51. Re: iPod owners? Oct 27, 2005, 15:12 Zathrus

Out of interest, why is that a no-no?

If the OS is in the middle of writing to disk then you can end up with a corrupt file system.

Modern FS's (like NTFS) have protections against this, but they only go so far. And if the FS wasn't shut down cleanly then the OS will generally have to go through extra work (basically a chkdsk (or fsck in *nix)) during bootup to make sure everything is sane.

Obviously cutting the power during a chkdsk is really, really not recommended.

In olden days the actual HD heads needed to be moved to a safe spot prior to powering down, or else you ran the risk of the heads plowing into the platters if you moved the drive. That was solved 20 years ago with auto-parking heads though.

Oh, and for completeness -- if your HD implements a cache on writing then you can be well and truely fucked if you power down at the wrong time. In a worst case scenario you could have the OS thinking that everything was fine with the FS, but it wasn't because the HD didn't actually commit all the data. Boom, corrupt file system. I don't know of any HD's that implement a write-back cache though... at least not consumer grade ones.

Out of interest, why is that a no-no? Because everyone has to do it now and then, when there's a crash or something. If it can cope with it in those situations, or a power cut, why not the whole time?

I know you shouldn't, but I don't know why.

Thinking we should all be on instant-on computers by now anyway

That works fine.

No... he's referring to the switch that is (or should be) on the back of your power supply. The hard switch that physically disconnects the rails -- which you should always use before doing anything like changing components (or unplug the computer, but keeping it plugged in gives you a convienent ground).

If you flip that switch to power your PC on and off it doesn't make a lick of difference what software settings you use.

On your power supply. And good luck keeping your PC in good working order using that method of shut down...

That works fine.

Start, Settings, Control Panel, Power Options, Advanced tab.

"When I press the power button on my computer _____" (pick your option).

Whoever invented this press and hold crap should win a award for coming up with such a dumb idea.

So you're completely against electronics being able to power themselves up, down, or enter various levels of power saving?

Personally I like my Shuffle, though if I was buying a new one I'd get a Nano. It's perfect for running, gym etc, and its small enough to fit in pockets. And the battery life is fine.

But my 4G ipod just stopped working one day. I got a replacement, which was just busted from the start. Its battery life was crap, it was as if you couldn't turn it off. It would then need to be reset each time I wanted to use it (and charged) and was just a nightmare. So far I haven't got around to getting it replaced because I don't really use it. But I should, before the annual warranty runs out.

There should be a mechanical master power switch.

There is. On your power supply. And good luck keeping your PC in good working order using that method of shut down...

I want a dedicated on/off switch, not this "hold down on the wheel until the ipod feels like turning itself off"...

I think this should be the case for ALL electronic gear- especially PCs.

There should be a mechanical master power switch. CLUNK its on. CLUNK now its off. Whoever invented this press and hold crap should win a award for coming up with such a dumb idea.

Zathrus an iPod supporter? Shit. The world throws you a new curve every day.

Personaly, I like my iPod mini. No, it's really not as good as some other MP3 players, but it's just damn cool. That and it's modular as hell. No real special equipment needed, just plug it in to recharge and load music. Then again, I got one for me and my lady friend for dirt cheap in Akihabara, so I guess I can't complain anyway.

That Archos thing is pretty dang nifty looking, actually. They're definitely similar, but at the same time quite different..

(should I admit that, although I am getting one, I really just threw the Epson out there 'cause I'm a dick? nah. best not)

The Epson's main function in life is to pull masses of digital photographs directly off of your flash-memory cards in the field, so it's got built in CFII and SD slots on it in addition to the USB2 port.

Browsing photos on the thing is a real pleasure, and the screen is good enough to judge image-quality in the field with a reasonable degree of confience that you're seeing fairly accurate colour and a decent approximation of gamut, etc.

It's also got some very very nicely thought-out histogram displays, support for a number of RAW formats (meaning you can view your RAW captures in the field -- HUGE boon to photographers), and appears to be reasonably well sealed against the elements as well. It's pretty hard to beat from a photographer's perspective. It ain't tiny, but I've owned walkmen that were bulkier, so I would certainly call it portable.

The other stuff is just gravy for me, TBH.. video playback is a nice thing that I'm not dying for, but might use on occasion. I also have a crapload of AACs, so I'm always on the lookout for something that'll play those.. Never been interested in WMA, personally. It's a bit smaller and lighter than the Archos, and I'd have to assume the battery life would be better simply because the screen is so much smaller (wish Archos listed the power consumption so I could know for sure though).

So that's my love affair with the Epson explained..

But that said, if I was a video guy I'd be cursing your name for putting that Archos link in front of me. Looks really sweet

Not really similar. The GP2X is first and foremost in most people's minds (who know about it) a handheld linux-based videogame emulator with built in support for just about any audio or video codec. It's a fraction of the price of that Epson - which is a nice bit of kit but more than I'd want to be lugging around with me.

You can drop any size of avi file (xvid, divx..) and it'll scale it automatically to fit the screen so there's no need to reencode, as you would on a video ipod for instance.

And when you run out of things to watch or listen to you can play Metal Slug or Quake on it.

EDIT: ah. Comparing the Archos and the Epson - the Archos has a 7" screen. That's neat and all but it's not my idea of portable.

The other thing to remember about the ipod is that because it's so popular there'll be a lot of clever stuff coming out geared for it. There's a reason why the majority of us use Windows PCs despite there being alternatives, whether or not those alternatives have some better points. Sometimes a hat is just a hat and not a fashion statement.

Isn't the real problem with the ipod that it's so ubiquitous. It would be the same as a particular hat being fashionable and 70% of hat wearers went out and bought that hat. It may well be a damn fine hat but christ where's the individuality?

I remember when boomboxes were the closest we had to portable music and the idea was to be seen with something different, and preferably bigger - how things change.

EDIT: and I want one of these:

http://www.liksang.com/info.php?category=126&products_id=7728

Yeah, it's flash-based but 1GB would be plenty for me.

I'm buying one of these:

http://tinyurl.com/bej32

Just can't decide between that 80GB model or the $200 cheaper 40GB one.

It's a behemoth next to the new iPods (I think it's about the size of two G1 iPods stacked), but they're friggin' sweet little machines. The interface is superb.

Find me an ipod that does the same thing as the Archos GMINI 402 (20GB)?

The 30GB iPod is $299 list, or $270 if you know where to look. It has a 2.5" color screen, weighs 4.8 oz, plays video, pictures, etc., and has a 20 hour battery life.

Quick comparison:
Apple has a longer (twice as long) battery life, a slightly larger (2.5" vs 2.2") screen, a higher res screen (320x240 vs 220x176), 50% more disk space, is lighter (4.8 oz vs 6.64 oz), and is slightly thinner (0.43" vs 0.7"). Video can also be in Quicktime format.

Archos is slightly thinner (2.3" vs 2.4"), has line-in and microphone, includes an AC charger (bad Apple, bad!), includes the AV connector (Apple requires a dock or adapter cable), and can handle larger resolution video. It can do WMV9 video.

Depending on your needs one may be better than the other.

Find me an ipod that does the same thing as the Archos GMINI 402 (20GB)? [edit. whoops. had bg not gb]
http://www.archos.com/products/prw_500708_specs.html

The latest iPod does all the things you mentioned. (except it requires an adaptor for digital photo transfer from camera)
But it has a bigger screen with twice as many pixels.
It's smaller and lighter.
Has a bigger hard drive (30 GB)
It costs $300
