Gold - F.E.A.R.

VU Games announces F.E.A.R., is gold, saying Monolith's upcoming first-person shooter will be released worldwide on October 18:
LOS ANGELES, CA – (September 16th, 2005) – The countdown to one of the biggest PC game launches this Fall has officially begun, as Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) today announced the October 18th global street date for F.E.A.R. ™ (First Encounter Assault Recon) from Sierra Entertainment. Additionally, VU Games unveiled plans to release an all-new F.E.A.R. multi-player demo in late September. The multi-player demo will follow on the heels of the hugely successful single-player demo that has reached more than 1.5 million downloads since its release in August, making it one of the most popular game demo downloads in history.

“As evidenced by the popularity of the single-player demo and the early critical praise from game reviewers, F.E.A.R. has already become the must-have game to own this Fall,” said Philip W. O’Neil, Chief Operating Officer and President, North America for VU Games. “Delivering a global street date of October 18, 2005 will ensure that the game simultaneously hits retail shelves around the world on the same day and will enable hundreds of thousands of gamers to experience the thrill of F.E.A.R. together.”

----I wasn't impressed by F.E.A.R. I'll definitely be skipping it. Hell I've skipped so many now (HL2, BF2, UT2K4, MoHA, SC:Chaos Theory, DOOM3, Bloodlines, etc), in a few years I can get them all for the price of one and finally get 30+ hours of gaming for $50.----

clearly not an FPS fan then, so why bother posting in a comment section about another fps game?

Just curious, and i don't really post much on this forum, i lurk a lot though ...

If you play none of those games, not that they're all the end all beat all of video games, but it was really the "etc" after listing all those games that made me ask what games you DO play ? It seems that so many elitist people on this board can't be "bothered" to play these games for this reason or that... I guess I just don't understand. They're all FUN GAMES and isn't that why we game to have fun ? blues is such a snobby group of gamers that I've ever really come across and I been lurking here for at least 5-6 years. nothing but love, but f*ck people...

Oh yeah FAKK 2. I believe it took longer to install than to actually play through.

I guess I'm failing to see why everyone is up in arms over the 10 hour length. 10 hours is the standard and has been a long time, why start bitching about it now?

Well, it's not as if I've just started bitching about it NOW, I've been bitching about this since the days of Elite Farce and that Ritual game with the chick that only lasted six hours (can't remember the name right now). And I WILL keep bitching about it, and continue shifting my money to games that offer more playtime than that. *shrug*

Have there been a few exceptions, sure; but if you refuse to buy 10 hour or less shooters, you must be only buying 1 maybe 2 shooters a year.

Correct.

I dunno, since I had more fun fighting the A.I. in the short demo then I did in all of HL2, I’ll probably pick it up. And you cannot compare its length to Doom III anyone who says they beat it to the end without cheating past certain places is a liar.

Actually I am suprised no one has mentioned call of duty, I blew through that in less than 6 hours, much of which felt like it was spent reloading on that russian anti-tank rifle building defense level.

FPS games always take longer for me to finish than what the average person takes. Its not that I'm new to FPS games or not good (I've been playing them since Wolf3D and Doom), but rather that I take my time going through them. If there is a good part in a game, I usually play that part over.. and/or play the whole game again later.

I take more time by sneaking around in most FPSs too. When I want to run around quickly shooting everywhere I play Serious Sam-type games. I know some of you are the same, but I must replay certain areas more often since it takes me longer to complete.

I'm guessing the 10 hour comment was either a guess or someone who rushed through the game. I think the comment from the Vivendi guy is more realistic. I know I spent more time on the demo than people were saying.. even on my second time through.

(although I can't for the life of me remember anything more specific than fighting something sorta whitish in a reddish arena-type level ;).

If you remember in the beginning, you can go to the ship's bar and talk to the bartender, which she says something like "you're on duty, commander." In the end, doesn't matter which ending you take, but the final cinematic shows you asking for another drink, the girl saying the same thing. Homeboy walks off, then you see a rocket fly at her.

I've installed Max Payne time and again to play with the Matrix Mod.

This mod still around?

That's why we will most likely see a sequel. I believe AvP2 is still Monolith's best-selling game.

What were these short shooters you remember way back in the day?

Half-Life is the first one that jumps to mind. Doom wasn't that long, it was over 10 but not by much. Quake was also only slightly over 10. Dark Forces was probably 8 hours long, if even that. Those are the titles that I can immediately think of.

To be honest I didn't play too many pre-98 shooters, so I'm going to backpedal a bit here and say that pretty much since 2000, shooters have averaged around 10 hours.

Anyway the point still stands that 10 hour shooters arn't some dramatically new thing.

Yeah but also another thing to consider is 3rd party mods. I've installed Max Payne time and again to play with the Matrix Mod.

And you have over 2 grand into your system and FEAR doesn't look good? When did you buy your computer? 1989?

"Everyone bitches and moans about the game only being ten hours long but the reality is that that is the average length of shooters. Yeah, every now and then we get one that's longer or shorter (Doom 3 and Max Payne 2, respectively) but for the most part shooters tend to last 8-10 hours. This isn't a new thing either, yeah some older shooters were longer but even in the nineties the average length was still in that 8-10 hour range. "

What were these short shooters you remember way back in the day? I sure don't remember them. If shooters have always been that short then it wouldn't be such a surprise when they are short now. But I do remember the consternation when Max Payne turned out as short as it was. That seemed to be about when the "worm started to turn" so to speak.
