Sam & Max Rescued

Telltale Games secures rights to Sam & Max (thanks Mike Martinez) announces the welcome news for adventure game fans that Sam & Max are to hit the road once more, as the rights to create a new game based on the dog and rabbit heroes of the LucasArts classic are now in the hands of Telltale Games. Here's a bit explaining what's known so far:

The deal was inked only days ago, and few details are available as of now. Telltale stresses that the game will not be Sam & Max: Freelance Police, the LucasArts title whose highly-publicized 2004 cancellation was widely mourned by fans. New content will be developed, and the game will be implemented in an episodic format similar to that of Telltale's Bone games. Purcell, who works at Pixar, says he will be as involved with the Sam & Max project as he can be.

"If there's a better match, I don't know who it is… I trust them," Purcell said, when asked why he chose to work with Telltale. Purcell knows the Telltale team from their LucasArts days and is comfortable with their handling of the upcoming first Bone game, which is adapted from the well-known comic by Jeff Smith. When LucasArts' hold on the Sam & Max rights ran out this spring, Purcell and Telltale had the freedom to move forward.

I think it's safe to say with all the crap that's come from George and LucasArts we're all suffering "domestic abuse". ummm... blaaaaa..

Maybe Mr. Purcell doesn't know, but his coworker, Tim Schafer (creator of Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, and (half of) Day of the Tentacle) started a company called Double Fine (http://www.doublefine.com/). They recently released PSYCHONAUTS. Getting Telltale and Double Fine both working on this game almost be like the entire staff of ex-LucasArts employees. "I think these two fine companies would match perfectly on the next Sam & Max product." Kxmode said.

If Telltale Games doesn't...

1. Turn S&M into some weird 3D game
2. Changes the genre from adventure to <insert genre name here>. Sam & Max: The Coloring Book perhaps??
3. Has any desire to even make this game. The announcement was merely a marketing ploy to garner attention to their fledgling company.

Telltale is a new software company comprised almost entirely of former LucasArts employees. These guys worked on the Sam & Max sequel that was cancelled by LucasArts.

You can read more about them here: http://www.telltalegames.com/team and here: http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,427

"Did those two ever shag? Gabriel and Grace, not Sam and Max."

Yes, in GK4 they did shag. They used polygons instead of actors for that one, so it was kinda creepy.

No they didn't. GK3 (with the help of an online strategy guide of course) was one of my most enjoyable gming experiences to date. It was so interactive, so packed with information, so just fun !

I got Sam & Max: Hit The Road as a double back with Day Of The Tentacle (Maniac Mansion 2) about a year ago for a fiver. Never got round to playing it. I used to play level 9 adventures but this whole point and click malarkey can peeve me. I played Gabriel Knight 1 and 2 and it was fairly annoying. Did those two ever shag? Gabriel and Grace, not Sam and Max.

See the Bone update above this one.

Otherwise, just looks like a small/new/hatchling game developer:

I am not expecting a masterpiece, but I am a little bit more hopeful after playing the Bone non-demo.
At least they seem to have the heart for it.
Providing basic linkage,

I just hope/pray they get the same guys who did the Sam and Max's voices from Freelance Police.

Yeah, in the video I saw for the LA sequel, the voices didn't sound right...

What would be IMO interesting is 1 part GTA (big city with the Sam and Max Mobile) and 1 part Psychonauts. Shake until green bubble and oozy, and let Max pop the bubbles muhahahahaahaaaa.

That was the pack I was thinking about, didn't know they'd made it to run under modern systems. Hmmm, I might see if I can pick that up somewhere still

I never managed to get Grim Fandango to run on that one, though. Gave me (IIRC) a DirectX error; wanted 5 when I was on 6 or 7 or 8 or so.

Oh, and yay! First game was ace. I was gutted when the sequel was cancelled.

Here's hoping Telltale will be able to find an audience for the Bone games, and make enough money to make a great Sam & Max game.

I've been watching the Bone development, it looks interesting.

They released a version that runs under 2k/XP, but the only place I found it was in the UK...came w/ The Dig, Grim Fandango, and Full Throttle, all designed to run under current OSs...
