Steam Plans

This Steam Update (thanks Shacknews) offers a bit on Half-Life 2 MODs (I wish people would stop capitalizing "mod"), mentions the upcoming Red Orchestra release via Steam (along with a screenshot), and outlines plans for future updates:

We're currently targeting Wednesday, November 30th as the release date for the updated version of de_nuke for Counter-Strike: Source, and Argentan for Day of Defeat: Source. Nuke will be the first Counter-Strike: Source map we've released that includes HDR lighting, and we think the community will like the way it looks. Argentan is the first in a series of new levels we are producing for Day of Defeat: Source.

but it felt like it was having some trouble fitting into the engine and, excluding graphics, it felt quite a few steps behind DoD

Current version is 3.3, and it has a new movement system, feels more slick now than ever, but yes, they've done lots of hacking just to make it fit into UT, and theyve gone beyond what your'e supposed to be able to mod in the engine, now that they have the full engine, all that wont be a problem anymore..

And yes, compared to DOD:source the graphics arent quite there, but IMHO , RO actually has better looking weapon models etc, and the new levels looks better than what you can expect on the UT engine..

But ofcourse, Source is a newer engine, and HDR looks awesome..

EDIT , i mis-read your post, but IMO I think its ahead of DOD in most departments.. but it takes some getting used to the different gameplay.. There are also some levels that arent that good, or atleast have a very steep learning curve, so new players end up just walking for too long only to get shot from some hidden sniper, or blown up by the nades that are very hard to see coming.. hopefully RO:O will make it easier to get into the game, because once you do, the gameplay is awesome..

How is R.O. these days? I played some version, one I want to say was called a "final" reelase, but...it had some issues. It was not a bad game, but it felt like it was having some trouble fitting into the engine and, excluding graphics, it felt quite a few steps behind DoD.

The new "full" game does look interesting so I am curious to see how that one turns out, though...
I just hope they realize a retail game needs more than four %@#$ maps.
Having long ago given away my UT CE,
Ray

he claimed Shadow Ops: Red Mercury and Men of Valor were decent.

Yep Veggie has really horrible taste in games. Rainbow Six 3 and Spinter Cell series is crap? Magic Battlegrounds was a good game too, no longevity, but a fun game.

Yeah, I also don't like the engine but how can you say Chaos Theory was crap? That was like game of the year. Also SWAT 4 was pretty good.

That just gives you some view of how rediculous his opinions are. Another good example is that while he insulted games like SC:CT and Swat 4 as crap, he claimed Shadow Ops: Red Mercury and Men of Valor were decent. Veggie obviously hasn't got a clue when it comes to FPS games.

When Picasso painted a masterpiece did people criticize his paintbrush? Did anyone discuss at length the canvas he used?

UT looks pretty sometimes, but i dont like the feal of the engine, so much effort on UT engine is waste of time if u ask me.Makes a good DM game but add to much to it and wow does it suck.

Some of the games released on the Unreal-engine 2.5, My point is, its not the UT "deathmatch-engine" they are using, basically RO:O could be VERY different from UT, just like most of the above mentioned games..

Red Orchestra is fantastic. If you didn't know ahead of time, you wouldn't be able to tell it was a mod.

I know I'm not going to buy it, suffering from a total overload of WW2 games myself, but I wish them the best of luck with their venture.

Ok my mistake, i thought they were porting it to Source, jeez.....still using UT engine. Another reason not to buy. I played the original releases of RO, though well done for the engine,UT looks pretty sometimes, but i dont like the feal of the engine, so much effort on UT engine is waste of time if u ask me.Makes a good DM game but add to much to it and wow does it suck.

NEway, I assume I'm not the only one that thinks Red Orchestra looks like a pile of shit? If it's free then that's one thing but I really hope they don't intend to charge for that (not that I would consider it anyway).

I would say you are among very few that dont think it's going to be a good game. Im assuming you havent played the mod for UT2k4, therefore you have no clue of what you speak anyways. And it is RETAIL...so yes its going to cost money. This is a standalone game and a new game from the mod.

Mod development has been a bit slow and there has been a right load of crap but there are already a few that are looking amazing... Black Mesa: Source and Fortress Forever are definitely the top of the list. They're certainly taking their time but the levels are looking amazing - they've just got to keep working and finish off the gameplay aspects and they should reignite the mod scene, as no game has come close to offering the quality of modifications as the original Half-Life.

NEway, I assume I'm not the only one that thinks Red Orchestra looks like a pile of shit? If it's free then that's one thing but I really hope they don't intend to charge for that (not that I would consider it anyway).

Yeah -you're right. I'm just waiting to see what mods actually get released. It seems one out of every 20 actually ever see the light of day.

Patience is not one of my stronger points.

a new alternate campaign in City 17, etc.
http://eqxp.com/rogue2/

I was looking for a REAL source update for HL1,
http://www.blackmesasource.com/

There are a ton of high quality mods in the works, things take time. And many of them are getting very close to an initial release. Half Life mod scene really wan't into full tilt until 2 or 3 years after the release, Half Life 2 has been out a year a and a week. Be patient.

I've gotta say, I'm a bit dissappointed with the number of mods (not MODS) that have been made using source so far.

I was looking for a REAL source update for HL1, a new alternate campaign in City 17, etc.

My respect for modders is unending, but I can't help but wonder where all the mods are.

I would try to give it a go myself, but I think the results would be disastrous, so I'll leave the modding to the pro's.

Lets see, pay for R.O? uuuum no......What happened to all the free mods everyone was gonna make with the source code that was gona be soo user and mod friendly and easy to use that we should be swamped with source mods? All im seeing is a purchase to play half done, buggy, awfull multiplayer experience so far with source not to mention they gakked everything over 32 players. R.O. my thoughts is keep it free or it will die. Garranteed.

what Dagok said, without all the hatin'

Want source mods? well try Hidden:Source http://www.hidden-source.com , for a more total conversion ,these things take time, so nothing big is out yet, but check out Insurgency, from some of the people behind Red Orchestra http://www.insurgencymod.net , this mod seems to be awesome.

Never ceases to amaze how people can't read, or just don't bother to read. They won the right use the Unreal engine to release a retail game. This is the UNREAL engine, not Source. Furthermore this is not the same mod, it is a NEW game with new features, new weapons, new vehicles, new maps, etc. Learn to read before you spew your bullshit.

I don't see it dying anytime soon. The RO mod is so much better than many retail games I've had the displeasure of purchasing. Having access now to the full engine will make it so much better. I'll glady fork over some cash to play it and give them some revenue to start RO on the U3 engine.
