Space Captain knows what he's talking about. I've never even thought about boycotting a game because of its copy protection. I buy games, but I circumvent every copy protection scheme I encounter, just on principal. I'm not A#1 Pirate Captain, but I'll say "Arr" with the best of them to keep my computer under my control.
Anyway, this game. I'm sure nobody read my post in the demo thread, but for it's flaws, I liked this game. I certainly enjoyed it more than FEAR, but then the last Monolith game I liked was Blood 2. I don't think BoS will do great, but I do think the developers deserve some support: At least BoS isn't a WW2 tactical squad shooter.

Really? then how would you suggest that they try to keep the game from mass illegal distribution for the first few critical weeks in retail where 90% of their sales will come from?
There are still developers and publishers who publish games with no copy protection. There are also those who use "weaker" and less invasive protection schemes and then remove it a couple months later with a patch (which takes care of the "critical" first few weeks, which IMO you are placing too much importance in). That is the kind of behavior that I support with my money.
If you don't like it, don't buy it. If enough people stand up to this treatment they will realise they will lose more sales by including protection like StarForce in their games than through piracy by not doing so.

Plus lots of euro developers love starforce because the latest versions have not been cracked by anyone and released publicly. ROFL. That's a load of crap, if I ever heard one. EVERY pc game is cracked and released publically, starforce or no and it NEVER takes 2-3 weeks for someone to do so. The longest I've ever seen it take is 3 days for any copy protection scheme and that wasn't starforce. Starforce usually lasts about 6-8 hours.
The only thing starforce and all the other worthless copy protection schemes out there do is give the producers a false sense of security, but then, they're so oblivious to the reality of their own business that they don't even recognize how rediculous it all is.

I don't care if they have the best reason in the world. I absolutely refuse to support any developer or publisher that distrusts their customers so much that they will use such an invasive copy protection scheme. Really? then how would you suggest that they try to keep the game from mass illegal distribution for the first few critical weeks in retail where 90% of their sales will come from? They shouldn't treat people like criminals but how are they supposed to keep one at bay and the other doing business with? Third wave, the guys that did War World released their great little mech shooter demo with a time limit hoping people would be honest and not crack it but instead, buy it. What did these trusting self-funded developers get for their trouble? In less than 12 hours it was up on every Torrent site with a crack and trainer.
The thing with Starforce is it works, the newer builds are much more stable as well. No, it won't last forever, someone will eventually crack it but as I said, if they can keep the game from being pirated for the first 2-3 weeks then they may be able to at least break even. Until someone comes along with something more effective, thats the price we'll pay for others dishonesty.

Well some people throw a tizzy fit about copy protection being in a demo. I used to be one of those people until I was educated as to why that is so. So I was trying to educate you.
I understand fully why it comes with copy protection. I don't care if they have the best reason in the world. I absolutely refuse to support any developer or publisher that distrusts their customers so much that they will use such an invasive copy protection scheme.
Treat me like a criminal, and I won't support you. Treat me like a paying customer, and I will be a paying customer. It's that simple.

Heh. My first thought when reading the game's name was that it would make for a nice (dumb, actually) pun in German - Beton is German for concrete. Then I saw that the developers are German, and this might actually intended. On the other hand, B.O. Soldier is nice, too.

I understand why people don't want anything to do with starforce. But just so you know, the manufacturer of starforce provides a starforce removal utility because the developers of games uninstall utilities are configured to be so damn unthorough in their removal of things. Why is it so hard to keep track of every addition, subtraction, modification made by the installation and to revert those changes during uninstallation? Why is that so hard? Every damn game leaves registry keys everywhere.

I downloaded and installed BOS but while it was installing I read a message on here that talked about Starforce. So I did some investigating and after installing the game I never ran it, only unistalled it.
Starforce sounds like bad news and frankly I don't want to have to purge my system just to try a demo.
FYI, if you happen to install it, never run hte software, then uninstall it, there doesn't seem to be a trace of starforce on the system. I ran the remove starforce program and checked everything in detail with spybot, no trace so a litte relief there.

I don't know how many times thsi has to be said:
What makes you think it needed to be said here?
People are complaining about StarForce, not simply demos with it but everything with it. So yes, we all understand why the demos have StarForce when full versions also have it. We simply say we will not install anything, demo or full, with StarForce.
Christ, way to jump on an unnecessary high horse.

I don't know how many times thsi has to be said: the reason some game demos have starforce is because when the game comes out in retail it will have starforce too. Let me explain, the demos have to have starforce in because crackers use demos that are unprotected to crack retail software because the files that are in the demo either identical or virtually identical to the ones that will ship in retail. So if they don't put starforce in the demo, and put starforce in the retail, it will be cracked. That's the only reason why they do it.
Plus lots of euro developers love starforce because the latest versions have not been cracked by anyone and released publicly.
But anyway, I played the SP game and it's pretty lame and dated in almost everyway.
I don't care about this game. And I think I'm not alone. This comment was edited on Sep 9, 12:06. |
