Activision, id, and Raven announce that Quake 4 is now available in the U.S.:
THE WAR BEGINS QUAKE 4 PC DEPLOYED TO STORES NATIONWIDE
Santa Monica, CA – October 18, 2005 – The Global Defense Force has been given
the green light to invade the Strogg home planet as id Software™ and Activision,
Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today that QUAKE 4™ for the PC has shipped. The
long-awaited sequel to QUAKE II®, QUAKE 4 enlists gamers in the role of Matthew
Kane, a member of the legendary Rhino Squad, to penetrate deep into the heart of
the Strogg war machine and engage in a series of heroic missions to destroy the
barbaric alien race. QUAKE 4 for the PC is available at retail outlets
nationwide for a suggested retail price of $49.99. Additionally, fans can
purchase the QUAKE 4 Special DVD Edition for a suggested retail price of $59.99,
which includes QUAKE II, the QUAKE II expansion packs, and exclusive
behind-the-scenes content. Both versions carry an “M” (Mature) rating by the
ESRB.
“Fans can now buy QUAKE 4 and jump right into the epic battle between mankind
and the Strogg,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. “The single-player
campaign has the excitement and feel of a blockbuster action movie, complimented
by an addicting multiplayer component featuring all the speed and excitement of
QUAKE III Arena®.”
Developed by Raven Software and executive produced by id Software, QUAKE 4
begins only moments after the events of QUAKE II, with the Earth’s fleet
launching a massive offensive to the planet Stroggos. As Matthew Kane, gamers
invade the alien stronghold, fighting alone, along side other Marines, and in
mechanized walkers and hover tanks as they encounter the Strogg and their
disturbing amalgamations of man and machine. Built on id Software’s
revolutionary DOOM 3® technology, QUAKE 4 also features fast-paced multiplayer
competition modeled after the speed, style, and feel of QUAKE III Arena®.

Agreed! I'm still laying in stores for the long wait on the demo train, so the more real hands-on info we can get about this one, the better!
(and on that note: Thanks, Hump!) I've made several "impressions" posts about the game so far, if you're curious.

The repetitive levels of FEAR have me nervous. I'll find out soon if the AI makes up for it.
Q4 is so far off my radar it isn't funny. Going back through the Q2 mission packs would be fun, just like replaying Q2 a few months back was (2.99 at Gamestop!).
AVP was insanely better than AVP2. One of the most frightening games I've ever played (as a marine.) One of the most amusing as an alien. I say we forget it let us play as the Predator, though. The original did lighting so much better than even Doom 3.

Thanks for becoming the Voice of the Forum, genius.
Oh, I think that one belongs to you. Rather handily.
From now on, we will be sure to run all our topics of discussion by you first, to make sure they carry the Silent Sorrow stamp of approval. OK?
Why would you have to do that? I was merely voicing an opinion. Though not as grindingly often as you, of course.
Btw, your complaining over what other people post on here annoys me. So how are you going to deal with that?
Recognizing you for the Internet nerd you are will be about the extent of my action.
Done posting as though you have no life yet?

Don't get me wrong, FEAR is a perfectly enjoyable game, however it is far from great - the level design is definitely tedious (and forgettable), it is very repetitive (something that Half-Life 2 managed to avoid well), the graphics are unimpressive (especially for the performance required - it completely slaughters my X800XL) The graphics are "unimpressive"? What game is impressive in your eyes? Also, it tasks your X800XL? I have a X800Pro which is a lower tier card and the game gives me a solid 50-60 FPS with the settings "high" (not "highest").
I'll agree the game has some shortcomings but the visuals aren't one of them.

I have it.
I'm playing it. (SP so far, MP not yet)
It's fun.
Not terribly original, but the weapons feel good.
But it's fun. A LOT better than Doom 3.

