Gold - UFO: Aftershock

Cenega announces that UFO: Aftershock is gold, and that the counter-UFO strategy sequel is due in stores on October 21:

UFO: Aftershock is one of the major strategy and tactical game releases this year. Now, after almost two years of development of this unique game by ALTAR Interactive, we are proud to announce that UFO: Aftershock has reached the Gold Master stage today, 3rd October 2005, with the press getting their hands on the Gold Master review version the same day. The game will officially release on Friday 21st October, 2005.

UFO: Aftershock follows directly from one of the endings of the first title, where the player agrees to hand over the Earth to the Alien scientists, who are trying to change the planet into a giant living organism. The Council of Earth and their followers take refuge on an orbiting satellite prepared for them by the aliens, but not all the survivors of the original invasion were relocated. The game starts many years later in their orbital home, with no sign of the aliens and a failing life support system – the player must find out what happened to the Earth and to those who were left behind on its surface, preparing for all manner of surprises along the way.

UFO: Aftershock is a mixture of squad based tactical action and global strategy. The player controls the actions of elite ground troops, alongside the running and construction of an intricate network of interlinking bases from which to operate and expand the tactical maneuvers needed to succeed.

Main features:

    • Global strategy intertwined with tactical missions
    • Strategic resource and base management
    • Advanced tactical SAS (Simultaneous Action System) and RPG system
    • Encounters occur inside and outside structures, with a broad range of terrains and multi-level buildings
    • Amazing technologies and items to be researched and developed
    • All-new system of leveling up and training your troops
    • Fearsome new enemies and powerful allies
    • Diplomacy – an important strategic element
    • Strong storyline
    • Destroyable environment

Thanks for the info, Slaughter. I will pre-order soon from the UK or an importer state-side... it appears. You should have plenty of time to play the media or retail release and write up your review for us long before I get a copy here in California.

I just got this e-mail from Cenega and as you have stated no US/North America distributor as yet.

Hi Jack,

Thank you for your interest in UFO: Aftershock. The 21s October is a worlwide release date. Unfortunately we do not have a contract signed with a distributor in North America, so there will be no official UFO: Aftershock distributor in the territory at least for a few following weeks.
Although the game should be available through online stores inthe US too, I suggest you pre-order from UK to make sure you get your copy soon.

Best regards

Thanks for the reply, Martin. You can count on me to get a pre-order in very soon.

I just hope it doesn't take a month to ship here. Last game I ordered from a smaller UK internet retailer took four weeks to arrive. That was the S2 Gold Edition. And then it arrived open with the manual missing.

I like most turn-based games and I am looking forward to playing Aftershock.

Hi Paranoid :). How are you doing?

As for the release date, Cenega still haven't managed to get a US publisher/distributor for UFO: Aftershock. Hopefully they'll get one soon, but it's not easy. Most US publishers ask "What is it? What genre does it belong to?". Well, it's not easy to place Aftershock in a specific genre, and the US publishers fear everything they can't call RTS, FPS and so on.

If you want real, current Gollop Brothers fun you should head over to www.lasersquadnemesis.com. It's a gollop developed email pvp version of Lasersquad and it kicks serious arse.

I still think that the Gollop bros should get the license and port the original X-Com to the nintendo DS. I mean, come on. It'd be perfect for it, and you could add a little more variety into it in terms of graphics and such.

I too am really hoping that this one is better than the last. I like Aftermath until the aliens got the rocket launchers and the game got to be f-ing impossible.

Yo, Slaughter... I knew if there was a post about UFO or anything closely related to X-Com you would be found here.

I was reading your Aftershock preview the other day and reinstalled Aftermath. I just picked up where I had left off since I got bored and moved onto another game way back when.

I was ready to pre-order UFO:Aftershock from the UK or a state-side importer when I popped onto Blue's to see whats shacking... glad I did.

But I am still wondering if this is a EU/UK release date or world-wide? As of yesterday nobody, not even the importers has Aftershock listed.

From what I have read this may be what the hardcore fans are looking for. I know I enjoyed Aftermath in stages three times now... though I have yet to finish it. It just didn't have enough variety and detail in most cases and gets old after a few weeks of play.

I have hope (enough to buy it anyway) for Aftershock. Looking forward to it and having fun again with Aftermath at the moment.

God, I am pulling for this one. I want to play a modern day X-com so bad, I think I'll marry whomever succeeds in making one!

Well, if my wife doesn't mind, anyway.

From what I've seen so far, this could be a good game. But I still remember how the last UFO game from Cenega was a major disapointment for me.
So, this time I'm waiting for the "extended" demo. I don't have that much money to waste (again).

PLEASE BE GOOD!!!

i don't care how many times it's been said before, i want it to be good. i loved the old rebelstar, laser squad, chaos, lords of chaos, x-com games (gollop games for short) and i long for a new one that's good. if there's one with multiplayer and it's also good i'll be a happy bunny for a long time.

MMO X-Com could be interesting... IF (huge if) it's done right. One set of players could be aliens, the others could be humans. Aliens could have to attack certain places for various effects such as upgrading their technology, weakening X-Com (i.e. attacking their supply centers), harvesting innocent human npcs (muwahaha), or drawing x-com away from somewhere so the aliens can hit somewhere else hard.

I could go on and on but
a) i'd bore you
2) i doubt it's going to happen no matter how hard i wish unless
III) it's like matrix online; it's made but it sucks.

You say that now Creston, but in 2 days you're gonna be dodging low flying cow crap!

While I did enjoy the days of DOS gaming, I am so happy we are beyond it. It was freakin brain surgery just to get the right combination of memory, sound drivers, cdrom drivers, mouse drivers all on the right floppy to boot the computer with. And people bitch about copy protection these days. Damn it must be rough.

4 colors, using the pc speaker, no 3d, having to actually type in words, *sigh* god I miss Sierra/Origin/Lucasarts.

Not to mention that TFTD was also insanely tough. You had some weapons that only worked underwater and enemies that were also highly damage resistant, like lobster men. The psionic stuff was brutal. Also, remember the cruise ship maps? Holy god, they had like 8 levels and you had to use the same team in every single one. A lot of the time I would get to the last level with only 1 or 2 marines. Now that's a freaking challenge.

Lol that was where the fun was. I was totally in awe at how massive and well crafted and detailed the cruise ships were. Of course, with a map of that size and so many units, it was not uncommon for my poor 486sx 33Mhz to chug for 5-10 mins during the alien's movement turn. :-D

The mention of lobstermen really brings back memories. I remember sacraficing 3 marines just to stun one lobster. Then using my last barely alive marine to stuff it in backpack and run back to the ship. Only way I could get one for interrogation, and interrogate him I did!
