Out of the Blue

As the football season roars into its second half, there is disturbing news from the baseball front. Word is the GMs are considering implementing some sort of instant replay rule... I personally hate this idea. I like replays in the more techie sport of football, but not in the more organic sport of baseball. If they are looking to bite the bullet and take out the variables of human error from the grand old game, I think a much more worthwhile breakthrough would be to judge balls and strikes electronically. Umps very rarely get calls wrong on the base paths and such, and I feel these errors are part of the game. Watching umps enforce their personal opinion of the strike zone, however, is maddening. Bad enough that it seems no two of them share the same opinion about what constitutes a strike, but there are also too many cases of the same ump calling the same pitch differently during the same game.

I am not so happy about some of our CA proposition votes. No wish to mix up the power situation? No expansion of state healthcare?

Otherwise...are we now making a law that states, if you believe in ID, you can not believe in a single "god?"

Also, as their science is no longer limited to the natural explanations of phenomena, I hope they account for mysticism, magic, vampires, the sun as an almighty being, and so forth.
Idiots.
Edit: As for the anti-gay marriages (Wow, of all things to work on, people take a proactive stance on this???,) how about we remove marriage - make it just some funny word on the side that holds no value - and replace it with a generic relationship substitute that any two people can get. For some reason, I suspect the anti-gary marriage peeps still would not support that. I wonder why...

Wondering so many religious texts ignore dinosaurs,
Ray

It's just too bad he wasn't there when Nordberg went off a few years later.

And there's something about that which has always bothered me: Since Ludwig and his mind control ray were trampled to death outside the stadium, what made Nordberg snap?

Was it perhaps the challenge of donning an ill-fitting glove that caused another one of his wacky 'mishaps'?

like in that crazy game a few years back where Angels Rightfielder Reggie Jackson thought he had to kill Enrico Pallazzo.

Man, that was a close call. Thank goodness for Lt. Drebin. It's just too bad he wasn't there when Nordberg went off a few years later.

The age old argument that "Errors are a part of the game, and this is how we did it back in 1904," is bullshit. We have the technology to correct these errors, so why aren't we using it? A game should be settled by the play on the field, not by the ump's perception of the play on the field.

Totally agree. I think they would have used instant replay in 1904 if they had it.

On the other hand..

nobody has any problem when a manager comes out of the dugout to bitch and yap at an ump for 10 minutes?

That's 1/2 the reason everyone is watching in the first place!

They're sitting there secretly hoping that a manager will walk out onto the field and a massive brawl will erupt between both teams -- like in that crazy game a few years back where Angels Rightfielder Reggie Jackson thought he had to kill Enrico Pallazzo.

The reason umps judge strikes differently from batter to batter is because they set up on different sides of the catcher. It astonishes me that nobody has ever even mentioned this, or that umps don't realise this themselves. If an ump sets up to the left of the catcher, when a lefty is batting, he won't see inside pitches to that batter, because the catcher is in the way. And various other scenarios.
And then, ofcourse, there is the height of the strikezone. The rules specifically state "above the knee and below the shoulder."
That below the shoulder part is usually interpreted as below the batter's elbows, but even so, some umps really call wacky shit.

Personally, especially after the truly HORRIBLE officiating we had to endure the last postseason, I would vote in favor of bringing in replay.

The age old argument that "Errors are a part of the game, and this is how we did it back in 1904," is bullshit. We have the technology to correct these errors, so why aren't we using it? A game should be settled by the play on the field, not by the ump's perception of the play on the field.

The downside to replay is that it lengthens games, probably by quite a bit. Yet nobody has any problem when a manager comes out of the dugout to bitch and yap at an ump for 10 minutes?
In the time that the manager is bitching and yapping, we could also have an ump look at a monitor for a replay.

Last GM's meeting, the vote between GMs was deadlocked at 15 a piece. I think the GMs will vote more in favor this year, and then it will go to the owners.

I expect replay to be in baseball within 3 to 5 years.

The camera's my dad's old one, the original IXUS. I could use Windows Explore, except the camera driver is also horribly broken in some way, causing windows to bluescreen...

EDIT: No, you're right. Why do I use ZoomBrowser? Stupid windows refuses to crash when I try it now.

EDIT again:

Why install Zoombrowser at all? Just download the pics in Windows Explorer. Or do you need it installed for some other reason?

I just hated trying to work with that program....

In order for ZoomBrowser EX 5.5 to be installed, ZoomBrowser EX 2 or 3 must already be installed on the target computer.

Newsflash Canon. The camera's been paid for already. Why do you require me to install the horribly broken ver. 2 (Really, horribly broken. SonicStage style broken...) to let me intall the new version? Is it some sort of rite of passage? 'Only someone really dedicated deserves our new, less horribly broken software. Will you prove worthy, or will the numerous bugs and oversights consume your eternal soul?' Couldn't you do something more traditional, like require me to survive a week alone in the jungle, or arrange for me to fight to the death with another customer or something?

...

Erm, I think it's dumb, anyway

Oh I hope you realise I was just raggin' on ya back in the GUN thread -- no need to explain or justify.
It is Quake IV after all... We'll all need to play it and see for ourselves some day

No worries, there was no way in hell I was going to pay full price. The 48 hour sale just happened to have it at the same time I bought FEAR. Otherwise, I would be Quake 4-less. I think one would be hard pressed to find the Q4 DVD for $34.90 or less in the near future. (6 months)