Seeing as how F.E.A.R. has SOME coolness to it, I`d be ok to allow Monolith another kick at the AvP licence can. NO! AVP (by Rebellion) was an amazing game (one of my all time favourites) but AVP2 (by Monolith) was utter shit - they lost everything about the original that made it good... all the animations/models were off and it looked/played worse than the original game (which had very good graphics for the time).
Don't get me wrong, FEAR is a perfectly enjoyable game, however it is far from great - the level design is definitely tedious (and forgettable), it is very repetitive (something that Half-Life 2 managed to avoid well), the graphics are unimpressive (especially for the performance required - it completely slaughters my X800XL) and the AI seems to consist of "jump through window" and "jump over rail" (canned movements).
Monolith have already have a stab at the AVP licence and failed... if it is to be remade (hopefully it will, but I can't imagine there is much demand for it) then it should be given to a fresh company.

The sights, sounds, maps, weapons of MP looks EXACTLY the same. The same tick tick sound when you hit someone, the same death noises, the same weapons, everything! Please someone tell me otherwise! Maps are for the most part verbatim Q3, tick sound is different, weapons are either identical or similar, and player movement/physics are very much Q3-like as well. Any preview of Q4 in the past six months will tell you the same thing though, so I'm not sure why this is such a surprise: they liked what Q3 was, so they kept the formula.
The singleplayer looks exactly like Doom 3. In fact, the Strogg and levels look straight outta Doom 3! Again, someone tell me otherwise! Looks like it, yes, but the "feel" is different. I can't exactly put my finger on it but it's not as slow, the objective-based gameplay (blow up the big gun, find your commanding officer, etc.) makes a lot more sense than DOOM3 ever did. It feels livlier and goes at a much brisker (?) pace.

Can you go one fucking post without sucking some Unreal Engine dick? Are these guys paying you or something?

Well, as someone who thoroughly enjoyed DOOM3 for what it was, I can say that Quake 4 is a must buy for me, seeing as how it moves the awesome graphics out of the corridors and onto the battlefield. As soon as I can buy it after the 30 or so other titles that have shipped recently that I want, anyway...

Update |
Oct 18, 2005, 20:03 |
Hump |
|
|
The game just crashed after about 2 hours of play so this is as good a time as any for a brief update:
F.E.A.R.>Serious-Sam2>Quake4>Quake2>Bet-on-Soldier>A day at work. So far anyway.
TheGood: Kind of has a Call of Duty-meets-Doom feel as you pick up squad mates along the way and get into some heated firefights. Some of your squad will specialize in "Tech" in which he can repair your armor (BoS has a much better implementation though) and a "Medic" who obviously heals you. Only gained 4 weapons so far...the pistol, MG, Shottie and 'nade launcher. All are very well implemented and all are useful. The pistol is energy based like the original game (2) and holding down the trigger charges it up giving you a pretty powerful shot. The MG is especially well done. The feedback, sound and damage is nice. Secondary mode is a short range zoom where it becomes semi-auto but more accurate and slightly more powerful. Shottie has a nice feedback. 'Nade launcher has a dangerous splash damage radius which one needs to be careful of. All weapons are supposed to be upgradeable as you go on though I haven't had the opportunity presented to me yet.
The Meh: The dialogue. Ravens trademark wooden voice actors and bland writers are still in full effect. These guys practically invented the modern day shooter so you'd think they'd take critiques of games past and hire some hollywood caliber writers but noooo. Graphically the game looks good but after playing FEAR which has smoother performance and far superior visual polish it looks rough. It's a bit more colorful than Doom3 but not by much. Still the trademark iD Gotho-industrial rusted look remains and it gets old very fast. The AI is serviceable but they won't knock your socks off. I haven't tried MP yet so no comment on that.
Thats about so far.

It seems some guys on another forum are complaning that their Kaspersky Anti-Virus program detects Quake4.exe as a "Net-Worm.Win32.Mytob.bi" virus. That can't be good, right?

I went and grabbed a DVD player and Lebowski CE after work, Q4 and FEAR was on the shelf at Walmart.

I am confused.
Are we bitching about the game, lack of a demo or are we just bitching about bitching? I wanna know because this seems like so much fun!
Err..Anyway. I will try it. The Doom3 engine is a powerhouse and truth is the current generation hardware can just now truly let it shine. It will look good, maybe it will be fun. But it will get my money…eventually when I have time to play!
