enabled plateform. That means a lot of operating systems (Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Linux, Windows...) and of computer architectures (PowerPC, SPARC, x86...).
- Games using the Java/OpenGL bindings are quite rare, mainly because of performance concerns. This kind of development makes it easier where the performance is lagging, and what needs to improve. Of course, of such assessments to be made, there needs to be some feedback from the users.

Nope it runs fine. I enjoyed kicking it up to 1600x1200 recently.

Actually if you really want some nice eye candy try out Quake2Evolved. Basically brings all the eye candy from Q3A to Q2:

I guess it's also easier to program for and modify for those who know Java.

Could has sworn someone posted that here...

I type "timedemo demo2" and hit enter but nothing happens...

Runs @ at at least 8x6, 10x7, and 12x10...but it seems to reset to 8x6 every time you restart it...IE you have to up the rez every time you run it.

edit: Other than that, it's fucking BADASS.

edit again: ah...

This is pretty neat! I'm getting over 250 FPS with this. And I think it even sounds better than the original game.
