from http://aoe3.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=ct&f=11,23685,0,10
I was fiddling around last night to fix AA issues I was having and noticed Black textures over flags and stuff, and at a certain stage of some building constructions... I dunno if its related but try and set the Shader (not Shadow) Quality down to High or lower. That fixed it, it seems to be a bug in the demo. I don't know if this'll fix it for you, it did for me and my blackness issues, just until 'they' sort it out. (if this don't work its all I got, sorry hehe)

I don't know why the hell I posted this, I'm not even going to play the game but I just like to help out I guess Heh, well I hope the Win2k people see this. I think most of them already deleted the demo and won't be looking back here though. Many probably wouldn't want to try it anyways just because MS restricted it to WinXP users. Although, beating MS by getting it to run on 2000 would be a plus.

Getting it work on Win2000 and solving.. |

Here's a workaround to getting it to work on windows 2000 and a little solution for the people having trouble with random reboots... (these are NOT my solution! NOT! I got it from other forums!!!)
1. Start aoe3trail.exe
2. It creates a new Folder at
"C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\<aktueller Benutzer>\Lokale Einstellungen\temp" (Don't know what this is with an english Win2k...Maybe C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\temp)
3. Wait for the error message
4. Copy the "Age of Empires III Trail.msi" from the mentioned Temp folder to C:\
5. Rename the file to ao3.msi
6. Go to the command console (START>RUN>cmd) and type:
Quote:
msiexec /a C:\ao3.msi /qn TARGETDIR="C:\blah"
Wait a few moments.
7. Start C:\blah\Age of Empires III\age3.exe
source: http://aoe3.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=st&fn=1&tn=23485&f=1,,0,10&st=50
Another way (you need a pc with winxp that you can access (maybe over a network) The demo _DOES_ run under Windows 2000. I just installed it on my WinXP laptop and copied the folder "...\Age Of Empires III Trial" over to my Windows 2000 workstation. Executed age3.exe and BINGO! It came up without a problem.
And for the people experiencing random reboots:
to the rebooters: just delete in config.xml all the lines in which your video card is named... god bless my spare time:)
I don't know why the hell I posted this, I'm not even going to play the game but I just like to help out I guess Or maybe it's because I'm in a good mood because I'm going out on a date tonight! |

Its definetly the lighting that seems to be lacking. Look at some of the screenshots, with light glinting off armor and the like. Totally non-existant in the game.

Thought the game was all right. Not sure if I like the card feature, it did safe my ass versus the AI a couple of times. The easy AI is really easy, the moderate AI is more challenging, the hard one would certainly kick my ass. I suck at RTS, though.
You can see your population number and limit by activating one of the GUI options in the settings... I think it's the one that also tells you how many of your villagers are gathering which resource.
Graphics are good, but I totally agree that the interface is way too large.

Do the survey and tell MS what yuou think of the game. I did the survey but I wish it had more questions actually regarding the game rather than just if I liked the demo or not. Or give us a suggestion box to add our opinions. It could be a lot better if they listed to what we wanted.

I WAS telling it to install to d:, and thats where the game is currently sitting right now, but i still needed to free up over 500mb of space on c: in order to get it to install. The fact the installer was insisting on using the c: drive for temporary files was the problem. Yeah, same thing here. I had to free almost 1Gb before it would install to my E: drive. I wonder how much free space the full game will need on the C: drive. Hmm, maybe it won't need temp files installing from a CD. I don't know how that works..

The gameplay is good, I was just disappointed by the graphics/engine (one of the main features). This game was meant to bring FPS graphics improvements to the table and was hyped up to be the "Half-Life 2 of RTS games", and as that it has failed.
The interface is just so amateur... you should be able to choose it's size/scale - as it is it will just take up half the screen and it feels like you're looking through a letterbox. I also get sound popping (I've heard a lot of people with this issue) and got my first crash-to-desktop (for no apparent reason).
I did expect it to look better. If they make it so that the interface size can be adjusted and make the movement around the screen less twitchy then I'll strongly consider this game. I really do wish you could zoom out further, though... one of the advantages of running at a high resolution should be that you can fit more on the screen (at least for singleplayer! - I can imagine for multiplayer this would disadvantage many players with smaller screens).
I was expecting a lot more from this... sure, it's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but there are so many niggly issues and stupid oversights. This is what I'd have expected 2-3yrs ago - as it is it just falls flat.

| The games allright I guess, graphics are a bit of a let down though, even at the highest settings the game looks nowhere near as good as the released screenshots (the lighting just isnt as good). The building destruction sequences are cool, as well as the animations, and I think the amount of detail on units is acceptable. Really wish you can shrink the UI and zoom out further... And for those who though the demo was too hard, I found the opposite and I really dont play too many RTS games... |

At least let us install it and try on our own risk. But it's not like the game won't run on 2k, they just don't want it to run on 2k... Well I ain't gonna update my OS to the crap XP is just for a demo, that's for sure...
btw, there was another game by M$ I think which also insisted on using C: to store temporary installation files... If you're using a small partition to launch different systems from you were SOL, woot

Where's the survey question "So, you couldn't install the demo because you still have Win2k and haven't become our bitch by purchasing every tiny, incremental, 100 dollar upgrade we keep shoving down your throat, what would you like to do to Bill Gates?"
A: Sodomize him with a cactus B: Slowly tear the flesh off his face with a cheese grater C: Douse him in acid D: All of the above

Do the survey and tell MS what yuou think of the game. I gave it bad ratings. I was expecting more. Playing it bored me.
I kept losing my sounds on my Audigy 2 ZS sound card!! I never had that problem before. Also is it me or do the gameplay cutscenes where they talk go fast?
