What was the capacity of the first ipod?
Well, the very first one was 5GB for $399, but the very first Archos was only 6GB, so I still don't think we're talking about the same time period here. And I can't easily find a price on that 6 GB Archos.
The first 20GB iPod was 2nd generation. No clue what they sold for; I think $399 though. When I bought Heather's 4th gen 20GB it was $299. All the other current 20GB players were in that price range as well. The iPod was a bit more expensive than some of the competition, but the new (at that time) click wheel interface was (and still is IMO) far better than everything else out there.
battery replacment $50.00
You can get a battery replaced by Apple for $59 (used to be $99, which was highway robbery). You can also do it yourself or have 3rd party companies do it -- probably about the same price for having them do it, but they put in higher capacity batteries (I've seen claims of up to 40% more power, which would mean around 18 hours runtime for my iPod). Varies by generation obviously -- one site claims >20 hours on 1st/2nd gen iPods.
As for the warranty -- the battery is covered for the duration of your warranty. Once you're out of warranty, whether or not you violate the warranty by opening it up is rather irrelevant.
