The reviewer seems to have captured the essence of Smart's game. There are intermittent updates to things but no enhancement of the game. It's like he looks at his checkbook, says "oh hell, I'm broke again" and then re-releases the same game he has made previously with a graphics update and small changes. There is nothing about UC:AWA that sets it apart from Universal Combat... nothing relevant to the gameplay anyway. If he'd release any of these games with a TRULY functional multiplayer and a FPS element that wasn't horrific, I would consider a follow-up purchase. As I see it, he's charging more for less with UC:AWA. Don't even get me started on the whorish nature of selling the keycards and manuals to the poor masses suckered for the third/fourth/fifth time.

do please keep in mind that 58% for PCgamer is the equivilent to 12% for any other review. 95% of their reviews fall into the 70-90% range, so if you don't make it into that range...it's a ridiculously terrible game.

Typical PCGamer... Tear the game a new one and then...It scored 58% If he keeps getting above average scores, then he'll keep making games... WHEN WILL PEOPLE LEARN!

It scored 58% Dude, a 58% on the 7-9 scale is like a -2. That's harsh.

Here's some quotes from the half page mini review, PC Gamer, December 2005, page 96.
It'd be easy to laugh away Universal Combat: A World Apart, ... After all, there's no real game here at all
The integrated FPS game is so horrible, it can barely shoot itself in the foot.
lifeless, vacant bits of real estate with zero tourism value
Of course, nothing's particularly well done.
It scored 58% |
