Return of The Romero

A thread on the ROME.RO GameTalk Forums (thanks Mike Martinez and GameSpot) discusses a recent print article on John Romero's storied career. At one point the developer checks in and reveals he has co-founded a new studio:

But, hey, Daikatana's old, old news now. Like, over 5 years ago. And the fact that everyone remembers that particular game instead of the dozens of other games I've made just shows how negatively slanted the media is - negativity sells.

<evil>When news of my new game somehow gets out, i think everyone will be a bit shocked.</evil>

For the record, i'm co-founder of a new game company in the bay area and am much better off in many ways than i was at Midway. Much happier now.

21. Ion Storm Sep 21, 2005, 12:10 amygdala

Did anyone read "Masters of Doom", the book that talked about the nacent days if id Software? It was really interesting, and it talked some about the whole Ion Storm debacle. Simply put, it was a management nightmare. Romero had no experience managing a project of that size, and they spent money like it was going out of style on a game that could never live up to the hype. Pretty depressing, really.

But I'm a positive thinking guy, I think that somewhere in Romero's head is another good game, and if he gets with a good team, it could happen. (I'm not holding my breath, though.)

Concerning Daikatana, A father will always love his son, even if he is a murderer. In this case, murdered pixels. Why didn't he just move on and license the next-gen engine from id and create another FPS? He's bound to get it right sometime right?

It's not the press that killed Daikatana. It was the pathetic gameplay.

That's not really what he said.

In the long run, though, it was a bad marketing campaign and a lackluster game. Had the dropped the entire first act (robo-frogs FTW!) and had it come out on time, this would have been the missing link between, say, Quake and Half-Life.

The ideas were good, but the implementation was not. Even for all the issues with the game, how many actually played it, much less beat it? Again, that first act was horrendous, but it was ok after that point.

And even I have to think he has more than paid his dues for the marketing campaign. On top of that, he did do some stellar pre-Daikatana work and is generally held as a nice guy...
Personally, I care more about the new game than bashing Romero.
Curious to see what he does, but past bashing t3h Romero,
Ray

> Like I said, the guy isn't news anymore.

But that's just it. His biggest mistake is that he keeps trying to make news by talking too much about what he's working on and trying to hype it up. I'm not going to hold Daikatana against him but he should just shut the hell up, get his game to like beta at least, and then SHOW people what he's working on instead of blabbing about it. He needs to learn the expression, "Let your rocket do the talk'n!"

Or maybe more was spent on marketing "that particular game" than every other game he's made?

For all the negativity there was about Daikatana, I didn't think it was all that terrible. I had a lot of fun with the multiplayer demo. I also had fun with the first level or two of coop, but then we got to a point where the game always crashed, and so couldn't get any further. Okay, I guess that part is terrible. Oh well.

Writing him off for the rest of his life because daikatana sucked just doesnt make sense

It wasn't so much that the game sucked that people have written him off. It was because of the constant hype that spewed forth from his little ivory tower, the fact that the game sucked so bad it LITERALLY MADE PEOPLES' EYEBALLS BLEED, and yet he STILL defends the game to this very day, rather than just owning up and saying "Hey, you know what, you guys are right. It stank."
Oh, and the fact that he pretty much single handedly managed to destroy Ion Storm Dallas, which is a pretty decent accomplishment considering they had about fifty million dollars worth of funding.

Finally, he hasn't made ANYTHING worthwhile since the days of Quake. At least Will Wright still makes games, and decent ones at that. What's John Romero done in the last ten years, besides ruin a company, makes us his bitch, marry a mail order bride and shift workplaces four (?) times in the last three or so years?

Like I said, the guy isn't news anymore.

In todays trolling session, Assley Putz will claim Daikatana was the best game ever made...and it's facial animation was far, far superior to HL2.

Assley Putz!

Assley Putz!

Assley Putz!"

I'm sad to say I missed how he became 'Assley'.... But, on the other hand.... before I'd even opened this thread, I half expected him in here saying something along those lines. I suppose on this occasion, he might even use the argument that no speach animations at all in Daikatana helped keep the player inside of an 'it's a game' mindset and not one of 'dem damn murder simulators like HL2;P

To be fair #8, "shocked" isn't usually associated to being a good reaction, so I believe we will be shocked because it'll be something out of left field or really stupid; both of which point to Daikatana 2, but that would just be brain dead stupid.

hey its not osama bin laden, its john romero. sure daikatana was crap, but every game desigenr knocks out some duds now and then. you telling me that EVERYTHING that will wright made was superb?
This guy could probably retire a happy man on profits from the old days, but hes back doing what he loves which is making games. Writing him off for the rest of his life because daikatana sucked just doesnt make sense. He can be a bit of a dick, but hes clearly passionate about games, in the face of a severe beating. you have to give him credit for that no?

Prolly Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Commander Keen and such.

I'm not sure how he figures he's made DOZENS of games, unless he's counting things like scrabble and Mastermind that he programmed way back when or so.

No idiot, it because you were promising us all you were going to make us "Your Bitch". Do you remember that maybe? That full page add showing your shriveled carcass and the 40 year out of style hairdo?
So the fact that everyone still rags you over daikatana is because of your own bloated sense of how good you are, when in fact the game stank like high fucking hell.

And then, ofcourse, his next sentence is :

<evil>When news of my new game somehow gets out, i think everyone will be a bit shocked.</evil>

It's good to see you've learned nothing and are still the same pompous ass. I can't wait for your next add.

FFS, why is this guy still counted as news?? His last decent work was Quake, which is now 70000 years old.

Edit : whats his new game called? "Mail-order Bride Tycoon"??

At some point a person does more harm than good. Romero's colossal ego and silly obsession with EVIL, BAD, SCARY stuff make him everyone's bitch.

But yeah, episode 1 of Doom was good.

So does Positivity. Funny how negativity is selling so much more in Romeros case.
