17. Re: Where did refresh rate override go? Oct 21, 2005, 08:55 gigi

Answer to myself:

Simply open the Windows Registry Editor and under the
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak] key
create a new DWORD called NvCplDisableRefreshRatePage and assign it a
value of 0.

why the dumb programmers forgot that??? ahhh I lost 2 hours today

Is the 6600gt that much worse than the 6800gt?
I know it has alot less pipes but darn...
I'm using a 6800gt, P-IV 3GHz and 2GB RAM.
FEAR is smooth (9% 0-25FPS, 51% 25-40 FPS, 40% 40+ FPS) in 1280x960 with everything maxed out except soft shadows disabled and 2xAA.
I wonder if they will patch in 1280x1024 any time soon (probably not, when I think back at NOLF2).

If you turn Texture Size down to Medium, the game will run a hell of a lot smoother. I'm pretty sure Max Texture Size is intended for 512mb vid cards. I played 2/3 of the game on Max Texture Size, but eventually got tired of the occasional hitching that occurs, especially when starting a new map.

I usually try to push 1280x1024 or 1280x960. I was able to do this with Quake 4. FEAR on the other hand I pushed it down to 1024x768. I won't play any lower than that. I don't want to kill the shadows either. I think it will really subtract from the game. Also no AA makes the entire game look like crap. I'm going to go down from 4x to 2x the next time I go in. I should probably lower some of the settings it auto detected to max to medium. Most are though.

Lately I've been thinking of setting up a second computer so I can get some experience using Linux and mess around with servers. I was going to buy a cheap one but maybe I will start upgrading the parts of what I already have. After my new promotion money starts coming in maybe I will look into getting a 7800 GT and a PCI-E motherboard. ~620 canadian

P.S. Where the hell is ASE support for FEAR!?! I hate in game browsers.

I sooooooooooooo wanted to say that was not true...when it is.

The weird thing is that, if I move the camera around while the hub area is loading, the game pauses for half a second and then all the textures revert to looking normal. It is definitely in that loading "crush" period, though; if I just stay still in the hub area while everything is loading, the textures will not change back when I do move the camera around. Likewise, I have been unable to get this change to happen in the quest (non-hub) areas.

F.E.A.R. looks fine though.
F.E.A.R. >>>>>>>>> Guild Wars.

There are 6600s with 256mb ram also. I was about to get one of those but chose the 6800 non GT/X instead. It runs GW just fine for me. FEAR (demo) makes it struggle, however it still looks great and runs smooth enough for me. I dont remember what settings I used though.

Edit: You cannot do 1024x768 with everything set to medium and disabling shadows?

Disable shadows in FEAR? Thats not acceptable in these scary-type games.. the shadows add to the experiance.

Let me play the game and then I might consider MP.

On my system, I am running it at high settings and 1152x864. This actually runs better than the demo did and, though not blowing myself away, I have to be in that 40FPS - 60FPS range. The main stuff was just disabling the bob, not enabling soft shadows, turning off mouse smoothing (though that's more for my own personal quirks,) and then finding a good combination of AF and resoltuion (currently 4x AF.)

I hate to say it, but the single biggest killer is your card. A 6800gt is nearly, esentially, twice the card of your 6600gt. The amount of memory and pipelines are double and F.E.A.R. eats that stuff up like mad.

But...what resolution do you normally play at? I would imagine 800x600 for F.E.A.R., but I would hope you could push 1024x768 with some tweaks. No AA, no AF, disable shadows, and do not put anything higher than medium. Otherwise...low is always an option and you can tinker around with forcing DX8 shaders or whatever that double shader option thingie is.

You do have to make some sacrifices, but you should still be able to play the game. You cannot do 1024x768 with everything set to medium and disabling shadows? What have you tried?
You know you are still evil for being Canadian, right?
Still sorting out my control scheme,
Ray

I am unhappy to report that these still contain the terrain graphical issue with Guild Wars that 81.84 beta had.

Really, you have non-smooth gameplay with a 6600 and an Athlon 64? This game must be pretty vid card dependent. I only have an Athlon XP 2800, but I have a BFG 6800 GT card, and FEAR runs great for me with settings on high. (1.5 gb of RAM too...)

Hows about you return that 6600 and get a real 6800 GT.
